What with learning to knit twice, buying laptops twice, numerous problems with your computer, then wanting numerous stuff for it, your job, your marraige and a young child and now studying and changing your mind with what you want to study - that is postgrad or no, you decide on another degree or no, decided in the end to do a degree with the OU, then changing your mind over what you study, now you don't know what to study .... perhaps the time has come to ask yourself a)what exactly is it do you want? and b) have you the time!!?

Did you even do anything with your original degree which was at first journalism but later became media???

Athaba its not that clear cut. mmm seems i need to tell unno less cause some of you taking notes...hmmm....never bought a laptop twice did loads of research. certain purchases require me to have aquired certain knowledge not forgetting money plus  i did do some research for a friend as you do..... of course you'll need software for any pc or laptop...knitting...im gonna subscribe to it. i used to know how but cant remember but it will keep me going

i have never studied journalism...though there is a journalism rather periodical press course throgh a top journo body but cant save for it at the mo

how many people reasitically do anything with their, my uncle has 2 degrees and a masters

i know what i want to do and its not one thing. for me as i cant visualise the correct order i feel i am on meltdown. i love writing. i love learning

with the ou its to do with learning styles

at uni no probs grasping topics that i had to do as pre-requsites because they were taught and self taught

i did get good feedback on my work

time .....i rather try to achieve what i want then to think about it.....

LD Saida kinda touched on what I was going to say. Maybe time to just take time out and think which is an investment not a waste.

But funny you mentioned journalism. A bredrin of mine teaches on a wicked and very popular photo journalism course. They have to fight off students because it is a very practical course and a step into that area. They have long standing contact with papers etc and won awards.

Alas it is in London but you could find something similar in your ends...

i have achieved quite a bit in my time

i definitely will be looking to do a writing course but think i need some sort of business studies because once i start getting my feet wet i will want to know im doing things right

the problem with the short ou course is that choice was limited and that i picked a topic i would never have blinked at in uni school or college

i want my phd by the time i hit 40s, a way to go, who knows but i will get there.

as i said i feel my problem is i do know what i want to do education and career wise(past times/hobbies dont count) its just im not sure which order is right so that i am balanced.

Do something you really enjoy. I am currently doing a Masters and it is something I really enjoy. I get to write about things that mean something to me, so I put more effort in and hopefully this shall mean I will get a better outcome.

Take it easy. Don't be in such a rush. Find out what it is you REALLY want to be doing and then go for it. Once all that is in place then the PhD will come into being.

Like you I too have high aspirations, but take it easy and enjoy the process as much as the end result. niceone.gif

@ LadyDay

Ever thought of doing something that allows you to focuse on your writing interest?

Maybe a course in writing, say, screenplays, novels or whatever genre of writing most appeals to you.  By undertaking studies that allow you to focus on the practice and theoretical aspect of something you may only be doing as a hobby right now, could equip you with skills turn that 'hobby' into something more.

I think people tend to look at degrees and further education from the perspective of how it can help them 'career wise', or at least to enhance their ability to 'earn' a 'better' living.  That's why people end up in professions, they may be well-qualified in, but are bored out of they head with.

For a change why not look at a particular course of study or an educational direction, from the perspective that it can 'enhance' our skills in an area of activity we simply.....well.....enjoy?

Learning the 'skills of your trade' in say, writing, may not look like a way to 'earn a living'  at the outset. But who is to say that you wouldn't come up with a way to turn what you love doing into something that also puts food on the table?.....if that's where you want to go with it that is.

At the vey least it will nourish your spirit to be doing something that gives you great satisfaction.

Respect

It is true though. I am guilty of it too. When I was doing my degree I was so caught up in getting a 2:1 (which I did) that I never enjoyed the learning process. Now, when I look back I realise that it was a wonderful time in my life, and I learned a lot of lessons, and I met many wonderful people.

So, I take each day as it comes now, and I realise that each day has something unique to offer. Also, sometimes overcoming the struggle to get to where we want to be, is a greater achievement than the outcome itself.

Right, now you are struggling to find your true calling, but embrace it and enjoy it. Take time to find out who you really are and what makes you tick.

You sound confused and making all kinds of hasty decisions, this is prob... why you do have a low attention span! Breath, take a holiday do something other than making more hasty decisions, then formulate a stratedgy about where you want to be in 5 years and how you gonna do it!!! Try and stick to it and dont lose your focus.

however i was cheated i didnt get to do one topic because of a pre-requisite rule, the cheak of them

just spoken with a friend who is a writer

i know what i got to do now

conversation was deep
