Hello all, I have been searching the web trying to find advice on traveling to the Britian,Uk/or certain parts of England like London, Bristol or anywhere interesting basically to explore. I would luv to know England from a Black perspective. So I was hoping could anyone share any advice, tips, or expectations that a Black Americans should consider when traveling to this country? How much of a culture shock we could be in for? Also please recommend some good Black Historical places we should visit to learn more about the Black History in Britian thats very essential, and great places to eat as well, Im really look forward to your replys....

To be honest Laila U'm not sure of any black museums etc but I'm so out of touch these days I wouldn't know even if one opened up nect door to me
A an American, you would like London, people are a bit short with people, screwfaces eerywhere, bad vibes and noisy kids occupy eevry bus. Other than that its fine

And when you;ve done London come to the land of sea and aggressive seagulls. Not many Black people (but that;s changing fast!) You can get windswept, sand blown and meet a host of the most eccentric people you;ve ever known. Its a fact, all the crazies lie low in seaside towns. No museums, one cinema, no decent clubs, but lots of icecream and sticks of rock. Lots of old historical Tudor buildings. Lots of interesting olde worlde pubs, where you can meet real village idiots. Lots of strange old men chewing grass and saying "Get off my land". Yeah, you;ll have a Ball!

it's still funny!!! that's so crazy!!!! in Germany I was in the city and using the phone booth. this old man came knocking on the phone booth and saying something in German (did'nt sound nice either). I was like, what's his problem because I had just stepped in to the phone booth. what's up with that!! usually they say that when people get old they become nicer /friendlier(trying to get into heaven or something), lol, maybe old people in Europe just get meaner and crazier...................

Definitely go to the slavery musuem in liverpool! i went there last yr with my mother and that place is just breath taking and informative. I recommend it!

I dont believe people get nicer with age. I think miserable young people become even more miserable old people, cos they just got more to moan about with age. Like creaking joints, and haemorrhoids, and stair lifts,.and prostrate trouble, and no-one Ever fancying em ever again! Ever. Wouldn;t you be miserable?

Check out the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton southwest London. Also, the Africa Centre in Covent Garden central London. The Black British weekly newspapers The Voice and New Nation are also good sources of information on places to vist, events etc.

If you come to London just check out all the museums thats one of the best things about London many of them are free.
But if you walk through the west end please make sure you read your map properly before you set out because if you are one of those tourist that slow me down because you don't know where your going you'll be on that next plane back to America. Also word of advice for you if you come over do not eat from the street vendors if you do your return home in a casket. Try and come over when its much warmer to experience pure craziness. You have to check out the local markets as well to get a real feel of the place.

You're getting some good responses at the moment. If you do come during the summer, particularly July/August you could take in the various carnivals in Notting Hill in London, and Birmingham have a good one as well. You will find black people in the North of England much friendlier than in London, I'll probably get shot for saying this but in my experience, I've found this to be true.

You will find black people in the North of England much friendlier than in London, I'll probably get shot for saying this but in my experience, I've found this to be true.

You say that almost as if you no longer sample the delights of our beautiful city after dark!!! Which would be a shame!!
In response to your suggestion, it depends what sort of things our beauteous visitor-to-be would like to do. There is undoubtedly the Jazz Café (when someone good's playing!), various winebars and clubs (being a final year student, I have neither the time nor the money to enable me to frequent such establishments!!)
However, I will say, Lalia, that if anyone EVER recommends Destiny's Nightclub (in Watford) to you, hit them...

Mediterranean island where anyone who's anyone goes in the summer to party. It's like the black man's summer hideaway!! If you like music, sun, alcohol, sea, sex (obviously) then you have to go.

Well, in London, a large area of South London is predominantly black, a lot of East London (eg. Leyton, Walthamstow, Plaistow) is black, then you've got the North and North West London (areas like Harrow, Kilburn etc...) Ummm, I'm sure I've left some places out, but I'm sure someone will come along and chip in.
Out of London, not to sure. I know Luton, which is an hour or so north of London, is pretty black. As is Milton Keynes (though not so much) I'm sure places like Birmingham and Manchester have a lot of our peers! It's not a questions I've often pondered.
When you coming over, out of curiousity? And what prompted your trip?
