Masks of Africa
I am the idea of their reality
Allusions in their imagination
Carved from ancient hands
From figment to visualization
As abyss as African eyes
Black and polished like African skin
Dignified, and elaborate, kin
Stare inside the deep grooves of my face and relive the past
I am carved, woven and sculpted from the finest gold cast
A medium between the living and dead
Fallen kings and tribes, are resurrected then I adorn the head
I summons powerful spirits through meditation and trances
Manifesting their presences through chants and dances
Receiving secrets, answers, healings and tradition
Possessing my wearers soul embracing cultural superstitions
Believe, believe, believe and you shall see
Initiations, rituals, cures, and religious ceremonies are my specialty
I bring fertility to the women of the village
Newly circumcised boys come face to face with their sexuality
I turn boys to men, men to kings, and kings to Deities
I am the centuries between the present and the ancient societies
The center of African mythologies
