Erm....... Alot of people have been talking about what uni they have applied to and what grades they have got, but thats as far as it goes...
what happens from there?......
I just wanted to open up this space so that new students at university (and college if u want) can just talk about what its like starting a new uni and moving into halls, making new friends, are the classes what you expected .....That kinda thing.
I am going to the University of Luton and i move into halls tomorrow morning, I am going to be studying Psychology.
I dont keep a diary so i will be telling you all about my new experiences, I really hope everybody will join in. (even students who started last year can give us some advice on what to expect).
Thanks everybody!
Lucia

Im in my 3rd yr at Luton. When i first came i was nervousand excited about starting university and living away from home
When i first got to halls i thought it was a prison cell, it seemed so small. my hall warden assured me it would be okay and its just enough to survive. all i could do was give him a half smile, i was speechless.Soon as all my family left i just had the urge to clean everything.
Im sure everyone doesnt want to read an essay so i'ii just give some advice.Go to freshers week and the party. Speak to as many people as possible there because everyone is in the same boat as you. It will make you feel more at ease. Good luck

I am really sorry people, I started a thread and dissapear for 3 days, i just got my internet up n running about 5mins ago- checked my mail n came straight here.
I moved into halls on saturday mornin and my first thought also was 'Oh my god, im in jail' the white brick walls, tiny wooden wardrobe and randomly placed sink in the middle of one of the walls was a nightmare, i begged my dad 2 let me come home (rememba im 21 lol) but he said id get used to it, my big brother and 2 lil sisters and my dad stayed with me all day til 7pm.
by the time they left i was gettin ready for the hall tour which ended in the student union bar. all they played was cheese music, i didnt hear any hip hop, rnb, bashment (lol i wish) so we (a very close friend of mine from london started here on saturday too) left and went back to our halls.
cos i got home early i got straight to making the place seem more homely- which it is now, i was havin problems with my internet in my room so i didnt have much to do durin the days as classes dont start till next week so ive just been either walking round the area or listenin to music.
But as i said i will keep posting as i go along..........
please a lil input from other uni starters wud b nice xxx

hey everyone,
i moved to bradford university on sunday, and am just trying to get use to the change. Moving here was a bit of a disaster as i have left a lot of things at home and sunday wa a bit of a trauma.
we kinda got lost comming, my mom knocked her broken leg,my faimly left me early, by then no supermarkets were open so i had no food till the next day, none of my flatmates showed up till hours later ( so i was in a flat for 5 alone) and my boyfriend broke up with me because he carnt understand why i wanted to move away.
saying that, things have calmed down alot, my boyfriend and i have made up, i have food and the other three house mates and i get along great, hoping i meet people from my course soon
update tomrow

got back to halls this afternoon from being home in london for the weekend. its a bit daunting like the first day- wondering what i may have left behind.
i live in a flat for 5 also there are only 4 of us here at the moment 2 of the girls walk around speaking their language 2 each other and the other flat mate is a boy and he has been in the flat for about 4days aint i aint laid eyes on him once.
my first classes atart in the morning,i met a couple of girls that seemed quite nice during the induction and registration periods last week. i make friends quite easily so im not really worried about that side of things.
i am in desperate need of a kettle so i will sort that 2moro,but people- keepus posted about whats gwarnin @ uni

aaahhhhhhh MAN!!!! I dunno if icould take that, one plus side to being in Luton is dat there are bare black heds here, iml ooking to join the ACS asap but i couldnt find them at the freshers fayre. so i will have to look into it at the student union.
LEGZ- I suggest u go n find the African & Carribean Society (ACS), so u r in direct contact with the other black students at kent, then it might not seem so bad.
Theres a club up here called liquid which alot of freshers went to last week and said it was heavy so ima go there n see what its like.
but again-- i'll keep everyone posted
Bye

My niece started college this year and I am sooooo unbelievably happy for and proud of her. As I put together a 'Care Package' for her, I thought I would drop in this thread and get some suggestions from you of things to include. I know...I know...I know, money WILL be included. But aside from that, what are a few 'other' items that you'd suggest? Thanks in advance!
Miss LegZ: it just broke my heart to read your post. Sorry to hear that things are starting off a little rocky for you--but don't give up, little sister. I think Lucia's advice was very sound. Find (quickly!) a support group to help you keep your balance. Find out what student clubs exist, find out when/where they meet and plug into it as soon as possible. If it doesn't exist--start it. Though it may seem like you're alone, I'm sure there are other students that feel the same way as you do. Keep your head up!
Keep up the good work all.

well im into my second week and at the moment being here is the hardest it has ever been.
After getting over the blues and reality of leaving home the first couple of days and 1st week was jokes, clicked with one of my house mates really well, was out most nites having a lough with the people around me and things seemed to be going well. well unfortunitly i made the mistake of going back home for a day and a nite to sort out some income tax and official nonsense.
And now that im back at university i feel really lonely, its like i have progressed back to the first nite of feeling upset and weepy.plus watching a documentary about violence in big cities and people getting shot has rattled ma cadge a bit and my mind is playing tricks on me.
suddenly i have gone from feeling that i haved moved to this nice new room thats all mine, feeling indipendant, grown up and takeing responisbility for myself. to feeling trapped in a room thats dark ful off creepy noises ( waterpipes) without my close friends and family.
i mean im fine during the day when im in lectures surrounded by people, and things but when im in my flat and my room mates are out with there friends i carnt help but feel down and lonely, and its hard to motivate myself to do anything.

@ just_ME
im feeling ur pain cuz i was just the same when i first moved, but like someone said before try and look 4 your uni's ACS. Trust me it helps, as you start mingling with other black people you will find it better. Im assuming ur room isnt the greatest but try and make it homely with pics and other things from home. If you've never been away from home its gonna b a bit hard at first but it will get better.
met this black girl from scotland at my uni the other day. she was so nice but she said shes finding it difficult. she said that all people do is take the piss of her acent. So my message to peepz is just bcuz someone speaks different dont take the piss. They're not alien!!

Just want to say to young uni starters..CONGRATULATIONS FOR GETTING THERE. But remember this - you are the true future vanguard of your race, so dont fkk it up. Stay black, but dont condone foolisness. Stay proud, remember to help one another at Uni, feed off other races where you can but ONLY to help yourself and each other, not for THEIR benefit. Dont alienate yourself..make links where you can, no matter how small, with black students from other unis and black students who aspire to attend uni.
Stay black.strong.proud
Peace out.

I am so lost, i dont think u understand!
When i got here freshers week n all dat was heavy but now im baffed. We have not been given a timetable and have been left to find it out from their timetables on the websites, we have modules but we have to sign up 2 classes to basically set our own schedules which is all cool but the is like 4 or 5 of each class and u need a tutorial, a lecture and den some other thing and i cant work it out so im sure im missin bare classes.
someone mentioned they go to luton university i beg u shed some light on dis for me cos if i have to set my own timetable- i may not got to anything.
(i cant believe im paying tuition fees, and they dont even give me a timetable)

i'm starting uni this september, however im staying in London so i don't have to worry about moving out, although i have to say I would love to experience that. I started another thread called A-levels which incoporate these issues, for all the uni beginners in 2006!
