Mayor delivers free Tube and DLR travel for under-11s

From 1 April, half a million London children under the age of 11 can now travel free all day every day on the Tube and Docklands Light Railway when accompanied by an adult passenger with a valid ticket.

This extends the promise delivered last April that saw free off-peak travel for under-11s, and is part of the Mayor’s plans to improve young people’s access to education, sport and leisure services throughout London.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: “We are continuing to bear down on the cost of travel for London’s families, and the extension of free travel on the tube and DLR to all day every day is another big step in reducing the pressures on Londoners’ pockets.

“Combined with free bus and tram travel for all under-18s in full-time education this new step means that London has one of the most extensive cut-price travel schemes for families with children anywhere in Europe.

banana.gifI tell you kids today dont know how lucky they be...when I was younger had I been able to travel free I would not have spent time in front of the judge for evading my fares:)

Don't mean sh*t to me!

Don't allow my child to travel anywhere on his own apart from to school, and I have to pay for that because he takes the tube!

I actually think its a bad idea making kids travel for free,  Its easier for them to bunk off if they can just jump on a bus and travel across London for nothing.

Oh yes.. they can only travel free id accompanied by a paying adult. However, I do feel it is a good idea... I do understand your point re: truancy, but this is a role for our friendly Community officers.
