The 'Most Outstanding Parent of the Year' shares her secrets (click for more)

It takes a woman with incredible grit and substance to rear nine children under normal circumstances. But when home happens to be a tough inner-city community like Kingston's Southside, it takes a woman with the heart of a warrior, and 39-year-old Althea Beverly is all that and more.

I'm a bit confused here.... She's the 'most outstanding parent of the year' because:- She makes sure her children do their homework to a decent standard?
- She attends parent's meetings at the school?
- She give her children chores to do at home?
- She has high ambitions for her children?
Surely these are what any responsible parent should be performing as a norm, regardless of economic background. Is this a sad example of black people giving someone extra credit for something she should be doing anyway?
Yes, she has given birth to five children, but in that whole back-slapping article, do you see the word 'father' mentioned even once? Where is he (or they)?
Sorry, but a reality check is needed.....

Lovedaddy, don't be such an arse. Maybe the father was absent from reports because he absented himself from his position of head of house.
And BTW, everyone needs role models and "the norm" as you put it must be proselytised in certain contexts.
Well done, mama Africa. Your children will continue your dedication, standards and sacrifice in the rearing of their own children.

But why is she outstanding? She is standard. I agree with Love daddy..that should be standard.
1) She gives them cores. Standard. 2) They do homework. Standard.
3) Parent evening. Standard. 4) She budgets for the household food. Standard.
5) She has a slow child who she helps. Commendable. But standard given the circumstances. 6) She just lately stop cuss bad word to her children. Given that she has 9 children its not heartnening to know she was bloodclarting--and bumba clarting up the place. Ok she stop. Pat her on the back? But "Outstanding parent of the year"
They are having a laugh. But the Observer and the Gleaner have a patronising position towards poor people full stop in Jamaica. Its almost like the article was taking the piss.
Im sure there are scores and grosses more worthy parents in her locality that are more deserving of the title.
