| What are the pros and cons of going to college immediately versus taking a few years off to do something within the community?

It all depends with a better degree comes more money, better education, and more respect.

follow your heart....if you think you need a break from uni take one...going back immediately can leave one feeling burned out....sometimes we can benefit more from taking a break and doing other things....jmho...

I think it is better to go straight into graduate school (for a masters) after undergraduate. When you start working, making real money, and getting involved in other things, it becomes really hard to go back to school the longer you wait. Also, when you go back part-time while keeping a full-time job, it can take twice as long as if you just banged it out for another year or two.
Companies will also look at you before someone with only a bachelors degree. Now, if you go straight into a doctorate, then it may have hurt your chances of getting a job right after school. If you want a doctorate, it is better to work on it while you already have a job in your career field. Your market potential increases almost 10-fold because you have experience to go along with that PhD.
One thing to keep in mind is that some careers demand nothing less than a PhD, so you may have to stick in school for the long haul either way, so it is best to just get it done early so you can move on with your life.
