son: father, why is being african so important?

father: to be african in africa is simple

to be african when you  leave the continent is more difficult

to remain african after powerful nations have raped you, burnt  you, mutilated, murdered you, stripped you of your names, languages and inherited cultures over generations

is a divine gift, that will enable you to do things impossible otherwise

son: like what father?

father: look out of the window, what do you see?

son: boys playing

father: what kind of boys?

son: black and white boys

father: where do the black boys call home?

son: england

father: where do the white boys call home?

son: they see anywhere in the world they can dominate through economics and military might as their home

father: where do the black boys say their ancestors come from?

son: they don't know and are not taught to ask such questions

father: where do your ancestors come from

son: the nile valley civilisations

but father, i still dont understand why beingafrican is so important,  for me though, i'm born in diaspora, the significance of identity and culture, still has not hit me

father: i know, but just like many things you have learnt slowly, the beauty and power of who you are, will one day dawn on you - and it is only then, that you will hear your  son ask you

father, why is being african so important?

father: on this day in 1834

the whiteman said "you are now free"

do you remember how our lives were when we were free?

son: yes, father

father: good

what is mental slavery son?

son: its when you cant remember or understand freedom

and dont struggle to know

father: good son,  its about  knowledge of self, your humanity.  this you get from understanding what your people have done

they tried and still try to take this away from us

for many this became a reality - their mind traumatised

which left a vacuum - a void, which our enemies exploit

they then teach us lies and call it truth

the criminals become the law and their victims become the criminals

world turned upside down

and we are not designed to walk on our heads

Son: Had to do battle with a boy at school; he disrespected me, said Africans have no history.  He told me his history teacher confirmed it for him.

Father: Go on.

Son: I ignored him - I thought, what a dumb Negro.  This made him lose himself completely.  The fool stabbed me with a compass.  That was his last aggressive action against me - I put him on his back, crushing him under my feet.  He screamed like a baby.

Father: So is this why the school want me to attend a meeting tomorrow?

Son: Yes Father.  The school are looking to suspend me.

Father: What about the other boy?

Son: He has been declared the victim

Father: OK! Lets fo and deal with the matter tomorrow.  You don't seem that upset,  can I ask why?

Son: I remember how our boys, back in Africa, fought against Men or wild animals, during our rites of passage.

Why should I be emotionally concerned with fools and their institutions?

The headmaster seemed pleased he had a reason to discipline me. Just like a leopard that fails to recognise the skills of a warrior: their ignorance makes them insignificant to the focused African.  A group,  I count myself a proud member of.

Father: Hmmm..........
