A question for those of you who are at uni or finished uni: What happens next?

I'll have finished at uni in a few months time. I'm not as aprehensive as some folks I know cos I hope everything goes according to my 5 year plan lol. But Education is all I've ever known so I'd like some thoughts on what everyone else did after university, or if you're still at uni, particularly in the final year, what do you plan to do when you've finished?

Why not chill for a year?

You'd have what? - thirty/forty years of work/mortgage/marraige/kids/bills/stress afterwards so why not? ;)

Id love to chill! But my personal plan is to work full time because in 2007, i plan on going back to uni to do a PGCE. Not only that, but i'm leaving home in the summer so i'll guess i'll need the money. But it would be nice if i could at least get away with working part time cos i really wanna make the most of haveing a summer with no assignments looming over my head!

I'm a recent graduate-graduated in September 2005.

What am I doing now SWEET FA! Well still working at my part-time job, going to take on another job (if I can) to pay off debts, save and have fun.

*Oh I'm also saving for another course I will need to take which costs another few grand :P

I'm also looking to start a writing group of some sort.

The writting club sounds good. I'd love to start up some kind of black reading club when i finish. I could do with the recreation after all the years of hard work!

Hi Soulstarr

This the one thing that they really do not prepare you for because upto the end of uni, you're life has always followed a structured learning pattern and then bam, there is no structure anymore and you end up dazed.

When i finished uni, I had to move back home after 4 years of living by myself, that was the worst summer ever! The adjustment was NOT easy at all. My parents and I were really not seeing eye to eye, I really could not cope. I felt very suffocated. Bear this in mind if you've lived away from home for your studies and have to move back home. I really wanted to move out but I knew I was in no position to do so because of debt and no job, so I had to take it.

Another thing, do not rush to get a "career" job because you will feel tied down. I started working in a finance company 3 months after graduating and absolutely hated it so much that I had to quit after like 3 months of being there and this was absolutely the right thing for ME! I used the money I had saved up to travel for about 5 months which is something you wouldn't get to do once you're settled into your life so to speak coz after the job comes the morgage then marriage and kids and blah blah blah, more and more responsibilities

Before I ramble on more than I should, all I'm trying to say is that you should take about 2 years out to figure yourself out, travel as much as possible (you will learn so much!)find out what you like and not like, in that time you will learn what works best for you in terms of work and life. do not rush to leave home where u live rent free

It took me a couple of months to figure that out. I may not take two years to start my career but I wont be going into my career straight away.

I guess you can say I went straight into my career after school.  After my bachelors, I worked for about 2 years with a company that really wasn't of my interest, but gave me great experience in my career field. During those 2 years, I did a masters program and finished in April (2005).  Although many of the things I did in the last couple years I did not like, I viewed it as a stepping stone in life to attain what I want later.  Last summer I moved and took a job doing more interesting work (with better experience) and I am now just doing the everyday grind to make money, pay off debts, save, and plan for the future.

I have 2 main goals right now.  One is to start my own company so that I do not have to work for someone else.  Right now, I am just absorbing the rights and wrongs of business in the technology sector at someone else's expense so I can branch out and do my own thing hopefully real soon.  My other goal is to finish a book publication I am currently working on.

Oh yeah, I just remembered, There is this scholarship program were you get to work and live in New York for a year iof you live in London Or work and live in London if you live in New york. its called the Mountbatten programme. this is strictly legit and a couple of my friends have done this and would recommend it to anyone. Its quite hard to get into but definitely worthwhile. the website is http://www.mountbatten.org/domino/html/mbatten/mipweb2.nsf/83E9F45C11CAA9D58525647300561FE6/738CFB902802AF9B85256D39007CFFFA?OpenDocument

I meant to and thought I had written 'join' a writing group-evidently not. I hadn't thought about starting my own-until now.:D

What sort of writing group would you be interested in joining?confused3

Well, I believe what Dr. Amos Wilson expounded that not enough African-centered writing is being done.  I think it would be nice to join a writing group where people actually researched certain things pertaining to Africa, the Diaspora, and related matters to critically anylyse circumstances and perhaps offer solutions to any perceived problems.

You're right about not jumping into a career job. I just wanna work and save up as much money as possible cos like I mentioned, I'll be moving out in the summer. But the rent is dirt cheap and i'll be with my boyfriend so thats not what concerns me. But I do wanna clear some of the debt that I have cos when I do go back to uni in 2007, I don't wanna have debt haning over me and I refuse to take out a student loan unless absolutely necessary! But the prospect of relaxing and taking my time for a year or two is REALLY inviting to me right now. As for a full time job, I'm gonna try and get a teaching assistant post. That way the days will be short (lol) and I'll know whether teaching really is the right job for me.

Hi Soulstarr...life after uni has been great.  To be honest, I didn't have a great time at uni ending up feeling quite down on life etc at the end of my course. I graduated with a first in business but decided to pursue teaching as i knew the corporate world wasn't for me. .  Completed my PGCE last year and am now working full time as a teacher.  It has its tough times but all in all its been a real confidence booster after uni and the money's not bad.  At the same time if you find teaching's not for you there are so many other options out there where your teaching experience will prove useful... Good luck Soulstarr.  Focus on passing well and you'll have many opitions open to you.  If you need any advice/info let me know. Jammi

Hi Soulstarr.

I finished Uni in 2004, and being a graduate is not a nice feeling if you're not prepared and plan to have money. I'm like you, in a sense that I wanted to make money etc. rather than relax. However, I didn't prepare myself enough. So when I finished uni, I was jobless and spent a lot of time looking for a job and living back at home with parents and just didn't feel happy. I finally got a job (not something I wanted), I had money to move out of my family home.

You want to start the PGCE in 2007. I'd say to apply for TA positions, so you have good experience when it comes to getting accepted for the PCGE. Or what you could do, is register for a lot of agencies and try and do temping work; whether it be education agencies or office agencies. But apply now, you don't wanna leave it too late. I'm gonna be starting the PGCE in Sep. 2006, and I'm trying to look for TA work so I have more preparation for when I start the course. Because you have a plan, you'll be okay, because it's not as if you're at a dead end and you know you're going somewhere.

Make the most of the time you're at uni, because it's the best time. I still miss those days and sometimes wanna turn the clocks back, just so I can re-live it. Because when you finish uni, it hits you that life has become serious. Its not happy-go-lucky anymore.

Hey soulstar, I graduated last summer from my sociology degree, Like you i felt so lost, before and after i graduated i was looking for jobs but couldnt find anything, or rather i could but didnt have the criteria like requested, I wanted a post to do with helping people{teens, mothers, drug users, bereaved}, I started mentoring teenagers with emotional, social and behavioural problems but because i only just started last year I did not have enough experience for what they wanted, so i was quite upset, i wasn't particularly interested in making money i was more interested in starting my career since i am 24, i wanted to get the ball rolling, i want to buy a house pretty soon and have children when i  am 28 so really i have a 3 year plan, so in the end couldnt get a job i wanted so decided to do a masters in social work which is what i am doing now, i will graduate summer 2007 and be fully qualified with a degree, masters degree and various experience within the volunteer sector, my best advice to you would be GET EXPERIENCE no matter what you choose to do, whether it is to take time off, travel, get part time work, even if it is for 2hours a week over a year, i wish someone had given me that quality advice, i was so stupid into thinking a degree would be enough but its not, so good luck and dont give up and dont waste it because you have earned it. xniceone.gif

That's right, you need experience. Volunteering counts as work experience and you can choose a field that matches your career direction.

I agree mostly with what Double N mentioned a few posts ago. From my experience, alot of people I know who are graduating have no future plans outlined. It seems many blacks are not connected with their professors, which I think is somewhat critical in trying to succeed beyond the university. Also, it's easy to get trapped into thinking that college is like high school except to a higher degree (no pun intended). From what I see, N****rz need to ovunderstand that in college you are setting the stage for your future as an educated person. I be damned if I graduate and owe all that money with nothing to show for it. holla

For those in the science or technology sector what you want to do is get some internship and experience while you are studying and try impress them to get a job afterwards.  You'll need it.  Try do a juniour position to rack up working in the environment, learning the working practices, protocols and all that before you take your year out and go gallavanting about the earth.

But this is just short term.  Long term I'm setting up my own tings (hopefully).

I am gonna be in it for the long haul, another 7 years or so if everything goes according to plan. If I maintaing my GPA, I can get into med school here, but if I am short, my plan B is to go to med school in the carribean where the requirments are  lax and also less expesive.. at least without living arrangements.

I know a few guys with their B.A in mangement, etc who still don't have jobs because jobs in their field is so competitive,  if you are gonna be in university get as much degree as you possibly can(masters and so on), cause it will give you an edge and if you can.. head into the physical sciences/engineering because that's where the jobs are.

of course I'mm gonna be racking up debts...

Anyways.. good luck to everyone.

Hey Soulstarr,

When I finished Uni I just wanted to get on with putting into practice what I'd learnt but got an admin job as a stepping stone until I could get into my industry of interest - travel. Only thing is I didn't have all the prerequisites for being a travel agent which isn't what I wanted to be anyway but seems like that's the only way they would let me in. Trust I got all the qualifications they kept telling me I needed but I was put off by the job on offer at entry level and progressed from my admin job to team leader for the next 6-7 years!!

Eventually I found work sooo boring because all of a sudden you were not supposed to think and get into the job....just follow instruction and stagnate doing the same job over and over like some kind of machine. I couldn't take the petty and sometimes liberty politics either and must say that was one thing that I hadn't anticipated beforehand. I was used to working part time jobs to raise money for Uni but this was different.

It wasn't all a waste though because from the time I got the job I was applying for work any and everywhere. I also used the time to do a lot of research, business planning and try out some projects to see if my plans would work in practice. I managed to get two jobs so I could gain teaching experience and made sure I did every bit of training available to me on the job.

Luckily I was able to do all that and start my family along the way. I didn't take a year out to travel as much as I would have loved to because I didn't want to be in more debt. I will get to travel properly though and plan to write about my travels in future.....now though I've broken free from being employed and have only myself to answer to which is even tougher than my ex manager!!

If I could have done anything differently I would have based my dissertation on some kind of business operation then at least it could have saved me time. I will always be learning and studying something though...that's just me.....hmmm...ok I'll shush now...but I'd say keep reviewing your 5 year plan it will change but as long as the essence of what you want to do is still in there you will find a way to achieve it regardless of any obstaclesniceone.gif
