OK this brotha asked me for an advice about a yr ago if he should go to uni and I told him thats him to decide so in the end he makes up his mind and was suprised he called me saying he has applied for grant and so on
I had to be honest with him and told him that once he is done with uni he will be faced with a debt of about 10,000,and since he wont be working he will have to start paying for his council flat though I am aware students are exempt with council tax(count advice him on how to mess up the system) so told him he need to set up side projects to pay for his rent and lastly I told him he should be ready to compete with generation i pod who does nothing but do their course works and assignments by the help of google
the guy was shoked and I got him worried now
not sure If I gave him a good advice but I am thinking on how I should make him feel relax and just chill out...
what do you think was I too honest with him or ?
did I say he is one of them brainy brothas that just need little bit of brushing?

I'm interested to know why you called your thread, 'older students'? What you said isn't any different to what would had been said to any other student, would it?
I don't understand what the problem is. You basically told him that he face being in debt and that he'd have to compete with others upon graduating. Why should he be 'shocked'? Is that news to him?
It depends on how close you are, but what you told him sounds like it isn't a matter of whether you should had been 'nice', its just what's true.

| Honesty is always the best policy, it's good to let him know the pros and cons of uni. Me personally I think its a waste of time, half the people that go through uni don't get a job in the profession they just qualified in, and as u said have mountains of debt to pay off. If he is not working why would he have to pay for his flat? Will he not have to pay a reduced amount or in some cases nothing at all? If ur friend decides to give uni a go I would say good luck to him.

Which is a waste of time? Advising people or going to Uni?

K,
I know u said it ur opinon and that is cool. Whilst I dont believe a University education is the only way to becoming successful in life or excelling at what careers we have chosen, I wont agree that going to Uni would qualify as a waste of time.

| I would if people are spending 3-4yrs in uni, after spending about 2yrs in college as well and have nothing to show for it but a piece of paper. 1 or 2yrs on these said people are still in the dead end job they had before they started uni. It happens.

yea it happens but no to everybody...just consider the % of people working in dead end job...they are probably workin there for the main time instead of travellin or stayin at home u dnt just get a job after ur graduation ceremony.....i dont know about the states where u hear strip dancers sayin they went to college/uni...
but i also think it has something to do about the course....if u hav the guts to study medicine or mechanical engineering and so on....i dnt think u wud want to work in a grocery store at the end of it...
also about this debt stuff most people go thru it,we just have to accept it after all we are not payin the full amount after graduation......payin £20 a month from a £1,700 month pay, is nothin

peace,
I try to tell some of the younger cats that uni isn't all it's cracked up to be depending on your major. If I could do it all over again, I would have either went to community college and then transferred to uni or just went to tech school. Once I had a job making a descent salary, go back to school part-time and a get a higher degree.

Hensekh,
Most of school counselors used to tell me that if you was trying to adjust to a larger school or if you plan on going to a more competitive school, it would be wise to go to a tech school or community college. I believe that when you go to weitherof these school, they are a step to something more challeging. I knew a guy who went to Georgia Tech and any body in my state will tell that this is the most difficult school to get in., not because of the rules and regulations to get in, the work there is REALLY that hard. I was told that there are people Black, White and Asian who thought that really had the good grades and the brawn to handle that school only to come from there in tears. Those who went to a community college were more likely to being able to deal with a school like that. Even in everyday four years schools , it can be an adjustment for people, which is another reason that some people do go to community colleges/tech schools. I have never been to a really small college( part Spelman/Gerogia State University). GSU was extremely big--too big! I wanted to go to a smaller college, which may also be a good idea if you want to adjust or just like the idea of being in a smaller school.
