Hi,
My name is Esoe, a final year architecture student studying in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and I am working on a Black History Museum for my final dissertation. I would be grateful to know what your opinions are on such a project like where would be an ideal site in London for the situation of the building and functions / areas that you think are appropriate.
The reason for chosing this as my topic for my dissertation is to raise awareness of the history of blacks in the U.K.
Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.:)

Somewhere in Brixton would be a good location.

Nooooooo:shock:....... somewhere in Birmingham, (more central).

We need another 'black' thing in London, like a hole in the head!

There is a slavery museum in Liverpool at the albert docks. you may be able to gather some info there. liverpool for a slavery museum was chosen based on the fact that Liverpool and Bristol formed the basis of slave trade in England. so i would say it deoends on what you want to portray. London only became significant during the windrush years. even then black people were not and are not still confined to London. I would reccomend somewhere in the midlands. which is more central. London people will just have to travel like the rest of us do. I would say Nottingham is a good location.

One of the things about African history is that most of the museums and universities have a wealth of information which is hidden from the general public in particular those of African descent

I am in favour of several museums focusing on different aspects of our history and more importantly the museums that already exist reflecting and showing the correct history of Africans.

I would like to find out more about the history of Africans in the Bay area of Cardiff many of whom descend from West African sailors (Sierra Leone in particular) so I might suggest this as a location. There again somewhere like Manchester because of it's links with the Pan-African movement in the 40's

I think the biggest challenge for us is locating and promoting historical information about us that already exists

I was looking at the idea of a museum that celebrates our history and our achievements through out the centuries in various aspects of life which would show that there are things we can be proud of.

I am also exited about this project because there will be people from the construction industry at the final end of year show and that could be promising as some one can pick it up for development.

Also can anyone recomend any website were i can find a comprehensive history of blacks in britain. thanks
