I graduated from UCL in 2004. I studied pharmacology and there were two other black people on my course as well. The black population at UCL is very small compared to King's and of course those 'all-black' unis like Southbank, UEL etc. What are you planning to study?
All I can say is that you will find lecturers who will try and challenge you and intimidate you cos they don't really think black people should be ther in the first place. My personal tutor was like that. He was racist and he always put me down during tutorials. Since I grew up in Austria, where the racism is blatant and open, I didn't find the subtle racism at UCL a challenge. But you have to be prepared to prove to them that you're capable to achieve their high academic standards. I don't regret having studied there, since it's a well respected institution, If you get an offer, go for it girl, it will help your future career a lot if you go to UCL. Also, another adive, take an industrial year after your second year. This will make you even more marketable when you graduate.

All I can say is that, you will have to be comfortable with being the only black person in a lot of situations and not have trouble with hanging out with whites or Asians. As I said, for me it wasn't a great deal cos I grew up in Austria, but it may be different for someone who has never been in this situation before.
Yes, there is an ACS but I never bothered to check out their events. I noticed that the few blacks at UCL are not really interested in getting to know fellow blacks at uni, they rather see fellow blacks as a competition. Most of them seem to feel more comfortable with whites than with blacks, i.e wannabe whites. The way they behave, the language they use, the way they dress and express themselves is just a complete contrast to how blacks at unis like southbank are.
Check out the open day UCL to have a brief insight!

Why do you say that your fellow blacks at UCL were wanna be whites? In what way do you mean? You mention the language they use, the way they dress and express themselves as an example. Why do people always assume ALL black people have to fit into this little box where we must all dress the same, or speak the same etc. Its REALLY
annoying.
Using people at Southbank as a standard of measuring proper black behaviour is laughable. I suppose we should all wear hoodies and trackies all the time now and say 'safe', 'blud' or whatever to everyone then to fit the ideal 'blackness'.

@true: To me it is more the attitude those UCL blacks have that makes me call them wannabe whites, blacks who prefer hanging out with whites, who are more comfortable with whites than fellow blacks. Forget about the dressing style or language, but the attitude is what sucks. Do you know how white people behave behave when they are uncomfortable with being around black people? That's exactly how them UCL blacks are. At least the ones I came across. I agree with you true that we blacks should not be fitted into a little box where we must do this or that. But that doesn't mean that we should be fooled in thinking that we should lose our identity in order to 'blend in' with white society. I was always trying to get to know other black students from other departments but I seemed to be the only one who had this interest of wanting to get to know fellow black students. I think at an institution where we are literally a minority (I have not seen any black lecturer at UCL by the way!) I think solidarity and companionship amongst ourselves is very important.

@Africanmixx22
Ok thanks for clarifying that. Because I happen to have only white friends at my uni because its mainly white-populated, which is unfortunate but can't be helped. It was very weird for me, being from London and having the majority of my friends being black...but what can I do, just have to grin and bear it. I mean they're nice enough people but I would prefer to have at least one black friend here. Doesn't help that I'm a bit shy and very picky...the black boys at my uni are mostly chavs and the girls are a bit 'stoosh'...

I didn't know King's black population was large? I was under the impression that most students there were asians like queen mary's?
I'm quite relieved now because i'm starting my course there in september

Go to whichever Uni is best for your advancement. UCL is a well respected Uni and the fact that it has a low black population shouldn't put you off at all because you will have a good degree at the end of it. When I went to Uni, making lots of friends was a bonus because that's not want I went for because I already had my own friends so I didn't need anymore, although it helps when it comes to group assignments and helping each other out. In any case UCL is in London so if you feel lonely you only have to look out of the window to see black people, its not like its in some valley in Wales! For many reasons, I would choose UCL over Southbank anyday.
