Okay, doesn’t matter if you have kids of your own, most of us are uncles and aunts.. what do you do or can you do to educate them (kids of today) about the dangers of this world… guns, drugs and naughty adults..?

Look around you, would you say that we are? It will never be enough, just try and give it your best shot.

Why would I want to do that?

Too many parents do that as it is, hence the hideous increase in the amount of phobias that people have about the world.

Making children miserable isn't something I'd feel good about.

Children who don't know about drugs at all are less likely to take them, and most importantly even want to take them.

If they are aware of drugs and their dangers at a young age, then when faced with the opportunity to take them then the dual nature of the person will often kick in, the side that makes the bad seem exciting.

There is a line between being informed, and paranoia.  We have already crossed the line over into paranoia.  I remember growing up, if you got in trouble at school, you might get spanked or a stern scolding by your neighbors, people working in stores, aunts and uncles before you even got home to face your mother or father.  You may have gotten beat 3 or 4 times before your parents got to you.  The community was far more cohesive when my parents were in their youth. Yet, we keep submersing ourselves deeper into the psychological thought of the West, while warning our children about its ills at the same time.  Does this not seem hypocritical?  In the process, we lose a part of the African family and community.

ef MAX,

When it comes to my nephews, I try to be as sensitve, but realistic about the real world. For exaple(s) when wetalk about race/racism, I'll tell them " You're considered to be African-American because of the laws and that youskin tone, hair and Genetics make you as such a person. I also tell them that the world is two fold: Some people are going to like you for you and others are not.

Far as the violence they see, I tell them that they would isn't perfect and that everything isn't going to be a utopia for them, but it doesn't mean that they can find good in the midst of confusion.. I think about how my cousin raise her boys. She does her best to shield them away from the problems of our society while I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, it's not totally a great thing to do. I only shield my nephews to a point, but the rest I cannot help. I notice that with my little cousin, they are just as naive and aren't used to things. They don't know what to do. My nephews on the other had has been aroun it, noit because I wanted them to be in it. Sometimes the problems comes to you. Unfortunately, they have witnessed two men whipping the crap out of each other, seen a guy try to pull a bottle top scam( If you ever visit Atlanta and you see this man doing this BEWARE!! he's a scam artist and has been doing  itsince I was a kid.People have lost tons of money because of him)they have been exposed to home lass people and unruly people. Though I much would prefer them not seeing that, they had no choice, but at the same time such stuff may make them aware of their society, more street wise andhow to deal with. I felt bad for my little cousins because they didn't even know that homeless people existed in the world. That's sad!
