I am curious to know what do majority of black people who go to university study?
What issues effect their choices of Universities and the subjects they take?

I know that when I was looking to do my first degree it was 'proper' subjects like Law, Economics and Medicine that were to be considered and anything else was seen as 'playing'! When I chose to do Politics and Japanese most of the people in my family asked things like 'So...are you going to be a politician then?' And 'what do you want to learn Japanese for?'
When I topped this up with a Law degree, relatives and family friends (African!!) were more approving!
Usually when it is said that so-and-so's son/daughter got a first or distinction, the praise starts until the question of 'what was it in?' is posed and the answer comes back as 'Media studies' or 'Sports science' and then it wanes slightly.
I think that although there is still that 'pressure'/'assumption' that you will study a 'proper' subject at university (if you are 2nd+generation African anyway), parents and individuals are abit more adventurous with their degree choices now.
As far as what issues...money and the potential to get a job when you finish. It may be nice to do 'History of Art' but unless daddy owns an art gallery, how the hell are you going to pay off those student loans you have accumulated in the 3+ years you were at uni? I chose Japanese mainly because there was a gap in speakers at the time and this has paid off....the fact I am Black just adds a twist!

I did French and History, got to go to Canada (french-speaking part) for free (nice).
Proximity to my home effected my choice, not way i was going into the middle of no where.
My interests dictated my choice, i loved the French language at school, and history is very important to know.
Maybe it wasn't the most profitable option like maths or economics, but i don't regret doing what i did i learnt a lot, and i still managed to get a good job at the end of it Last edited on Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 13:19 by respecta

| My original degree was in Writing & Publishing Studies (major) with American Studies (Minor). I had some high faluting idea about going to America and being a journalist on one of those hip hop magazines and correcting some of their mysogyny and partying with some famous people lolol!!! Now i am studying to be a humble school teacher. Go figure. Though i wish i had done American studies as my major, Then at least i could ahve spent a semester over there.

@ Black_power
Seems like we've had similar experiences Black_power.
Black girls doing all kinds of ish that would turn a conscious black male.
Then they give you the impression of 'who are you' because you 'keep it real' and don't lose yourself with middle class whitey.

Blimey! Is it any wonder British companies endup outsourcing jobs to India if these are the calibre of Graduates we produce. It's bad as it is they don;t want to employ black people.

| i began my degree as a combined honours BA in American studies media studies and international relations. i was menat to do women studies but that was dropped by the uni. i hated international relations so chnaged my degree to just joint media studies and american studies, which worked for me. i am a graduate now. i am hoping to return to uni to study creative industries MA/MSC or something with a business studies element.

I went to uni to study English Lit and Lang...my parents and some of their friends were always like @so you want to be a teacher@ - I used to wonder how stupid and naive are you about the nature of education in this country.
Anyway I blitzted my degree, gained a 2:1 from a top 5 uni and now I'm working for a blue chip multinataional in marketing. So far everything I'veachieved has felt like a struggle. I graduated in July 04 and started work in Nov - but when you consider the stuff I had on my CV it was really frustrating not to get a job straighaway and marketing isn't the best known for its diversity.

Da majority of black people who go to university are from less priviliged backgrounds, and were force to watch their parents/parent suffer to give them the neccessities they needed. So their aim is do something with their life, so their kids would not have to watch them suffer like they did with theirs.
i'm not representing all black people's view ust mine.

Black people go to university for education. Surely thats a bit obvious? And choice of uni, well for me it was to get away from London and my family and live on my own(and also because my course is only done in like 5 unis in the country) and its going great so far(apart from the noodles and baked beans...).
Oh, and someone said why do black people go to southbank? Hmm, I dont want to be critical but loads of people go to southbank because they(southbank) have low entry requirements, they take nearly ANYONE regardless of their a-levels or other qualifications.

Greetings in the name of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Sellassie I,
I choose to study Law (LL.B). I already have a degree in Law & Criminal Justice, and now im in my 1st year of Law School. Next semester i plan to do a double major, in Social Work.
The reason I choose these subjects are because InI am a Rastafari and InI live by the principles and traditions of InI faith. I have seen too many injustices and suffering of Rastafari (African |
