Following the lead of many people on here, i thought a thread where we can all post the addresses of the black-owned hair (and food shops) could be listed, for us all, regardless of the part of the country we live in. I am new here, so i hope this has not been done before. If it has, i am sorry, and am sure the moderators will merge this with the previous thread.

We support their mortgages, their childrens education sometimes inadvertently more than we do our own, as well as any other thing they decide to spend the money they earn from us on. This post is not soley a response to the latest events in Birmingham, but a clear oppotrunity for us to not give them so much of our money, for so little in return. If you check the national statistics via the speadsheets on ethnic make-up of the UK, there are more than enough of us, especially in the cities, to make a serious impact; especially if we encourage others to do the same.

As I am familiar with South London, I'll start there:

Elephant And Castle:

-A woman has a permenant hair stall inside the shopping centre, on the ground floor

Deptford/New Cross:

-There is a small store that used to be called Sophie's, that is on Deptford High Street, opposite Iceland, where they are very polite.

-African Food Shops are at both ends of Deptford High Street, on both sides of the road. But, there is one on the Albany side, near the Anchor.

-On New Cross Road, there is one hair shop, on the opposite side of the road from Addey and Stanhope School, opposite the record shop (used to be called Lees, now Red Records-i think)

-Lizaios- this is an African food shop, that sells hair products also, on New Cross Road, next to New Cross Library.

-On market days, a black man has a food stall in deptford market, on douglas way

Peckham:

- There is a small hair shop on the left hand side of Peckham Rye, at the library end, not far from the new Subway

-An African food shop is in the Peckham Rye indoor market, at the station end

Lewisham:

-There is an African-owned hair shop inside the model market (a.k.a.the 'black' market), the first corner if coming from the lewisham high st side

-An African-Caribbean couple run a market stall, normally opposite the Lloyds TSB, selling food stuffs.

In Aldershot:

-There is a food shop, owned by a Jamaican man, a 5 mins walk from the station on Station Road.

Please feel free to add more!

For those who feel that this may be anti-Asian, it may be, but its more pro-us

To be honest

All your good intentions will go down the toilet

But do you know why?

Because this thread ask people to take responsiblity for their own destiny. Look at how many hits this gets verse Asians rape African girl. U see we like to shout and boycot and march and complain. But dont ask us to put our money together and start a big hair shop chain, our a massive barber shop.

No it feels better giving money to Indians while being jealous at the 1 sister who is trying to do for self.

Simple supporting each other (wheres the blood in that?)

people have tried for years. and these dark skin people have no plan in self-salvation

Better idea lets wait for the white man to "come and get us to hell out of this mess"

I dont think this posters good intentions will go down the toilet ,but from what ive heard a thead like this already exists, we need DM the thread archivist to dig it up as the search button appears to be just for decoration.

If a new thread is started I would like to suggest to admin that the thread become a sticky in one of the forums or that it gets a seperate forum of its own so that we may refer to it from time to time and who knows in the long term if these African/Black Vendors know that they are getting free publicity on this site they may eventually buy some advertising or contribute in some way.

But I would suggest that the African vendor forum would have to up and active for at least 6  months before you can expect that.

Ocacia, i don't think so either. It is a really simple thing to do, that can have real economic benefits...for African businesses, and oursevles (when we drive the price down), as well as the psychological and social benefits of putting a dent in feeling continually abused, or just plain disrespected, and increased PRIDE. I am not talking about a boycott, just not shopping with them unnecessarily. For alot of people it will not be hard.

I know people who drive into london to buy their African produce on a weekly/fortnightly basis. I've supported African businesses when buying african/african orientated goods for a few years now, while living in and outside of london. At first it was difficult to walk that extra 5-10 minutes, or waiting a few days for an additional reason to go to a particular part of town to make it worth the journey, but it got easier in no time at all.

Now is as good a time as any, maybe even better.

You might be right, you might not. I think we are better than how you portray us, and I look forward to you being proved wrong. This is too easy to do to ignore.

...I could have given it a more interesting title though... blkrainbowfro

Don't know if it exists already..but there seems to be a market for a Black owned directory ..in UK...either hardcopy or one in cyberspace...

I will not stereotype east indians in UK...but as I said before...issues of immigrant groups opening shop and pattern of disrespect for Black money is worldwiide... immigrants from the merchant class from india region, china, arab world and jews.....seem to follow pattern of traveling to white and Black countries...opening shop....in black areas....

I don't knock them for making money....and I've said before..if individually or collectively....merchants of a certain background are disrespecting memebers of a certain race......the peole who continue to support the individual merchants...are FOOLS.... straight up....

People don't respect fools.....if it bothered people that much..they would no longer support person(s) who does it...

THE COMMUNITY NEEDS TO SUPPORT OUR BUSINESSES AS THEY ARE OURS, BUT WE ARE IN A NEW AGE NOW, AND AGE WHERE ITS NOT ONLY ABOUT THE COMMUNITY SUPPORTING BLACK BUSINESSES, ITS ABOUT THE BLACK BUSINESS SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH MASS ORGANISATIONS. BCUS WE HAVE ALL SEEN WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY HOUSE NEGROES GET RICH AND START SLANDERING THE COMMUNITY BY SAYING 'THEY R RICH BCUS THEY ARE DETERMINED AND RAISED WELL, NOT GIVING ANYTHING BACK BUT TURNING THEIR BACKS AND SAYING THE ROUTE OF OUR PROBLEM IS PARENTING.

So make the effort to support these businesses, but also challenge them to support you and tell them how!!!

UHURU means FREEDOM!!

GOOD NOW WE ALL AGREE

What next

How do we get all of us on the same page

Because we might share teh same skin color but we dont share the same soul

I will not support any business selling our people drugs (yes alcohol and those death sticks) so u see we might share the same color but we dont share the same soul. And you know skin lightening cream and revlon are in the bin

So whats left?

I need to be a little negative to throw the reality towel into the ring

Because whats the point of stopping teh Indians posioning us and posioning ourselves'????

This is why I like teh film 500 YEARS LATER because in it lay a plan. And Maulana Karenga said "the problem is the culture crisis in our lives"

Africancode.org was set up for unity among our diverse business.

Now Today I ask one thing who wants to be part of this template and be accountable for what they say they will do. Because as sharpton rightly said,

"IF YAH SCARED SAY SO" better that than waste our God damm time

SO PEOPLE ARE YOU REALLY READY FOR ACTION UPON A TEMPLATE OF UNITY?

http://www.africancode.org has just begun in a few weeks it will be operational as a starting page to unity for everything you said above. Will you support? our will you find fault? SUPPORT TEH FILM http://WWW.500YEARSLATER.COM how many have you purchased it? So start there by supporting that if you are honest about African business--- but you wouldnt cuz that means you have to be serious

TRUST ME: WE ARE HERE BECAUSE OF THAT UGLY THING WE SEE IN THE MIRROR

Whilst I agree in some respects with Ocacia, I believe that a little can make a big difference.

Yes, Black people can come across as "red eye", but that doesn't mean that we, the people on here that know what time it is, can't set about convincing our fellow Blacks to buy from our own.

We need more shops, selling everything- not just concentrating on takeaways and hair.

I'm sure others, like me, have business ideas that they want to put into practice. We need to get off our backsides and do it.

When you look at it, the hair and takeaway shops are now a saturated market. We need to diversify into other things, and make sure others know about it.

On another note, there is a directory called Black Links that lists Black owned businesses. However, it is notoriously difficult to get hold of. Why is that, when we get Thomson and Yellow Pages delivered direct to our door each year????

LadyVee,  Blacklinks is not very intuitive and could perhaps use a bit of overhaul (appreciating the fact that it is dependent on sponsors and participation of vendors)

Not only do black businesses need support on individual level but we need to watch the business planning of other ethnicities...  Koreans, Chinese and Indians in the US have their own LOAN ASSOCIATIONS and mechanisms for deploying business collectively.  Anyone with a sound business plan and capital can become members of these organisations and  set up quite successful chains of retail stores and services.   How else can they maintain chains of grocery stores, nail salons, etc?

In the meantime, we should set up a separate thread for brainstorming and invite every African entrepreneur (no matter how small the venture) and Financial Advisors to come in, pitch ideas and spread the word.

Bump

I am going to email every one i know to try and get me addresses of their local African/Black owned stores...

Maybe we can put up an easily searchable directory (not like the search function on BN ) for black businesses here on BN and ligali.  We can code it in area and focus of business i.e. hair and beauty, fruit and veg, butchers etc.  We can also maybe have a rating system for customer service or lack there of? We can even name it black pages lol.

@ALL

Could everyone please post the addresses of all the black owned businesses in you area.  If we do it area by area it could make this easier and quicker.

I am prepared to work on creating this directory and even print out the list and hand them out in black neighbourhoods... So come on people time to put words in to action.

I was in my local library the other day and I came across a Black Businesses Directory. It had names addresses etc of a whole load of black businesses all over the UK from food shops, to printing shops (However it did look a little bit suspect). I asked the libraraian where did they gwet this from, and the showed me the page in ther directory which had the conbtact information of the people who made the directory. Its done by some company called UKBL I tried to ring them to enquire about getting a copy but the number given was not recognised. Next week im going to go to the address of the company

thanks for replying.....I wasn't trying to be argumentative just clarifying my points..

The indian and korean people who set up shops are either from ...or have connections to...the merchant class of people from where they are from......

they have connections to suppliers and distribution networks that others(non indians/non asians) may not have....

I agree with you about the markup on items....that's fairly accurate....

but these store owners have connections that allow them to get lower price on items..and they are family owned stores so there is little or no payroll.....family works the store

lower price merchandise, no payroll, high markup of goods..... is what allows immigrantr family owned stores to survive and make money....

the merchant class of indians, jews, chinese, arabs, & koreans have access to networks of suppliers

the ones who are crooks and disrespect people are smart enough to know that 80% of those who are offended will come RIGHT back in store the next day and spend money...same thing happens over here.....and will continue to happen.....

self respect should dictate that you don't spend money where you are not respected like any other customer....

you right, black people are not innocent by no means...i blame our people for some of the things we can prevent..the things we can be in control of....

sometimes i sound like i am spewing hatred..but in reality i just expect alot more from people...not just black people...ALL people....im tired of the hypocrisy..of all races "holding hands" we know when to come together when it is convenient. Indian people have been at the hands of the british..for how many centuries? im not saying the oppressors always dictate the livelyhood of any group of people..im just saying...when u see the hypocrisy...do something about it.
im just predicting the future...history always repeats itself and black people never learn...as soon as we start "rising up" following the beat of our own drum...people will begin to show respect once again..why? because we will demand it

then what happens? a little "brotherly" love from our yellow, red and brown brothers and all of a sudden we are all "NI**ERS" again....
