I think we need a philosophy forum where heads can knock and deep thoughts can be thought. I've seen other boards that have them and they seem to work well and get real deep and intresting.
What do you think?

| I agree...I don't think we foster African philosophy enough. The only thing is you have to make sure it does not bleed too much into what might go into the "Religion & Spirituality" forum since they are indeed types of philosophy. Philosophy encompasses much more than simply religion/spirituality, but often people only practically recognize religion or their mode of spirituality as their philosophy.

Doubt the mods would make one but its tough placing heavy topics such as De-Evolution in one room on here... I actually feel bad seeing my, '' ''heaven'' is ''hell'' and ''hell'' is ''heaven'' '' topic in the religion room with all those ultra religious peeps in there... its like bringing up the topic in church or something.

Is it me or are peoples sigs changing?
Blackchat needs to do some marketing man! Wheres the boss!? This forum should be up there with the sponcered links on all the search engines... up the cost of advertizing and mailouts! Get rid of the banana and go on a membership drive... even black professional needs a face lift.
Don't slack - keep it black!
That twice as nice advert has been on here for a good year or so now I'm sure.

I wouldn't mind a philosophy forum as long as the topics are geared towards African philosophy. We would also have to make sure that the topics don't get too far into religion and actually tap into other issues like the self, African epistemology, the concept of truth...this could be fun. Oh, we could also talk about trends in African philosophy and have debates on whether ethnophilosophy is a vaild philosophy or not. And if African philosophy should be based more on nationalistic-ideological philosophy, as established by Fanon, Nkrumah and the like, or philosophic sagacity in which we look at the works of sages and griots.
If this is the direction you plan to gear this forum towards then count me in. If not, then forget it. I've had enough of Western and Eastern philosophy. I'm not saying that we can't talk about them in the forum but I would want the main focus to be on our own philosophy.

I wouldn't mind a philosophy forum as long as the topics are geared towards African philosophy.
But we are African and draw our own conclusions so whats learnt then becomes African philosophy.
Man, what a cool subject, I might even take up a course this year thinking about it. Never thought about studying it... if you can come up with a good enough reason for not doing course work would they let you off? I mean if you proper go into it,

When I was in school, I must say that I typically hated Philosophy class. They are usually based on European philosophy and will tell you that philosophy began about 500 BCE with the Greeks. I got in an argument with my philosophy professor about that, where I argued that the Black civilizations of Sumer, Indus Valley, original Chinese Dynasties, Olmecs, ancient Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and of course Egypt had religion (which is a subset of philosophy) therefore had a philosophy hundreds and thousands of years before the Greeks. He basically told me that the Egyptians and everyone else I named didn't "really know what they were doing" until the Indo-European caught up with the rest of the world. We went back and forth for a good 5 or 10 minutes, but then I decided to just shut up because I couldn't win anyhow. I needed the class to graduate and was not about to let this ignorant educated fool take that from me.
Anyhow, I would hope that we would explore more African philosophies, because if you buy most philosophy books you will get the white perspective.

I know what you mean with western philosophy. but i was a little lucky because both my lecturers were not only ethists but Socialist and communist respectively. So they spent more time dissing the Western philosophers than doing any teaching. lol
Primarily we did Political sciences, Philosophy of Religion(which i think you would have loved because as you would be aware, majority of white philosophers are ethists anyways, so they did more dissing against their own institutions..lol)
We also looked at different ways people bring in arguments....eg: Falacious arguments etc.
We never did touch on any African philosophies, but we did a lot of Chinese, which really made the western philosophers look like babies.
Overall i think Philosophy for me should be made compulsory for students....even if you hate it, at the end of the day it does give you a sense of self to question the status quo, well at least for me it did help anyways.

From my experience you get the white perspective talking to anyone in the west black or otherwise.

A suggestion as there is a bit of a debate about the remit of this new forum, can i suggest that you the membership SET the parameters for the NEW forum and the Moderation team will obviously enforce it...(idea's within reason that is)..
Btw...We are still short of the magic number to get this forum off the ground....the magic number being 20....

I agree. Which is why I said only if members WILL use it. Members need to be active in these forums, it isnt for the mods to always (if at all) ''set tasks'' if you like.
K is it possivble to create a mini forum within a forum? i.e placing the philosophy within the religion/spirituality, but still having it's own little space?
