To start with and get a decent grasp of math for adults I'd recommend

Foundation maths 3rd edition
Anthony Croft & Robert Davision
ISBN 0-13-045426-5

It's easy to read and I still refer to it myself from time to time.  The exercises are good for practice too, most math takes practice and repetition to get used to.  That has the basic topics that most courses will build from.

Then following on from that I would say you will need a book specific to your course and math is a broad subject.  There is no point getting a book on one type of math and learning that if you won't use it.  For example when I was studying psychology back in the day it was heavy on the statistics type of math.  Now I'm doing engineering it's more calculus and triangles.  I haven't studied economics before to know what you will need to focus on for that but ask a lecturer or somebody who studies it what it mostly entails and buy a book geared to that subject.  It's more cost effective (some of the books are quite dear) that way.  See if you can pick them up from student bookshops or second hand too.

@ LadyDay

Depending on one's budget and time constraints, there is the option of getting some private tuition for a short period.  I have known a few adults who have taken this route, particularly when maths was an element in some wider qualification they were going for.

Another good book is: 'Mathematics The Basic Skills Fifth Edition' S. Llewellyn & A. Greer ISBN 0-7487-2509-1.

I've got both books mentioned and what I like about them is that they both teach and give the answers which a lot of maths books do not do.

Ooh and an original of the book above was written by my ex-teacher!

Ladyday

try searching on a search engine using the ISBN number I gave you.

The only shop I know that sells it is the Blackwells right next to my Uni but that doesn't mean it isn't sold anywhere else.  Try Blackwells website if they have one as well.

Speaking of mathematics, can anybody tell me the best was to go about re-taking my maths GCSE? Or at least an equivalent?  After being at university, I didn't think it would catch up with me but alas it has because I can't do my teaching course without it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh and preferably an evening course as I have to work. Thanx in advance folks!

Soulstarr why not try a learn direct course. It may suit you because once you've enrolled you can learn at your own pace, in your own time, at home, online! Plus you can choose whether you want a qualification or not. There are several maths courses to choose from including GCSE.

If you're in south you can try Morley college, they do some GCSE courses in the evening (though some can be a bit pricey).

Thanks for the book recommendations ppl-I will also be looking to purchase.

I happened to run across this accounting book in a book store and bought it.

http://www.rea.com/display_prod.cfm?p=0878911758&g=0878911758

It has a spreadsheet on the front cover with depreciation calculations.  Depreciation is my pet peev for being underemphasized in economics and accounting.  They have less specialized math books too.

Ok the impatient side of me is rearing its head. Are there any shorter courses I can take over the summer for my maths GCSE or equivalent? I can't handle the thought of sitting in a classroom for another year!!

lol. Not so perfect after all:(

You sure Morley doesn't do summer courses for math? Although I wouldn't expect anywhere to do that, that would be really intense and Math is intense enough!

yeah i know:(. I was just trying to find a loophole lol! I'm definately gonna apply for morley this year I like the look of it. I was just hoping to find a way of applying to start my teaching course this year but I guess it will have to wait, unless I find a school that is willing to accept me under the condition that I  do my GSE at the same time confused3
