Now-a-days everywhere I go I hear how girls are only checkin for the lightskin brothas.  Espcially them jr.high and  high school girls.  For me, light or dark, every man has a mind.  But back to the subject, why are we only wanting one catorgoery of black?  Because when you do really think about it, is there really a difference between being light and dark?  If you were darker, you'd still have the same views and have the same personality.  We NEVER hear whites complaining about being an olive white or a pale white.   So bottom line, is it true, light skin bros are in style?

Kunjufu, i was thinking the same thing. Why is it that the under 18 forum is filled with so much sh*t. Is this what wories our youth, is there not more important things to discuss, that you had to start a thread about this nonsense. This light skin vs dark skin debate is rubbish, its so irrelvant and played out.

starting a thread to ask nonsense like: "is it true, is light skin brothas in style?". what kind of foolishness.

What would you prefer to hear: someone say they like lightskin BLACK men or someone say they like WHITE men? If most girls are going for lightskin men and u prefer darkskin then at least u have more choice so u should be happy.  But most importantly stop worryin about what other people are doing and concern urself with ur own affairs.

Not for some people, thus the reason it is discussed so much...

Im Hotep,

Stop it.  Just cut it out right now.

How can a skin color be in style?  That any Black person would be concerned if other shades of Black are "in style" speaks of a mind that is wrapped in the chains of colonialism and self-hatred.

You know what's in style?  Education and entreprenuership among Black people.  Last year saw the largest increase in Black businesses opening up, mostly thanks to the internet.  You know what's in style?  Afrocentricity.  Knowing your history.  Read about ancient Kush and look at the pictures from the temples of Kemet and see all the shades of Black people standing together before God to create the most influential culture of all times.  Put aside this slave foolishness while you are young and nothing can stop you from accomplishing your goals.

LOL! I thought these type of posts were banned. Im glad to be male anyway, because in all honesty this whole light skin vs dark skin issue never really applied to us. Im just glad that whenever there is such animosty amongst brothers, its never to do with the shade of your skin. Its mainly a female thing.

What's wrong with her prefrence of light skin ..... that's her prefrence. Is it ever a problem when a black person says they only ever go for dark skin peeps, cause it never seems to be. What makes your prefrence any better than hers. She's entitled to it.

Excuse me but your wrong, cause it is more of a female thing, and honestly, mostly just a female thing. In society, dark skin men never really have problems with attaining status in society has singers, actors, and so on, whereas in these areas like, music, videos, and hollywood, the only black women you ever really see these days are light skinned, and it's very well known its harder for black women in that field unless they are of a certain look, whereas black men are just generally accepted from all shades .... jamie foxx, will smith, eddie murphy, and so on.

This person is under 18............its all about looks at that age, then you grow up...as she will.

In fact, on second glance she is not actually saying she has a preference at all....shes saying what she noticed in other people in high school............the title question threw people off a bit..........

Actually I think its a perfectly legitimate question and I can see why it was asked.

Some of you older folks are too harsh! :P

You're tellin me you don't remmeber bein at school at that age and getting that impression? cos I cirtainly do. And i know for a fact that a lot of people, male AND female would only go for lighter skinned folk cos their friends were doin it. hell i know someone who thinks along similar lines now and he's in his 20's! I think thats what Diva meant by "fashion". Sad thing is, some people don't grow out of that stigma. I know a guy who refuses to go out with black women and will only go for mixed race girls. His words we're "its all about mixed race girls innit". When my boyfriend asked him how he came to this conclusion, he couldn't give a clear answere which suggests to me, that he hasn't grown out of the f**ked up mentality that you tend first experience when you are out of school. And this boy is as dark skinned as they come so what does that say to you?

Anyway lilsoulful1 makes a valid point. No one complains when you say you are primarily attracted to dark skin but when you say you are primarily attracted to lightskin, there is a problem. However, my answer to that is that the origin of being only attracted to light skin had often stemmed more from the self hate model that we experience day to day. So theres nothing wrong with having a light skin preference but its the reson behind  it that causes the debate. Are people attracted to light skin purely because they are taught NOT to apprecitate dark skin? I was once seing a guy that freely admitted that his primary attractioon was indeed to light skin girls. But on average, the larger proportion of women he'd been out with (including myself) had been far from light skinned. Thats an example of someone who has a preference but by no means lets it put a restriction on who he decides to be with.

Just my two pennies...blktype

I dont think i'm wrong. somebody called tobitrice or something said in this thread that he's so glad to be male, because this whole lightskin/darkskin issue is solely a female thing. Firstly men started this nonsense (and i'd probably guess it was white guys), from the top doggs in the media showing us the supposed standard features of so called beauty. Dont get me wrong, there are some black females who have issues with their skin and ethnicity, but that noway outnumbers black men, just check out the amount of black male serial interracial daters, and many black male strictly interracial daters say the most nasty sh*te about black women like their mothers. like you said check out music videos, whens the last time you have seen a real black woman. these artists do actually have say with regards to which video girl they wana have in their video. But look at who they tend to choose.

Black female artists are different, 9 out 10 times they have a black video guy.

I was watching Amerie on the tyra banks show the other day, and she was speaking about how a lot of BLACK MEN WERE, the way they were only interested in her racial background, "so what r u, fillipino wow man, your good hair blah blah blah," she said how shallow that is and that she has no time for guys like that. she said why cant jus being korean or jus being black be beautiful, why it gotta be mixed to considered beautiful, and she's so right.

A black male or female can suffer from self hate and have the whole skin issue problem. But I still think black men are the worse.

The world does not recognise pure black/darkskin as being beautiful period. It seems like a lot of black men have that view too. (black but not too black)

Yep, very good points Soulstarr ....... I myself, i'm young, but I don't have any prefrence at all, cause I find blacks incredibly attractive in both shades, and then theres the blacks that I don't find attractive at all from both shades. I myself IN MY LIFE COULD NEVER EVER say I don't like dark skin or either light skin cause it's just not true. To be honest quite frankly, black people to me are just BLACK no matter the shade ... I don't even see the skin tone really, it's just the black man and woman
