BREAKING NEWS
NBC, MSNBC and news services
Updated: 8:11 a.m. ET Jan. 31, 2006
ATLANTA - Coretta Scott King, who turned a life shattered by her husband's assassination into one devoted to enshrining his legacy of human rights and equality, has died, former mayor Andrew Young told NBC Tuesday morning. She was 78.
Young, who was a former civil rights activist and was close to the King family, broke the news during a phone call he made to the NBC "Today" show.
Asked how he found out about her death, Young said, "I understand she was asleep last night and her daughter tried to wake her up."
King had been recovering at home since suffering a stroke and heart attack in August.
She was last seen in public when she made a surprise appearance at a fundraiser on what would have been her husband's 77th birthday earlier this month.
She smiled from her wheelchair as she was greeted with a standing ovation and thunderous applause from a crowd of 15-hundred at the Salute to Greatness Dinner at the King Center.
Coretta King was a supportive lieutenant to her husband during the most tumultuous days of the American civil rights movement.
The Kings were married in 1953 and had four children, Martin Luther III, Yolanda, Dexter and Bernice. After her husband’s assassination in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968, King kept his dream alive by starting the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, based in Atlanta.

A woman of incredible courage......she launched the drive to make King's birthday a national holiday...not too long after he was killed.....
RIP to a woman who had to deal with a LOT of threats and despair but never stopped fighting.

L.Stirrer,
I may have had my differences about ( and her kids), but I respect her as a pioneer and a great woman.. If there is anything good that I will say about her is that she got the King holiday past. Truthfully, her husband didn't want a celebrationof himself( That is what Dr.King told my mom), but she did something that was incredulous and alsohow his B-Day triiggered the real racial attitudes about our country.
I also wonder. Notl ong ago , her children was fighting over the King Center. Two of the kids want the government to run it, while the other half didn't I wonder was that getting on her nerves? I hope that it didn't cause her death? Anyways my condolences to her family.,

| Rest in peace to Coretta Scott King. I was shocked when I read it on another messageboard, I was flipping through the channels before and saw her but I assumed she was in the news for something else.

L.Stirrer,
I didn't know them on a social level , like how you may talk with your family or friends, but I have came across them a few times, the mother more so than the kids. The " differences" that I had with Mrs. King is what you can say is indirectly personal. Honestly, the family wasn't the most open or friendliest of people. I remembered when I was in the seventh grade, when we was at the King center. How all the little kids was speaking to her and how she looked at those kids for two minutes. She didn't speak, but Vanessa Williams--the light skinned one, was with her all the kids did the same thing and she was just as friendly. On another occasion, I went with a friend to a local beauty shop. It was Mrs. Kings and her daughters. They came in, again they didn't speak to you and they were somewhat snappy to people if they weren't waited on hand and foot!
Initally, I thought that with Mrs. King being and older woman , didn't hear us. Then I had friends saying the same thing about them. Then my mom explained it. She used to live one or two doors down from them. She said Martin was a very friendly guy, who had time for people. Even those days,my mom said that she (Coretta)didn't speak to you unless she knew you were famous or had some sort of high position and degree. You could passby her on the street and she would look at you like you was nothing. Martin used to have conversations with my mom and some other people on the street. He told my mom two things that would had me thinking about the Black man's life: 1) He told her that he hoped that what he and the other freedom fighters fought for wouldn't be in vain 2) He didn't want any celebrations about himself. He just wanted to be there for the people.
The reason why I had differences with all of them because the portrayed themselves to be something they really weren't. You never seen them in a the soup lines helping the poor or anything like that. They weren't really people oriented. Now, like I said the whole family is fighting for the rights of maintaining the King Center. I cannot speak for all of the people of Atlanta, but there are people who are pretty disgusted with them --for many years--a lot of them being Black because they just felt that they living off their fathers name in a not so good way. Either way, she is and icon for our city and in the world. I will admit, it's going to be a little weird not seeing her being at the annual MLK commencement ceremonies. She wasn't able to make this years event.

| Well coon tv........*clears throat*..........I mean BET should be ashamed of themselves. They only showed a little tidbit of this news and went back to their daily dose of booty and bling bling videos. I wish they would take that garbage off t.v. already.
