Hey ADLayD, sorry to hear bout all your rejections, I think its really good that you're not giving up. I also had a difficult time deciding what course to study at uni - I did two subject at A'level and was pretty much equally able at them both (but not really fussed about either of them!) making deciding a tuff choice. What I decided to do in the end was a combined course, I looked for a Uni that would allow me to study both subjects as a combined degree and went for that one. However, things didn't pan out (as happens!) and I ended up dropping out after my first year to have a baby! While waiting for my little one to arrive, I went back to college and got another A'level. I adored the new subject I took so much so that when I decided to return to Uni a while later, deciding what course to study was easier as I had a much clearer idea of the type of job I'd want to end up with at the end of my studies and this narrowed down my choice to one subject. I did a single hons in this and haven't looked back since.
Have you any idea why your applications are being rejected? Please don't be offended but maybe, if you're so unsure as to what you want to do, you didn't 'sell yourself' strongly enough to the uni you applied to? I could be worth you having a chat to a careers advisor at your college/school and asking for their input - or if you know someone who's got some experience in this area, maybe they could have a look over your application and give you some pointers? Even if (worst case senario) you get rejected from all the places you've applied to, you could still get a place through clearing (I know tons of people who've done this including me!) - its a scary process as you've got to wait until the very last minute and everything is so uncertain, but if you're serious about going to uni it aint a biggie really.
Not sure if my Stella induced waffle is any help to you at all, but good luck with whatever you decide.

UCAS Extra allows you to apply for one more course if you are rejected from all.

Thanks a lot for the advice Peaceful.
what course did you end up doing?
one uni did give me an interview but because i didnt know how to prepare, i didnt do well at all. and i think the other one's rejected because the course is very competetive. machester wrote to me saying that there was like 1200 competing for 60 places!
anyways what course did u do and where?

| Adlayd, I suspected that you had applied to either dentistry or medicine. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get in. In the UK, it's very difficult to get into dentistry. But don't give up. Do you have an idea why you didn't get interviews? Did your A-level and GCSE grades meet the entrance requirements? You might consider doing a science degree and then apply for dentistry either during of after the degree. What do you think about this idea?

hey africanmix
at gcse's i got 1b 7a 2a*
and at alevels, in my 1st year i got 4 d's because of some personal life problems n crap.
and thats why i couldnt apply for dentstiry then because i didnt have good predicted grades.
then in 2nd year i pulled it up to 1a 2b's and 1c.
but then the uni's pulled their grades up to 2a's and 1 b which p.issed me off after all that.
i didnt know how to prepare for an interview, so didnt do well.
i dont know what degree would lead me to dentistry? and what the chances are of actually getting in, my mate told me like 5 people in the country get to do dentistry as a post grad?
could u give some ideas africanmix or send me in a right direction please!?

I find it hard to believe that your 6th form/college didn't prepare you for uni interviews especially as you were applying for such a course as dentistry! Don't blame yourself.
What stage are you now? Have you finished your A2s, doing your A2s or on a gap year?

i wasn't at college when i got my interview, i had already got my alevels, and i wouldn't want to go back there anyways. i had just managed to get my tutor to write me a reference because he said he didnt have nothing good to write about me, apart from somehow getting the grades that i did.
at the moment i'm on a gap year, earning money to help pay for fees and things.
totally lost on what to course to choos for ucas extra now tho ?!

Otherwise do something like economics or accountancy

i did AS maths and hated it.
i definately want to do something where i'd be helping others some how.
dont think it could be like social care beacuse i have done no course to do with it.
and it would probably be something in the medical feild because i like biology and chemistry.
keep the ideas coming though... im totally lost!

Damn, your college really screwed you over. I think you've missed the chance to get in for Denistry having already done your A Levels but there are some subjects which don't need a specific subject for you to do such as accountancy.
Have you checked the entry requirements for social work? What about Nursing? That'll be a great choice I think. You'll be in demand and the government pays just about all your fees...

yeah i've thought of nursing ALOT! but the doctors are ment to treat you like crap, and it just seems like the work i put into getting my grades was a waste of time. with nursing i have way more points then i need!
africanmix you're doing medicine as a post grad? what grades did u get at alevel and at what uni you doing that? and was it really competitive to get into?

Woah woah woah. Nurses aren't stupid! Its just that you said you want to care for people and that you like Science so it'll be a perfect match.
If I were you, NHS Careers people, they can give you the full lowdown on Nursing and disspell any misconceptions. You should try and ask people who are doing Nursing or have done it, what their experiences were of it. They'll tell you all the REAL pros and cons of it and prepare you for it...

@Adlayd, I graduated in 2004 in pharmacology and I'm hoping to study medicine this academic year. Initially, I wanted to apply to med during my final year, but the exam stress was too much and I decided to take a year off to relax and save some money before going back to uni. On my course there were about 6 students who successfully applied to medicine and one guy who applied to dentistry but he didn't get in. The unis he applied to didn't even call him for an interview. He was the only one who didn't get into his chosen field. We even had two classmates who got PHD offers from Cambridge, so we didn't understand why he didn't get in. It's much harder to get into dentistry than med.
My A-level grades were not that great A, C, C in german, maths and chemistry respectively. My offer for pharmacology was ABB but I got in because I apparently performed very well at the interview.
My tip to you is to get as much dentistry related work experience as possible during your gap year and reapply again next year. Check out this discussion forum which has a section on applying to dentistry http://www.medschoolguide.co.uk/forum/.
You need to get a PERFECT personal statement and PERFECT academic reference, because these are the first vital steps to secure an interview. Also, speak to current dentistry students to find out about their backgrounds so that you can have an idea on what it is the admissions tutors are looking for.
If you opt to do a science degree first, then I would recommend you to a medical or biological science at a renowned university. Don't bother going to them new uni's like southbank etc. If you wanna stay in London, then go for Imperial, King's or UCL. This will greatly increase your chances of getting into dentistry cos every admissions tutor will value your degree if it comes from a well respected uni.

@adlayd, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, maybe you'll get into King's.
Yeah, you could study pharmacology just like me and then do medicine as a post grad. Pharmacology is an important component of a medical degree and most graduates who did med post grad studied pharmacology. But any life, biological or medical science degree would do, e.g. biomedical sciences, pharmacy, medicinal chemistry, physiology etc. You would need to obtain at least a 2:1.
