offtopic.gifY do Nigerian children have a lot of names? My bf is nigerian and I know other Nigerian ppl also&they all have more than 3 names!! Is that usual or unusual?

I agree with you on the names with meanings, i would prefer to have a name that meant something special, or the child to be named after someone special.

It is not just nigeria, i have 5 names including my surname!!

my friend at school had a Spanish mother and a Gambian father and her name was a mixture of both countries  and she had 6 names!!!

Wow, the poor child. Imagine having to learn to remember all of those AND spell them @ the age of 2/3. :)

I LOVE names with meaning&all my children will have names with meaning I WANT my children to have 3/4 names (including the surname).

is ur bro's name really blaze?!  Does he like it, and does it get a good reaction, because i really wanna call my son Blaze.  also, is it spelt BLAZE or BLAIZE.

also @ Iyallah, i love the name Blaque!!  its really pretty!!

It's spelt Blaze.  I'm not with him every day so I'm not the best person to ask but ppl dont reall say much about his name. I'm sure ppl do complimnent him sometimes.

To join in with the rest of you - I have 5 names. First, 2 middle and a double barreled surname! Bit of a mouthfull!!! The names are quite long too so it takes ages to write the whole thing!! 34 letters all together! I remember trying to learn how to spell them all as a child!

Saddam sounds good as a boy's name smoking-devil, the way the Iraqi's chant Saddam! Saddam!! ^%*)%$)() Saddam!!!, sounds like a catchy chorus niceone.gif

Yoruba girl's names:

Jadesola [ JAH-DAY-SAW-LAH] meaning:  Emerge into wealth.                          Olubunmi [ OH-LOO-BOON-ME] meaning: God bestowed upon me.              Omosalewa [ OR-MORE-SHAH-LAY-WAH] meaning: Child chose to come to this home.

Yoruba boy's names:

Adebayo [ AH-DAY-BAR-YOR] meaning: One who arrives to meet joy.             Olusegun [ OH-LOO-SHARE-GOON] meaning: God is victorious.                        Adewale [ AH-DAY-WAH-LAY] meaning: One who arrives home.

Other girls names:

Efe, Onos, Ibiwari, Alero etc. These names come from the people's of the Niger delta area, ie the Urhobos, Ijaws, Itsekiris etc. I don't know their meanings since I don't speak the languages.

Nkechi, Ngozi, Obiageli, Amaka, Onyebuchi: are all Igbo ( Ibo ) girls' names. Since I don't speak Igbo, I can't tell the meanings either.

Halima, Zainobe. Hauwa are girls names from northern Nigeria, common among the Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri peoples.

Amber,

I was on my way back from my mother's hometown when I came across the name of a small quiet town in Georgia that intrigued me--Shenandoah( pronounced, Shin-nan-do-ah). I know that this name is Native American. I've mentioned some other Native American name on a prior posts that I like Cheyenne.

I was also looking at the Former Miss Universe--Dayanara Torres.I kind  of like that name as well. I'm not sure if Dayanara is a Latina name or somebody else's name and then there was a name of the first name of my former professor, Soraya. I'm going to assume that this name is Iranian/Iraqi because I've seen some Middle eastern women named this.

I like the name Jordan whether it's a boy/girl. I also like Dakota as well.

Blackbeauty,

I too like Osama and nobody should feel bad to name their kid that if they want to because of who Osama bin Laden is. There is more than one Osama in his part of the world( the Middle east)

Amber,

Ooops! there was also one more name that I like--Samia. I'm not sure if it's an African name or not, but I know that was one African( not sure what part of African her was from) man named his daughter.

Well, when it came to naming my daughter, there was only one true name to give her. At the time that I was pregnant. As a woman I was very uncertain about a lot of things in my life.

I had a lot of friends, or knew a lot of women who were so desperate to have children and for what ever reasons they couldn't. I decided, that because I was blessed to have a child. I would name her

Heaven

She's definately a gift from God. All children are. When people ask me her name, they are astonished and always ask a second time. I always laugh and say. "You know, where God lives?" And they always say how beautiful her name is. Its becoming more common now. But when I first had her, it was unheard of. Even my mother was shocked Id name her that. But she is just that to me... Pure Heaven

@MBD, Salewa is also one of my most favourite girl's names, along with Omowunmi( Wunmi ) for short. I also like, Bolanle, Abolade, Bolajoko, Bolarinwa, Abosede etc. Then the really old school Yoruba names like: Apinke, Amoke, Fadeke etc are just divine!

ciao
