I am writing an article on foundation degrees and I am keen to speak to any black student currently on a foundation degree course.

I would like to know what you are studying, why you chose your particular course, are you also working and what do you plan to do at the end of your course? (are you planning to do an extra year to gain a full honours degree)?

I will supply full details of publication/credentials for any intersted persons.

Studies and data compiled this year indicates that although a higher percentage of ethnic minorities  enter higher education than whites, black students do not perform as well as other ethnic groups or whites and are more likely to drop out. In addition black students are under-represented in education, humanities and physical science subjects. I am looking at black students on foundation degrees to ascertain whether the new qualification may signal a change in the take up rate among black students and to see how the new qualification is being used in career development.

By the way, I am African Caribbean.

blkscholar  Hi,  I did a foundation degree in early childhood studies.  I am now studying for a  BA whic I will complete this year.  I chose to do the foundation degree as a route into teaching.  The foundation degree is a lot of work/studying when you are working full time.

sorry it took so long to reply, just got back from celebrating New year.

this may be a little late, but better late than never.

To: Researcher

There is NO SUCH thing as "African Caribbean" we here in the caribbean or west indies do NOT embrace such terms. So please dont bring these western labels for my people... take your labels elsewhere.

We are AFRICANS!

@ Ras Berhane Mariam

It is sad that you would make an entrance like that for in your eyes there may be no such thing as an 'African Caribbean' but in the eyes of some such a person or persons  exist. If you don't  identify yourself as such then it is better you don't respond and look for those who are in agreement with your point of view of which (believe it or not) I am one.

This place is called a Village and within the Village you will find many different types of people with many different beliefs and point of views but the is key thing is that we are trying to co- exist while gaining enlightenment.

If you search through the many discussion threads here in the Village you will find that there has been quite a few around the so called 'African Caribbean' identity, it is on those threads that your point of view may carry more weight

Blessed Love Mantings,

well obviosuly, you werent paying attention, that was not my "entrance" has i have made 4 other postings as well, so maybe you should check those out. Also, im assuming that i have the right to entre how i please?

Secondly, this site is MAJORITY members from the U.K as yourself. Of course persons outside of the Caribbean will idenity themselves as "African Caribbeans" but WE who STILL LIVE HERE IN THE CARIBBEAN, we who didnt go running off to American and the United Kingdom in search of the so called "better life"

There are some of us who have REMAINED in the WEST INDIES (noticed that Caribbean is a vanishing term) to help BUILD our communities, rather than fleeing to Babylon and western, european socieites who were the same ones to COLONIALIZE our people. The only reason "caribbean is still retained" is because of the organization CARICOM.

Again, it is not for persons OUTSIDE of the "caribbean" (West Indies) to decide if its okay to call oneselve African-Caribbean. That decision should be left up to my people who are still here living in this region. Because one has relocated to the USA or UK and feels the need to validate their blackness, or to attract women by claiming so distant island roots, or because one feels more Militant and easier to identify with their cultral and Heritage because they parents and grandparents are from the caribbean or because they themselves lived here one time ago..... DOESNT equate the right for them to dicate what lables are placed upon MY PEOPLE.

WE IN THE CARIBBEAN ARE THE FINAL AUTHORITY ON THE CARIBBEAN, not you whom have forsaken  us in the name of $8.00 per hour wages, and foreign women who are submissive to your beckon calls.

WE IN THE CARIBBEAN ARE THE FINAL AUTHORITY ON THE CARIBBEAN and we say are do NOT want this LABEL.

With respect brother Ras Berhane Mariam,

I was indeed paying attention to your maiden post in the welcome area where you qoute:     'Some very intelligent and seriously conscious black people are on this site and InI look foward to reasoning and sharing with them, but there are also some assholes on here that are a disgrace to african people all over the world.'

My brother we are here to educate, elighten and elivate our people, there is no real need to judge, blame, or  lower ourselves to name calling. It is about empowerment and uplifment.

It seems to me that the researcher may be able to shed some light on the  education system within our community with respect to achievment levels for those who chose to attend University.

to have your  belief respected it is  wise to give respect

I would like to know in your research, are you going to ask any white people as to why they think that there is such a 'problem' with the 'blacks' and education.

I never understand why if we are the victims, why people find it necessary to ask us and look at us for the the solutions without looking at the perpretrators.

I doubt that bringing in yet another useless scheme such as foundation courses (and why go lower?) would make a jot of difference, if people do not feel welcome and happy in any course.
