I'm a Black female (>30 yrs) returning to school after completing my 1st degree over 10 years ago. While I am excited to return to school, I'm finding it hard to be motivated by my studies. I am guilty of needlessly procrastinating at the worst times (P.S. I have 2 written assignments due in 3 - 4 days and I have only completed the title page ).
Any words of encourage, suggestions or wisdom from this forum.
Ciao,
Queen C

Queen C,
I've gotten my Bachelor's degree not long ago--Last year to be precise. I was 33. I would have gotten my degree a lot sooner if I wouldn't have bumbled around with my classes. There were time where I wanted to go and others when I did not. I blame part of that of my jealousy over my brother's going to college at the time. I bascially went for the wrong reasons. I " sometimes" went to school bi-semesterly, but in recent I just straight out went after that.
Maybe you're procrastinating because you're getting readjusted going to school again. You're probably feeling drained, a little disorgainzed and a little tired and getting used to certain professors who can be very hard.Unless Your grades are super bad, I would never suggest dropping out of the class/school beause you know the deal, it's not going to get any easier. If I were you, I'll take one day at a time. As the days pass by the feeling may leave you. Sometimes our feelings are also an indicator of whether something is meant/not meant to be. If you keep feeling that school lag, by the next semester don't go back, until you can regroup if it's meant for you to go back. I hope that you can get yourself a masters PHD or whatever degree your seeking.--and please, finish that paper! The last thing that you want is a bad grade!

Queen C, much success to you, sis. I was thirty when I entered grad school.
I agree very much with CeeCee re: the importance of identifying the root of the problem. If it is just finding your own pace after 10+ years--I think that is pretty normal and will 'come back' in time, though you do have to either push yourself or make some hard decisions as soon as possible (drop a class/ classes to lighten your load, perhaps?) so as not to affect your grades.
If it is something else, you'll have to address it accordingly: balancing school with work and/or family responsibilities? the "wrong" major? the "wrong type schedule"? Do you need to study with others to start (re-start) rather than all alone?
I think an important thing that students, particularly "older students" overlook is the importance of communicating with your professors. I think you should meet with your professor/s who might be able to help with some ways to help ease you into the semester, and perhaps even come up with early, "extra" (and hopefully not burdensome) work to help with your grades. (If that ever becomes an issue.)
Much success to you, Queen.
Now, get back to work! :-) :-)
Peace

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I really appreciate it. I am in the process of pulling a all-nighter. I have my requisite aids with me a cup of strong coffee, music (Jill Scott), a To Do List and my determination).
Bye, bye for now. I am off to work on my first paper (Research proposal for my Policing class).
Ciao,
QueenC

| I am also a 30+ student, well I guess you must be feeling a bit overwhelmed because I know I did when I first went back. It took me a while to get back into groove, but after a while I did. Although I seem to have lost my edge for studying, I try my best to stay focused. It gets better, just press on and you will be fine.

Queen C, stick at it. Studying's really hard as a mature student as I think you put a lot more into it when you're older. I am 47 and had my graduation 3 weeks ago. I was one of the oldest on the course. The 10 students who got 1st class degrees (including me) were all mature students working full time (and some with families), it nearly killed us.
Make sure you balance everything, and take time off for yourself. There's nothing like a bit of procrastination to re-focus the mind!! Honestly, I think it helps as you need to switch off or you will get very stressed. Good luck, if you want to 'chat' pm me.

Hello dirtyred & bluenosewidow,
Thanks for the words of encouragement and wisdom. Sorry about taking so long to reply to your posts. I attached my face to the grinstone and things have improved a lot since my original posts. I got a grade of 86% on 1 paper (Policing) and I will get the result from my Research Methodology today .
I'm in the middle of mid-term exams so the stress level is peaking. I think I have learnt a very valuable lesson (I handed in my Research Methodology paper 2 days late after pulling 2 1/2 all-nighters) from my last major procrastination session; slow and steady is better than crash and burn .
Ciao,
Queen C

Yes, in the great scheme of things slow and steady is the better than crash and burn, if only it were that simple. Other things get in the way and as parents (especially women) we tend to put things and others first, and then have to catch up later (i.e. staying up all night). Keep going, and you'll get there.

if anything i thiink the mature students are better than younger ones i know many over 40 students that got a 1st or 2:1,
while the younger ones made 2:2 or lower,
they seem more serious minded than younger ones in thier late teens or early 20s
.
its harder studying when you are younger in my opinion. reality aint hit you yet by that time.
this 40 year old dude worked 3 jobs and still got a first during my degree time. while me with all the goddamn free time i had on earth i couldnt even do better..
maybe its just me.
for real though i just think the mature you get the more serious you study no matter how busy you are.
