So we are taught that multiplication has precedence over addition. But explain why this is not an arbitrary decision. Why couldn't there be a culture on the other side of the galaxy that decided addition had precedence over multiplication?
If there is no LOGICAL reason for the precedence then it isn't really mathematics it is just an arbitrary convention. If so, calling someone a fool for getting it wrong is a bit extreme. It is mere ignorance of something slightly less than trivia.
Educated people like to believe they have vast intellects.
