That's not an inclusive list.

You left off ordinary folks who are influencing lives without the glamour, the money and the spotlight....parents, teachers, nurses, etc....niceone.gif

You are right.  I could only have 10 poll questions.

They can post who their favorite role models are if not on poll.

Who is yours?:)

My mother....

She is to me, all those things I previously mentioned....parent, teacher and nurturer.

She has influenced me in ways she will never begin to understand and it is through her being and her deeds, that I understand that it doesn't take fame and wealth to shape or influence a life...whether it's a life you brought into this world or not.

It takes a village has a lot of meaning. I have a lot of role models from wince I came each bestowing me with vital knowledge about life and the journey.

Something that I noticed they would not waste their breath on certain children that did not show promise or expectation of success in their endeavours.

Yep I would say my mum too without a shadow of a doubt.  I wouldn't even have to think about that question

calling eminem racist after some inconspicous tape and pitting him in the same sentance as hitler, is a bit ridicolous

I dont have any role models. My upbringing was very mechanical, food on table, clothes on back, books for sschool, money for clothes. Was taught few real lesons, apart from work harder then the whiteys( every1 told that)

However, I do plan on redressing the balance when I have my child. Make sure I parent rather then breed.

By the way that list is  a complete joke

@Sconiers...Absolutely correct people who are serious, especially young people who show the apptitude to learn invariably will take the eye of others, usually elders, who will take them under their wing or pass on invaluable things.

But I have a very large number of role models, starting from obvious to many and predominantly ordinary people who are extraordinary in particular things, apart from other high profiled people. But role models to do not have to be the complete item so to speak, as you can take from them up to a point. I think of Dr Bernard Coard who was a hero of mine, until his messed up at a crucial stage in the Grenadian revolution. And there are others who you may well surpass but none the less vital in that journey.

Depending on what you are doing at a particular point will bring you into new role models. Sometimes people can become role model accidentally. We have a sister from my community, who also comes from my village in the Caribbean. She was the first person of our age quite young to build her house back home and she did it some time ago.

A very ordinary sister, working two jobs etc. But the impact of her actions were massive and one of leadership without knowing it for the younger members of our community.

A person can be a role model after one action or incident because people are often unaware how their actions impact on others in key situations. I remember in the 76 war at NottingHill Carnival. The police were boxed in with black men in their thousands reigning down fire or anything we could get our hands on with one thing in mind. So they begun to drive at the crowds in vans at full speed with the crowd parting lke a bull fight where the bull escapes and goes for the crowd.

As a police van was comng towards us at about 90 mph. This rasta elder brother literally at the last and I mean last second stepped right in front of the vehicle and stood his ground. I put my hands over my face, because I thought his brains and insides were coming our way. Just like a deadly game of chicken and at the last second when the police driver realised that my boy was not joking slammed on the brakes, which were screaming for their life. The van jacked and spun over and my boy was still standing there like a movie without even blinking.

The people went crazy and as for those cops in the van well people ran to their "assistance". Even today brothers talk about that individual. We don't know who he is, or what area he was from. Is he alive or dead. Nothing. But almost thirty years later people talk about that one act of pure and absolute courage and the effect it had.

Yep Codebreaker has mentioned just one name that makes this village shake. What a man. John Henrik-Clarke his life stroy is a movie with several sequals.

Role Models

Sometimes I'm a little confused as to what people mean when they talk about role models.

Do we mean some one we would want to be like?

or

Some one whose influence has led us to become the people we are?

Some would say that these are interchangeable notions, and that's true but for me I dinstinguish between the two.

My parents influenced me - but I want to be different to them. I respect the people  they are and their values - even their love of all things English, but as a grown man I have my own vision.

So for me - respect and love for my parents is entirely different to wanting to be like them.

There are a range of people who I'd like to emulate. They're not all heroic in the traditional sense.

I'd like to be as intelligently funny as Rory Bremner, I'd like to be as on top of my game as Tony Blair, I'd like to improve my sprint speed, inspired by Asafa Powell, I'd like to be more charming like, and exude more masculine power like Sidney Poitier in the film In Heat of the Night.

I'd like to be a powerful father like Richard Williams [Serena and Venus] I'd like to be a devoted husband like Paul Newman (married to wife for over thirty years) I'd actually like to be a great Scholar ;-) LOL! like Naom Chompsky and a great orator like Tony Benn and our father Dr Martin Luther King.

I would like to be a magnificent gladiator like Mike Tyson - and a Fiery revolutionary like Malcolm X.

I seek to model myself on two men who mean - most to me of all men.

The Implacable African Warrior - Boukman of San Dominque

and

The Father of Black Nationalism

The Honourable Marcus Garvey jamflag
