First off I have to ask where are you located? I'm in the SouthWestern USA and I have to say that it is all relative. I know from experience that many people opt to go to vocation/trade schools, certificate programs while others go to work and get on the job training. I have grown up with Kats that skipped college while I spent fours years, accumulated debts only to graduate and make less money than those kats who went to trade school. Money is important and remember that time is money so that could be a reason.
Another issue is schools, many in the Black areas in the USA have weak to non-existent college prep, science programs and worse. In my high school we had a good guidance staff that sat down with every student and helped them plot their future in their first year and monitored us every year until gradution. It was a requirement to apply to a college or trade school prior to graduation. This worked at my high school where many of the kids parents lacked a high school diploma, didn't understand college or how to apply for financial aide. In the other not so fortunate schools these services are severely lacking and stimulating technology courses are non-existent.
Perhaps you can make a difference and go to the middle and high schools, in and around your community and recruit folks, start a sciencce club and get the ball rolling.Last edited on Sunday June 12th, 2005 19:35 by Baron_Samedi

The main reason I hate the medical field is b/c its extremely hard to get into another field if you arent satified with the occupation.Your pretty much stuck in the medical field, unlike say business..Also to be a doctor it involves insanly long hours with little admiration for what you do...
I also know that in the U.S. blacks are really into entreprenership. So instead of wasting 4 years in college they just wanted to get right into business. I myself am really thinking about taking a few years off from law school to build my business empire...

I did my first degree in the West Midlands, and of a course of 115 people, I was the only Black guy person doing Economics & Statistics. My Masters was a different matter, as it was back home in sunny London, where more people stayed at home with mummy and did the course from home...
Things HAVE changed a lot in the last ten years, with more black people going onto higher education, though often it is at the 'newer' universities with used to either be the old Polytechnics or Colleges of Higher Education....
...all part of Blair's aim to get 50% of the population into Higher Education so that we'll have the most highest qualified call centres in Western Europe... He is ignoring the value of Vocational qualifications, and simply out to create more Worker Ants to keep the cogs of society moving.
To answer the thread starters initial question, we still have the sad statistic that we have more brother in jail than in higher education, part of which being the bullcrap peer pressure of underachieving, so as not to lose face with their friends. Utter bollocks isn't it?
Forty years ago, we had systematic barriers to entry of entry to University that impeded us; now the biggest barriers to entry are the mindsets of the ignorant who would rather play the fool in school, lower their aspirations and reject the infinitely greater opportunities that are afforded to them in the 21st century...
...The sisters are still doing it fine style, but we need more brothers to carry the baton, and pass it on. It's not a dire situation, but one that I pray will continue to get better...
...for our sakes, and for our advancement i the UK and society in general, it has to, for education is the key that opens many doors...

Its all about the foundations you had as a primary school pupil and whether you are financially stable.
If no one (teacher, parent or government) pushed you in that direction, you're bound to take the easy option, and do a course that takes less time to complete, guarantees you a job and requires 'less' learning. Or a course that the govt pays you to do, so less debt. Think social or care work - must be the easiest job for a black person to get in this country.
 I also wondered why i hardly ever see black people at museums and galleries.

Cause black people are ignorant to rass.....! Some black people don't even CONSIDER going to university because the first thing they hear and the stigma around it is that, "THEREs TOO MUCH DEBT" , "YOU DON'T GET A PROPER JOB AFTER YOU'VE FINISHED ANYWAY" .....and all that crap....BLACK PEOPLE are always tooooo fast to jump on the excuses to avoid anything, even though they haven't experianced it yet ! Why do alot of black people carry this ignorant attitude...I DON'T UNDERSTAND...!
I am talking from the U.K prespective looking at the U.K education system....In england, the opportunity and support is there to do Anything you want at higher education, and you don't have to pay a penny until you earn a certain amount after you have finished university...! I think too many young british Black people are stupid (I'm talking about the ones who use the sorry-ass excuses) ...! In so many other POOR COUNTRIES around the world, people have to PAY for there education, and they have to study in the pooriest conditions at the same time...! They would kill for the system that we have, In Nigeria I know people who would study with just a CANDLE!
I have been to so many universities across britain and seen the population of blacks in some unversities and the numbers are terrible..! although there are the ones with high numbers....! It's like I get the impression that some black people who feel they are born into these slightly less advantaged areas, and they feel they have to live there life that way cause there too damn ignorant.....!

Maybe meeting people like you who generalize and look down on them might put them off.
I tell you one thing, when I was at University, you know the people who where the most eager to make friends with me. Whites and Asians, workingclass ones at that, go figure. The Blacks didn't even want to know. Maybe it was my North Derbyshire accent that put them off.. It was only the Blacks above the age of thirty that I had time for anyway, maybe because they don't forget so easy eh!

However don't go because you think it makes you better than the other blacks who may have other goals in mind.

First off studied for diploma in journalism, then took English degree, years later PGCE. . Did higher education make a better more successful person? Hell it did! Without my quals I wouldn`t have: a certain righteous arrogant confidence/access to opportunity/a well paid job/a house in a leafy classy area/a decent car to drive/cash in my wallet at the end of the month.
And all it took was the humiliation of self knowledge followed by the pain of sacrifice and hard work.
At eighteen I had left school with 2 O levels. Job Centre man looked me cold in the eye and said straight - with those qualifications, son, the only job I can guarantee you is a CLEANER. Didn't want the cleaning job so I too the Wimpy burger bar flipper. Lasted ONE f*****g day, a day that felt as long as a week. Later, pissed off with parents, so moved into my mate's house. Cleaner mate takes me to a specialist jobcentre in town that deals with cleaners only. Six AM in the morning - he said you have to get there EARLY or you wont get the job. Arrived and never seen so many blearly eyed, dopey looking, sad, stressed out negroes and negresses in one room. It was was stumbling into a ante-chamber in hades. Make a huge impression on me. Is this the fkking future??? Didn`t get the job though- not enough experience.
Another Big Incentive: Can remember a cold freezing winter evening in Ealing and my mate scared to turn up the elctric heater because of the bill!!! Wicked Winter's draughts!!!
Remember young gorgeous-looking black girl at Hammersmith dole office looking at me, a guilty looking signer- (sign here, please!!)with pity and disappointment.
Crawled back home to mum. Big reality check. There was only one way forward. THe books/thebooks/the fkking books. Made a man out of me.
University..yes, but have clear LONG TERM goals in mind, goals for which your qualification will be essential. Only middle class whites can play at education for education sake. For most of us, education MUST be targeted towards assisting a particular career trajectory. THINK LONG TERM. You wont get the big job in five years, but maybe ten or fifteen years (you are Black after all) but remember YOU WILL GET IT!!!!!!!
YOu want quick money then do bank job, sell drugs, sell yourself - the decision is yours!!

maybe I am being bias since i am vasing my observation on my immediate enviornment
but let me tell you this i attend a university in London that is established since 1859, it is one of the best in science and technology and the at the top twenty in the orld
and i am telling you this 90% of science students and black and asian, whether they are overseas afrocan student or Jamicans they are BLACK
and as peacemaker said Their are not many black people in uk, so how do you expect to see more blacks then whites KMT
stop with this humdrum negativity, if your enviornment is negative, it does not mean evey black person is in the same shoe.
this whole failure of blacks in UK is OVERPLAYED, OVER EXAGGERATED
FACT majority blacks do go to college or university, just leave your enviornment and ask randomn blacks, although you might see many at high senior positons that is due to two reasons !0 discrimnation 2) overseas students and they leave country.
I know my sisters friend who is born in britian and a computer scientist , who has moved to france to work for IBM and their is more.
also last thursday an asian idiot telling me how Tim the winner from the apprentice striked it lucky becaus he used to work for the underground, what that idiot had to to be taught that Tim has got a degree and he was a trainee manager for underground, that shut the fool up.
let me make it clear, just because majority of blacks do not all HEE HAA like cowboys with their degress , it does not imply they do not hold top class degree.
now whether a degree is important or not that is not for me to decide, but i will disagree that blacks do not enter science and technology, go to Kings College, go to Imperial College top ass universities in the world and see the black faces/

Children that have been convinced that they are destined to fail put social pressure on those around them to fail. The kids in the neighbohood called me "Goofus."
Although I could be decent at sports when I wanted to, I found pro sports boring to watch. Science was way more interesting.
Plus I think the plaefaces make learing this stuff more difficult than necessary. The way they teach it you have tolerate tons of trivial bullsh*t to learn how to do anything. I got in the habit of searching for books on my own.

well that made me laugh, because thats how tough and competitive sh*t is nowadays, that you need a flipping 2 year experience for a cleaning job . even seen cases of degree holders doing claening jobs too. since my job is on contract bases when i got no job i gotta go do some other campy lol job i dont wana be doing to pay the flamming mortage.
anyway back to topic. i really dont know where some of you are livin because there are many black students in top universities in uk and around the world. maybe you have forgotten how much african international students pay? even for polytechics transformed to universities, atleast not more than 7 thou. per annum not to mention schools like imperial college where they pay 15 grand per annum and youll still see a good amount of black africans there and you still got floods of them studying and not to talk of the black brits, caribeans etc. youll be suprised to know that those ppl you look down on have got degrees and masters. i make the mistake of misjudging ppl too. i was suprised that some of these kids on channel u are actually in university as iv have seen quite a number of them at a uni im currently doing a short course at.
a draw back to why more blacks might give up on uni is that the system can be so effed up that too get some jobs demands you too kiss ass to the level of even turning gay a guy once told me he did it in the sense of going on dates and all that with his gay boss where he was parraded as a trophy boyfriend just for show off according to him no sex was involved to get a job, this is no joke this was a high paying job beyound his fantasy and wildest dreams maybe he was gay b4 and he is lying but i dont care about ppls personall lives.
anyway emploment for blakcmen is still hard even with a degree its still tough, black women have it way easier, because white employess feel they can be easily controlled.
that asisde sometimes i think university University is a business, and they draw out the learning process as long as it can go, as well as throw some mumbojumbo in there, so that its value is high. making, profits increase.Well I went to uni and still studying some other small course also waiting to do my masters later on and l somtimes it ain't worth anything in real world All it gives is piece of paper that could possibly get me a better nice paying job, as far as real world skills nothing. I am not using any of the high level sh*t I learned,
And as far as getting a job, somtimes i feel like it's who you know not what you know to get a good job.
on the other hand Education expands your horizon and you'll see more than that which your own eyes can give you using other peoples brain to get knowledge its better black folks take advantage of it i say.

That's what i'm saying.....Black people take advantage of this system please....! People around the world would kill for the education we can recieve....it's practically handed to us....! U have to beable to take advantage of this, because once you have a degree it opens so many doors to you and is advantageous in ways u might not realise..! I know alot of people who reach 30, 40, and realise that a degree is truly the way unless you are specialised in a paticualar area that your skilled at and quite succesful, but at least just gain an education of a higher honoury...! It's only 3, 4, 5 years of your young years that will benifit you for the 70-80 years of the rest of your life...! I think people down here just don't realise how much opportunity that we have....Maybe it should be a little restricted for everybody to truly realise how good a thing it is....!
I'm telling you, has a english person with an excellent degree in the states....the opportunities are endless...!"

I am @ King's College and in my class of 400 there are not up to 40 black students. So what's happening to all those rude ass kids that the state schools pump out every year? People who have made it should make themselves more visibleso that those kids no that there's no excuse.

Yeah, i go to KCL and when i look around my class i'd say that at least half are black. Im doing nursing. It makes me feel good to know that my people are doing sh*t for themselves. Especially when i chat to them and they say that they have a real passion for nursing and love what they do, its not just a career for them but also a passion. Then i chat to your average white girl, whos filing her nails, chapping her mouth and talking about which club night shes going to tonite and how much debt she is in. I tell you i am so busy that i dont even have the raatid time to go to clubs and sh*t, so i dont see how they do. But its all good coz im the one passing all me exams at the end of the day and bare of them are retaking exams and redoing essays and sh*t.
So im not sure what you are doing at KCL but certainly i'd say there is more than enough black people on my course and at KCL from what i see. It makes me proud.

I am at the LSE and also taking some courses at QMUL in politics and law. The number of black student in my year at LSE is 5 out of about 300 student (this is not guess work but exact number), with Asians being a majority and for QMUL, in the entire department of politics, there is no morethe 3 students and I know them personally.
