TRIBAL
Well it's a quarter to midnight
the moon is high
the tribe gathers where the river meets the sky
warriors arriving for the victory feast
cuz they tracked down the enemy
and killed the beast
now the drums of dance become the drums of war
and the drums pound like u never heard the drums before
funkin' is mandatory, u can't fake it
it's a tribal tradition
u can't break it
if u wanna be down wit the tribe
u gotta take it
to the max, in fact relax,
cuz u can make it
power! in the drum and the bass
the 9th hour
staring us in the face
war!
is what the drums be sayin'
and all the devils we slayin,' yo
we ain't playin' yo
Rhythm of the tribe is a stone vibe
and I'm the scribe
so don't even try to bribe
stick it
like a postage stamp
lick it
like a two dollar tramp
the Golden Stool, the spear, the tool
we graduated from the warrior school
and at the stroke of midnight
start the ceremony
man and sky
in holy matrimony
Earth the mother was proud to give birth
to me and my brothers
and quench her thirst
she felt the agony, the labor pains
she cried out 'father please send the rains'
then the rains they came
lightning spelled our name
as it was in the beginning
today the same
Ashanti, Yoruba, here to make our stand
like the ancestors
back in the motherland
see, we dance for life
we dance for death
we tribal funkin' till we breathe our very last breath
Tribal funkin'
on the banks of the river
just ah skankin'
the tribe will deliver
see, we march for days through the deep deep jungle
and when we attack
u feel the whole earth rumble
so when u hear the drums
know it's the tribe on the move
so get into the groove
It's a question of who can go on for longer
the tribe will prevail becuz our magic is stronger
funkin' tribe
a funkin' nation
funkin' for the rebirth of a warrior nation
and this will be the anthem of the Hip-hop Nation
1991 Shariff Ashanti
