Does anyone know of any useful websites that can provide concrete info on what you need to do, to practice social work in the states. I'm currently doing an MA in social work and would like to practice in the states once i've completed my studies.
However i have discovered it's like finding a needle in a haystack, to get any useful info that speaks plain English. ive tried the NASW and other such relevant sites but to no avail.
can anyone help!
thanks
Kwela.

Maybe you could 'Google' US colleges, look at some on-line perspectuses and see what they say about transferable qualifictions. I'm more than sure your MA is acceptable, but maybe at a more practical level they would want you to take their own exams . They may have info/details for overseas students. You could alwas e mail to ask. I don't think social work agencies in this country would be able to help as they are focused on this country. I am assuming you have already searched the NET for American social work agencies, but if you havn't you could try that. But in the main Americans like you to have their own qualifications, which is why i suggested you try that avenue before you contact their agencies.
My mother may be in this position soon, as my sister has just married someone from Miami and is looking to emigrate. My mother has 20 years experience working with the elderly and recently in the past few years adults with learning difficultis. She is currantly working towards her NVQ but would probably need an American qualification. But you KNOW there is work in Miami for anyone who has worked with the elderly lol it's just a case of gaining their qualifications.

The US have very tight immigration rules and so it will be hard for you to practise there. you have to either get a job with a company here who will transfer you, get a company to petition the government to say that they could not find another american to do the same job, play the green card lottery, or marry someone!

@ Kwela - in addition to what Kunjufu said, the licensing and regulartory requirements for social workers differ from state to state here in the US. So perhaps the first thing to do is to identify where exactly you want to work and then contact the health and human services department for that state.
As I live in Maryland, I will give you the info on Maryland. Hope it helps and good luck!

@Happiness, thanks for the website, i've emailed a contact person in charge of licensing, hopefully i'll get some useful feeback. I'm thinking of NY/NJ. Paris, it's the thought that counts.
@Kunjfu, i have contacted the GSCC, but they are not willing to provide any useful info, since they are trying to recruit more social workers here. However i will try the BASW.
Thanks to others who provided sources of info. will let you know how i get on.
