The title of my dissertation was "A critical analysis of seven major critical responses to Josef Conrad's Heart of Darkness". The point was to demonstrate how by ignoring the limitations of the form and some of the key asssumptions of a pre-eminent European writer in his treatment and presentation of The Other, literary criticism in mainstream academia is corrupt at the very core.
Would be interesting to hear about other ppls dissertations

my disssertation was about the black representation in the media.......the head of the media department was well impressed. also many of teh media heads now ensure they teach a good portion on cultural representation in particular black people and media
but that was back in 2002

LadyDay..did you look at Empire Road and Wolcott?
Perhaps should explain that Empire Road and Walcott were respecttively the first black soap and detective serial on British TV and were produced as a result of the fall out from the 80s riots. They were mostly written and directed by whites so it would be intersting to see again how black life was being imagined by these creative bods - especially in that historical period - and compare it with later stuff mostly written by ppl like Amma Asante. Fair to say that there hasnt been any significant piece of creative writing until fairly recently with Elmina's kitchen and Roy Williams work.
My mate would disagree vehemently though....................

You know the security services are watching this website closely and they are singling and narrowing down people with certain thoughts on ceratin things-PROFILING
And if I would start to tell you what I think of Qutb then I believe that their signals will switch into red as you cant talk about the political Islam without mentioning Sayyid Qutb and I believe he is one of the most influential people of the 20'th century especially if you look at people like Bin Laden and Zawahiri they are still little babies and couldnt even work out on the true meaning of Islamic brotherhood let alone Jihad as I think they are a bunch of privilaged righ guys who love the adventue while qutb believed in making the changes from within though he failed
I have only read couple of works but the ones that I think moved me alot are Al-'adala al-Ijtima'iyya fi-l-Islam (Social Justice in Islam) and Ma'alim fi-l-Tariq (Milestones)I dont know if you are a muslim but to understand his works you need to know why he was dis affected by the Secularist state and how he was influenced by the revivalist within islam itself..which some dont know started all the way back at the time of the prophet and during the islamic state during the second aqaba all the way through Othman Dan Fodio of Nigeria and Khomein of Iran
What we have now are stupid or not so stupid security analists in MI6 and Home land security who dont even know nothing about the guys they are fighting against and why ideologies like the ones Bin Laden and his AL QAEDA pocess as most link it with WAHABISM and falsely telling the public how wahabism is bad and so on without telling them that wahabism as ana extreme ideology of Islam was created by none but the British!
Back to Qutub I have my own reservations on his views on women and their role but I'd rather say that its the same westerners w believe that westerners tend to think think of islamic societies as backward looking,oppressed by religion and inhumanly governed comparing them to their own enlightened secular democracies but measurements of cultural distance btn the west and Islam is a complex undertaking, and at distance is narrower than they assume.You see Islam is not just a religion and certainly not just a fundamentalist political movement it is a civilization and a way of life that varies from one muslim country to another but is animated by a common spirit far more humane than most westerners realise nor do those in the west always recognize how their own societies have failed to live to their liberal mythology after all aspects of islamic societies maybe only FEW decadesbehind socially and technologically advanced western ones in the end question is what path leads to the highest quality of life avarage citizen while avoiding the worst abuses-the pat of the west DOES NOT provide all the answers and from reading Qutb works I believe Islamic value deserves a serious consideration-How do we go about it is the main QUESTION ...have you realised I started a thread about the clash of civilizations but not many contributed?
