why do yo'll do this? are you trying to show off?
i dnt understand this new trend... always on the train, tram or bus, always loud and inappropriate, always black kids!!!! and they always act defensive if asked to turn it off. Just makes black kids look typically ignorant!

| This trend also gets on my nerves, im not too sure if many people feel the same way tho. I dont know why they do it. I give them credit by thinking they're not doing it for attention/showing off becuase that would be pathetic to say the least. So why?? Wots worse is when the sound quality is just awful. One time when some youths were playing music on the bus i decided to turn up my Mp3 as well just to interferre with their loud music and maybe get on their nerves too. Most definitely, it is not just a 'black thing'. But you know how it goes? Blacks tend to notice a thing more when another black is involved, which can sometimes give the impression that it's a 'black thing'. It's called being 'self-conscious.
Yeah I have had my ears assaulted by all types that are into this 'sharing of their musical taste with the world' thing. It wouldn't be so bad if the sound quality was good, but it's just so grinding on the ears. Why do people do it?  Don't know, but I know where I would like to stick their 'musical' device.

I think it is an act of aggression personally. Almost dearing you to tell them to turn it off. They are aware of there surroundings as well. i.e If a bus was full of Peckham Boys then non-Peckham boys would not have the urge to play the music loud, if at all
I would say that in my expereince 9/10 the perpetartors are black but I will concur with Kunjufu that it is a youth problem cos I post in forums where they complain about the trend in Newcastle, etc

Let them be I say, let them have 'fun'! Why are we so down on youth and the innocent things kids do? it could be much worse.
And that Ken Livingston has got it in for them as well, apparently, he will confiscate their free oyster travel if anyone is caught doing this Funny, I was on a Brixton bus and a mid 30somthing white man came bopping downstairs blearing his chart music, I then though would Ken have taken this stance if these kids where playing music more palatable to most travellers (I.e) Beatles, Queens anthem... Or for our musical genre - lovers rock, soul... Man can we be selective or what!

A PETITION calling for a clamp-down on people playing music on buses has been handed over at City Hall.
And next week another copy will be given in at the House of Commons.
The petition, signed by 4,552 people, was given to Transport for London (TfL) boss Peter Hendy by Conservative London Assembly member Roger Evans on Wednesday morning.
The move comes after Mayor Ken Livingstone said young people playing music out loud on buses could be stripped of their free travel passes.
Tom Wright, one of the two organisers of the campaign, said he had been surprised by its success.
He said: "We are going to edit the petition so it can be used across the UK. So many people have told us it's not just a problem in London.
"It is a problem on trains and trams, as well as buses and the transport by-laws cover them all."
Tom, 31, and his girlfriend, Valeria Martinelli, 38, started the campaign in September after suffering dozens of noisy journeys.
They demanded a ban on the use of mobile phones and MP3 players without headphones.
Tom said: "We used to catch buses from Merton to Tooting at the same time as kids going to school.
"My girlfriend used to take her daughter on the 270 bus and it was so noisy she used to sit downstairs.
"I make the same journey myself several times a week and to be honest I actually walk it if I can."
TfL director of transport policing Jeroen Weimar said current by-laws made it illegal to play music out loud on public transport.
He said: "We are talking about a small minority of people who are using loud music to be aggressive and intimidate their fellow passengers.
"Any youngster with a free travel pass can have it taken away if they are found guilty of breaking those by-laws."
Free travel for all under-16s in London was brought in last September and was extended to 16 and 17-year-olds in full-time education this September.Bob Spink, MP for Castle Point in Essex, will present the petition to the House of Commons on Monday.
He recently tabled a motion pushing for tough measures against people behaving badly on buses.

Okay Kunjufu, its true its not just a black thing. But it always seems that way not only to me but to every other sorry so and so stuck listening to grime or some rubbish UK hip hop recorded straight from the TV, on their way to work that day.
unfortunetly I always find it is black kids in my area... ALWAYS....
I think pesonal stereos are not as bad if played loudly, because at the end of the day the music is flowing into your ears with some leakage out to the surrounding people, not the entire bus/ train/ tram etc., as that loudspeaker music was never intended to be kept personal its deliberately played out so everyone has to listen- how rude and ignorant! You can cope with a personal stereo blurring loudly its been happing for years and its not as loud as this, though annoying its usually just whispy brassy high hat sounds not sharp clashing badly recorded music complete with terrible ragga or grime lyrics, sound effects and everything else... this new trend is just
unacceptable!

I agree its on a different level from a walkman, some walkmans can be loud/ but the physics of it just means that the mobile will be louder.
And its always that grime music rubbish..
As long as its no swearing then Id say 'low it. However if its N****r this and N****r that..thats when it gets highly embarrssing and time for a dirty look. I did ask some youths politely on a train to turn it down (playing some N****r dis hip hop).. and they were cool..but the mouth on some of thees youth nowaydays means if they do get bright you'll want to take off your belt and lick them down.
Since I cannot be putting my hand on a youth / most times I tolerate it. But if its some ignorant music (generally hip hop with the Nword ) then I will say something. So if you hear "man gets jumped by 10 youths on bus" in the South London Press it will be me..

It's not only the music on the phone sh*t but a whole heap of other things I have observed in terms of how technology has turned black people into base like animals. Young and old for real..I just sit there at times looking at these people like they just came out from under a rock or stone or some bush..
Feel like I am 200 years old unitl you check so called big people doing the same sh*t. What is all this sh*t about talking your business loud on some mobile phone...Folks aint got no shame..
Because to my home upbrining that is a dog or someone who drag up, because your personal buisness is supposed to be personal. I hear black women talking about who they f**k or did not f**k or girlfriend asking did you give him anything and man worse...On the bus with some black middle-class wannabee prick who wanted me to slap the f**king black off him..My man think because he has a suit on we need to know he thinks he is important and kept up one foolish conversation which shows he has more mobile phone credit than sense...Talking absolute foolishness with some young girl on the phone. Over one hour non stop with the bus locked in city traffic listening to this fool.
And all or the majority of them are just posing off and need a life and want to give us an exhibition like they have a life..
@Cashmoney. Dead straight a lot of that sh*t is about the expression of power which includes test me if you bad..And when I am in an ignorant mood I do and being more uglier than then they put their sh*t away..

Most of the black kids turn it down if you ask though......

I have often asked myself that same question. It's like they use to draw attention on themselves. Sometimes, I see young guys just speeding down my street with music enough to wake up the whole neighborhood. I remembered on of my neighbors calling the police about it as there is a such thing as a nose ordinance laws. I just don't see how they can listen to it like that. By the time they turn 25 years old they are going to be deaf!

man this stuff is terrible. grown men do this crap too. its an attention thing also, besides the fact that its a test me thing .
whites black they both do this. things like this make me sick of life in london. i was on a bus and this blk dude started busting a rap. me being the only blk dude in the bus i ignored him.
dude had the guts the call me saying hey blud you deaf, im spitting all this rhymes and you ignoring me. dude said i could go to hell. he said he was gonna die anyway. like biggiesmalls. the sh*t iv seen some blk folks do in public just makes me want to ignore loweclass blks because thats what they are swines like them white chavs. this dude went as far as abusing passengers on the bus telling them they shouldnt fuk with him. claiming his from the streets and owns the streets. infact i aint bothered to finish the story.
there's this macho act going on where blks try to prove how hard they are. and fukheads whiteys trying to test brothers.
these people need to be gased.

I've read all your points and yes I do agree to a certain extent. But let me ask. Are you angry/pissed (what ever you call it) beacuse of the type of music they play? If it was Gospel or classic they are playing on their phones would you still think its
inappropriate?

It doesn't make any difference what type of music it is, its just annoying and rude to disturb people in public in that way.
I can't stand to hear the youths playing rap with swearing or N words in the lyrics when there are young kids about, but the turkish man playing his native music, annoyed me too.
It was refreshing to hear some young girls playing lovers rock the other day, but then they started singing - LOUD!
All these phones are supplie with HEADPHONES!

It's ironic that you asked that question. Besides those guys coming down the street, There was another neighbor of mine who also did the same thing. She's was a woman who had parties just about every week and she played loud music. It wasn't rap, but it was RB and Pop. People didn't have any problems with her parties, her music was the problem. Her music was so loud that you could hear from my street and two streets over that. In that case, the man who lives over on the next street called the cops on them. My neighbor was the second to call it on those guys.
The kinds of music should have nothing to do with with the volume of it. It's not right that you're trying to get some shuteye and you have to put up with it. People should have enough respect to know what is proper and improper. It's a pain going to bed at almost 12 at night with their music ..aboom boom, here and a boom, boom here. I'm suprised that the bodies of their cars havent blown off their cars because of the heavy duty volume of their music. My street also consist of older people who don' t like a lot of noise like that. They range in age from 30 to 100 years of age and it's not right to them. It's ok for them toplay their music, but they should at least show some respect.

Even though this behaviour is not exclusive to youths id say that it is the human equivalent of a cat pissing in a corner,marking out some territory for themselves......no matter how much it vexes the majority.
Fortunately I never travel on public transportation without my ipod so it tends not to bother me unless the music is soooo loud that I can hear it above my tunes.
One day when im flush im gonna invest in some BOSE noise reducing headphones(they cost about 200 bux)that way i'll only hear the ish I wanna hear.

I hear you wifeable. A few weeks ago I had to get a train from the depths of Surrey back in to London and for about 7 long train stops I had to endure 3 girls (black unfortunatley) talking so much rubbish and one of them playing their crappy tinny Sony Ericsson with the most rubbish ten a penny, generic dancehall, grime you will ever hear in your life. The tunes were just dry and the sound quality sucked. Now get this, it was so loud that I could actually hear it over my own iPod which I couldn't turn up any louder because I'm losing my hearing for these pickney. I felt so sorry for the rest of the people on the train because you could see they were either trying to read or were just coming from work like me and were tired. They don't pay all this money for a travel-card for this kind of disrespect. But many people have hit the nail on the head when they say that the kids are testing people, notice how they are only really playing music this way when there's a few of them? When the girl with the phone's friends got off, she turned it off. They just want to test but I'm scared that one of these days I'm going be very tired and irrittable and fail that test. So when you here on London Tonight that a black woman has been arrested for drapsing up a youth on the train, it will be me! I'm fortunate enough to not have seen an adult behaving this way. Yet.
I know that its a cliche to say that in my day (I'm 30) it wasn't like this but I know that I'm not dreaming when I say that in the last 10 years, practically since the day Labour (and no I'm not a Tory supporter!) got in to power the children have got more and more out of order. Many of them know all about their supposed rights and not enough about their duties towards society. They are practically untouchable and don't they know it.
