blkscholar  Hi there, I wonder if anyone out there can help me (Fredblack perhaps?).  I'm new to this site (got here via google).  I'm doing my dissertation this year and am researching youth crime (especially young people involved in gangs) linked to the family.  I'm a mature student (mother of 2) and work full time in a school so have 1st hand knowledge of the pressures young people and families face.  Has anyone got any experience/stories, personal views they would like to share either on here or would like to email me.

blkscholarblkscholarblkscholarHi there, thanks for taking the time out to reply.  I'm doing an BA (Hons) Early Years degree, which is why my dissertation is linked to early years.  I'm ploughing through various books at the moment including,   Sociology, making sense of society (Marsh, I.), Youth Justice (Muncie, Hughes & McLaughlin.), Youth & Crime ()Muncie, J.), Inclusive Education: Diverse Perspectives (Nind, Rix,Sheehy & Simmons) and many more.  I'll also look at psychology and sociology journals.    Which authors would you recommend?  I also plan to visit the local police who have links with our school.   (Why do I feel that I'm justifying myself to my dissertation lecturer?)

@Bluenoswidow.

Some recommended texts:

1 Policing and Multi-Racial Britian by John Brown I982

Study location Handsworth, Birmingham

2. Tarnished Vision: Crime Conflict and the Inner City

Study location Stonebridge Harlesden

3. The Art of Being Black C Alexander 1996

West London,

4. The Broadwater Farm Inquiry Gifford 1986

Tottenham, North London

5. The McPherson Report into the Murder of Stephen Lawrence I994-see Section on Education and Crime

6. Don't forget the criminologist bible The Oxford Handbook of Criminology 2nd or 3rd Edition. You will find the top people on the subject in there and definitely in the footnotes.

7. Also do a search for. Damn what's her name Professor Kate Panter or Painter. She is an authority on this area and produced work on indicators of families at risk which indentifys key factors which predict offending behaviour in families. The most obvious being poverty...

Some observations about some of the recommended book and why I cited them given there is a lot of material on this subject. Brown and Robins cite for me some very important observations about the Caribbean family and crime insofar it shows what many of us know that many offenders came from almost perfect families if there is such a thing.

That is very important, especially when compared to majority of studies today which deals with the family outside any historical context. So misses the question about how things have changed and why. Hence the over emphasis on dysfucntional family units etc. When the effects of social factors particular racism operates on both ends of the spectrum.

I just remembered Earnest Cashmore's "Rastaman"(1982) which talks about the family and how according to him is unable to provide adequately for males given the various pressures and conflicts etc which lead some to rebel and others into crime.

Just remembered Lambert J 1970 "Black People and the Police". I don't know your supervisor's area/s of expertise but if they are experts in crime or policing or anything to do with race and African-Caribbeans in particular. They will see in a second if you do not include Lambert. He wrote probably the first major book on
race and crime and showed that we had the lowest crime rate in the country. So it is a good base indicator for how things have changed in 30 plus years.

An important warning. All or most of these authors and the one's I have cited as good text also contain plenty racits and other erroneous crap. So you need to approach the material critically. For example all of them use a bias reliance on pathology to explain African-Caribbean family which is typical in how these people treat black people generally and use plantation culture as the major explanation.

So rather than doing what Jamacian scholar Hernandez who examines all types of families and has informed the approaches of most Caribbean scholars to inclued

1. Nuclear type families

2. Extended families

3. Various types of single parent families.

The only concentrate on 3 and utlise some of the most offensive and erroneous foolishness to inform their theories. That is why I mentioned Robins and Brown to counter that in terms of family types.

Finally you may wish to consider contacting you local authority voluntary sector or grants Unit/Department and ask them for a list of family organisations. They can give you an insight to the pressures many families are under and type of issues and may even arrange for you to speak to families or that kind of thing.

Don't ever rely simply on the police because even when they honestly believe they are telling the truth they are not. During some work I was involved in they were telling me things about particular black leaders being related to gangsters and all kinds of stuff which I could prove was crap and in fact the evidence actually came from them.

What location are you choosing to do your study. You mentioned police I assume you are talking about the local police and not Scotland Yard. If so you may need to consider what community you choose to focus so your work is more cogent and not disjointed.

I mean where are these families coming from or located. Big council estates are always most favoured usually as you will usually have no problem getting data as usually all the critical factors are there but it is not of course unique to council estates.

Good luck

blkscholar Fredblack, thanks for the help and information.  I shall have to get searching for some of those texts.  The one by Professor Panter/Painter sounds interesting.  I actually work in Handsworth so the book by John Brown should make interesting reading.  A member of staff has access to women (mothers) whose families have been involved in crime/gangs.  I don't think they'll speak to me face to face so I'll  probable have to resort to using a questionnaire.  I work full time, I'm doing the degree part time and am also studying for something elso so I can't really make the dissertation too broad.  There's just not enough hours in the day!! I'm only at the proposal stage so I'll keep in touch as I progress.  Thanks again.
