I agree 100%! I think that islamic names or at least names that hail from the mid-east or north africa region are pleasing to the ear, when spoken and pleasing to the eye , when written. That's probably the reason that some of my black american bretheren give their children such names. Of course, some do so because they're recent converts to islam, but most do so because they like the sound of them.

I agree with all of you that a name with meaning is better than one with none. However, having the same name as one of the Bronte sisters (and hating it through school as everyone else was named Michelle or Angela), I am glad that I have a conventional name as you are not behind before you even start.

A study has actually been done on this:

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3495/is_2_48/ai_97873146

I guess I am throwing a spanner in the works right now but no matter how deep and meaningful the name we want to give our children is, when it comes to interview for PriceWaterhouseCoopers or a big law firm like Linklaters or Lovells, do you think they will select Mercedes and Marvellous or Joanna and Alison to go through to the next stage...they say they wouldn't but be bias but... :?

I would definately love to give a child of mine a good strong East African name but I would be tempted to make it their second or third name and stick to something conventional, but with meaning. Having said that, I love the names Sade, Asmara, Samalie or Sanyu for girls....

It'll be interesting to see if my little theory about names works though as my sister was given a good East African name as her first name so I guess my parents must have had a 'conscious' moment!

My son was born in January. I did not choose his name until after he was born. I named him Jacob Williamclp). I don't know why. I like it because it is proper and plain. My sisters and brothers and I all have made-up names and I wanted to be a little different. I also named my sister Asireya and my brother Zaireon (I didn't choose the spelling for his name which is pronounced Za-ron). My son's father wanted me to name my son after his which is NOT an option. We want a little girl eventually. I might go with something more original for her. I do tend to like unisex names for girls. Some names I like are...

Kadence, Camden, Kaminari, Kennsington, Kennedy, Chanel, Natalia, Giovanna, Jersey, Kailan, Kiell, Arden, Siobhan and Haven among others. Chances are though, her father will insist upon naming her.

If I have another or more sons, I may continue with Biblical names. I may go with Matthew or Benjamin. I also like the names Jackson, Cohen, heck I don't know. Boys are hard to name!

By the way, for the entire first half of my pregnancy I was going to name my son Keouris Kyree. I made it up and I love the way it rolls off my tongue but I was afraid it wasn't boyish enough. Maybe I'll name my daughter that! I took alot of flack for the name and people saying it was "ghetto" and he'd have a hard time with it. His father tried to convince me to name him Jihad or Wilding (like "wilding out" pronounced "Wylan"). Ooof that man.

My son has the names Oluwasegun (after his father) and Oluwabamidele (can't remember the meaning), Michael and Joseph (after my dead father (RIP) and my stepfather. He has a strong Hebrew, biblical first name that really suits him.

I suppose we really should be thinking of names now.....
