Hey people, I had my first Law exam today and it was on Public Law, not my favourite module. Anyway it didn't go too well, but I thank God for guiding me.
Anyway I thought I would just go on about the education system, I know we have all had to do exams in the past, indeed I have had my fair share of it from secondary schools to uni. But can they really be a accurate indicator of 'intelligence'? which I say sarcastically because it isn't really intelligence, in my eyes but perhaps memory, ability to put things you've learnt on paper coherently..etc. That is not to disrespect people that do good in exams, they deserve it, if you get what I mean.
Anyway just wanted to know your thoughts because next year my modules are 100% exams, and although I know my syllabus inside out it doesn't stop the nerves or writer's block when you enter the exam room. So in reality when I graduate, what will that be a indicator of?
The rant is over!!
Bless, CC

In all honesty i think that basically exams prove u can understand, memorise and rewrite stuff in your own words... i dont think they really 'prove' intelligence as such...when u cum out of uni then u will have an understanding of law at a basic level and then u will practice and ur knowledge will become deeper etc. Most business nowadays just look at what grade of degree you got not what it is in, with the exception of proffessions such as urself but u can still do a PGCE for teaching and sumthing similar for law....basically i agree... there annoying as hell but we gotta do them...and still they only prove that we can read, understand, memorise and rewrite... basically that we can parrot stuff...which in a way is an insult to our intelligence!
Good luck with your exams.

Agreed
But since memorising data for exams usually requires an effort of memory, preparation and some understanding of the material (applies more in sciences when they give you problems), that it shows how hard you worked at memorising the stuff. Hmm but then again not necessarily because many people scour past exam papers for examples of questions and memorise those as opposed to understanding how to tackle such problems...
I would say that it is more an indication of how hard you are prepared to work (even the menial recollection of data requires some work), how you handle pressure and can you work to a deadline for a long term objective.
That is my theory anyway.
Besides, can you think of a better way to split the better law (or other subject) students from the worse ones?
