Clark & Clark (1947) asked black and white children aged between three and seven to choose a black or white doll to play with. Regardless of their own colour, the children consistently chose the white dolls, saying that they were prettier and nicer. These findings were replicated by other researchers, and it was also shown that the 'doll tests' are a valid measure of self-concept related to ethnic identification (Ward & Braun, 1972). However, their status has subsequently been challenged (Owuso-Bempah & Howitt, 1999).
Morland (1970) found that when the level of actual discrimination increases, so self-contempt increases. Thus, more black children from Southern states in America chose a white child as a preferred playmate than was the case for black children from the Northen states. As Rowan (1978) has remarked:
'What this means is that when whites are taught to hate blacks, blacks themselves come to hate blacks - that is, themselves. When whites are taught that blacks are inferior, blacks come to see themselves as inferior. In order to cease to inferior, they have (it sometimes seems to them) to cease to be black'.
This is what is being taught in UK Education today.

true wat ur saying.....but i neva once bought a white doll for my sister....and if anyone giv her a white doll she dont want it....she says she wants da brown one.
i think itz a case of how u bring up ur child....to know dat white dolls are evil....lol
for real tho....she's only three...i took her to nursery and da teacher tells me she was shouting 'black power...black power' in da classroom...

As a little girl i ALWAYS wanted a black doll, but i don't think many, if any, were available back then (talking about early to mid eighties). The situation is DRASTICALLY different today and children have dolls/puppets/action figures/books etc that represent them and the children play with them equally. I'm not sayin that there's no truth to these studies, but the most recent was over 30 years ago and there have been alot of changes in that time. I'm not saying its perfect, but its unfair to think those same standards apply to today.

OMG....I AM GOING AS LEVEL PSYCHOLOGY AND I DID AN EXAM CONTAINING THIS STUDY. IT WAS IN MA EXAM. U DONT UINDERSTAND HOW MANY ARGUEMENTS MY FRENDS (WHO ARE BLACK ) IM MY PSYCHOLOGY CLASS HAD TO ARGUE UPON WITH THE WHITE. KIDS.
