Here is some news out of Richmond, Virginia on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University!

Have you seen the display that is now up and has been up since yesterday in Schafer Court? A group called PETA is protesting meat consumption and animal slaughter. Their method of conveying this message is by comparing slaughtered animals to slaughtered Black Slaves and Native Americans. They have even gone as far as displaying enlarged images of lynchings of blacks beside images of hanging cows, the hold of a slave ship, natives along the "Trail of Tears, and (MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!!!) the leg of a shackled slave beside a shackled cow leg! Does anyone but me and Kariss see a problem with this? How has VCU allowed this to happen? How has the Black and Native Students allowed this to continue? Any Professors out there see a problem? Please stop by and enlighten yourselves. Then let me know how we can collectively ensure this never happens again!

The Peta org will be on campus one more day (Thurs. Sept 22)! Come out and let them know that they are WRONG!!! Also, let them know what they are representing through images that already have their own stereotypes is EXTREMELY wrong! Why is it every time African-American-Caribbean culture is illuminated by people who do not share the "experience," African descents are shown as being in a primitive state or solely descendants of slaves? Collectively, WE have a rich and thriving culture. Therefore, we need to approach and challenge individuals/organizations who, consciously or unconsciously, degrade our image and achievements!

I went and talked to PETA for a good hour, and got other people talking as well. They had a picture of a cow in a slaughter house next to a lynching of black people, as if the two situations are equal! I was very offended, and I tried to make it clear to them that the way they were presenting their message was alienating people instead of drawing them in. If you look in the media this kind of thing happens a lot, where more emphasis is placed on a dog stuck in a well, than a person of color killed. There is a long legacy of issues dealing with race being marginalized while being exploited for the selfish promotion of other people's or in this case ANIMAL issues. I had to walk away after an hour, because I was starting to feel like punching something. I think that animals are mistreated, but animal rights should not be equated with human rights. If we are going to treat animals like humans, than we need to start prosecuting animals for breaking human laws, which would just be ridiculous. Also I want to say that while I have nothing against vegans, being a vegetarian is a dietary choice, and should not be equated with being down with a political cause. Be healthy, but you have your own choice, make up your mind on what's healthy for you.

Rene, and she assured me that she was notifying her friend @ channel 12 news as well as the Minister of the Nation of Islam. I now intend to e-mail all of our postings regarding this issue to blackamericaweb.com. Please flood the phone lines of the Black/Urban Radio Stations. Please flood the phone lines of the local news stations. Let them know that Students of color @ VCU will not stand for this BLASTED GARBAGE!
THIS IS TRULY DISGUSTING! VCU IS A MULTICULTURAL UNIVERSITY. HOWEVER, AFTER TODAY'S EVENTS IT SEEMS EVIDENT THAT THE HISTORY OF OUR CULTURE IS THE EQUIVALENT TO ANIMAL SLAUGHTER!

The PETA exhibit got a lot of coverage in the Hampton Roads area (PETA's International Headquarters are in downtown Norfolk). Hampton Roads NAACP members raised hell about it and PETA claimed they were going to suspend the exhibit.
Don't bother sending PETA an email about the exhibit, because when I did, all I got was some half-assed automated e-mail reply. Those nutballs can get away with stuff like that racist exhibit at VCU because there are enough misguided dogooder white liberals on campus who'd fall for that save the animals sh!t. You think PETA could get away with that exhibit a few blocks over in Jackson Ward. Hell no.

This is the patronising email i received from PETA when i emailed them to complain about the exhibition.

Thank you for offering your thoughts on our “Animal Liberation� display. We appreciate the opportunity to discuss the display and why it’s so important.
First, the intention of the display is to decrease the amount of cruelty in the world—to open hearts and minds. It points to the terrible level of suffering that has been inflicted on various groups and individuals throughout our history and points out some of the cruelty that still goes on in society today. It draws upon Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.� In other words, all oppression, disrespect, violence, and cruelty must be rejected—and prejudiced behavior should not be tolerated.
While the majority of people who have personally viewed the display have been very moved by it, we know that some people feel uncomfortable with it. We respectfully point out to them that the excuses that were given for the enslavement of Africans, the genocide of Native Americans, the treatment of women as their husbands’ property, the use of impoverished immigrants for practice surgeries, and the abuse of children in the labor force are the same excuses that are used to justify the exploitation of animals for human pleasure or convenience. Whips, chains, bullhooks, cages, and shock prods have no place in the present, just as they had no place in the past.

| I am not surprised. A few years ago PETA got in trouble for doing a similar display with images from the Holocaust. It looks like they haven't learned their lesson Damned fools.

They use these tatics precisely because they know it will bring attention to their cause,they are not stupid,they dont care about the insensitivity or the disrespect because their aims are clear.People who have never even heard about PETA now know who they are because of these tactics,so for them its a win/win situation.
Once they have exhausted the whole slavery analogy they will move on to the next shock tactic.
