Have any of you ever heard of somebody who has started and finished their entire PhD effectively in a year? I know you usually have a two year minimium wait before you can submit, so I'm talking realistically about somebody who gave it hell for leather and did practically all their research and writing in that one final year.
Possible?

There is no way it can be done in a year.

@Coltrane. Agree with BS on this. Only a couple of very very rare exceptions and you are talking about a fraction of one to possibly more percent. But you may have even ruled that out by what you said.

Exceptions to my knowledge and even then really really slim.

1. You are working on a research team where much of the data is already available. But then that is not your data and under most circumstances not your work or usable. Moreover, working on research teams is one of the best ways to ensure your thesis does not get finished quickly or in the average amout of time.

2. They could have done massess of the premilimary work over a decade if all we know and then registered for their PHD. But I can't see even then how they could complete feild work, analyse data and have a finished document worthy of examination purposes. They don't joke at doctorate level examinations. People often have to write hundrdeds of final drafts before submitting and that is no exaggeration. Because what this person is saying is that their supervisors were happy and had nothjing to contribute of any professional worth and were prepared to countersign their examination documents for submission.  Not happy with any segement of the work. When a PHd could involve many many segments requiring different degrees of expertise. When the bueaty of a PHD is actually what you learn in the process. You may have to master some area of maths or computation and you hate maths and are essentially a historian.

Pigs fly first from my limited experience.

3. The only other scenario where I can see some chance of what you described from happening and only a slim one which goes the first part of my second point. They could have done the work over a decade and in an philosophically based discipline which usaully based on abtract ideas and pure intelligence and are essentially libary based. I mean you can come up with some unique angle of crticism on Focault in your head if a genuis without doing feild work and inteviewing people and number crunching data analysis and the hard end scientific stuff.

But even then not only have you to write this up to the required professional standards you have to get passed your supervisor.

Nah...When you consider only about 2 percent of all PHD candidates pass without being instructed to make amendments etc and that figure is almost consistent from day one. I think it is highly higly and extremely unlikely for anybody to do what is being claimed. Not impossible, just extremely unlikely.
