East what is so funny?
Ladyday it isn't a case of you 'hope you will balance it out' You wil just have to. Remember with children it is not quantity but quality that counts.
BTW
Congrats

@ LD - you will do just fine!
It was hard for me, but then I realised it was ok to change the game plan, and then it became easier.
So in otherwords, be flexible. Handle as much as you can handle, and don't be afraid to say "no" or to take a "timeout" if you need it! And remember most of all Motherhood is not about perfection.
Best of luck!!

@LadyDay: We always make it through. I found that I had a stronger commitment to my family than my job and although it was very tough once I had to go back more so when I needed to reduce my hours but I waited and found myself like Happiness says becoming a lot more flexible but had to do it my way.
Keep your head up sister you have one of the most powerful positions in the world...not only are you now a giver of life you are indigenous and you are a Goddess. Never forget that

So we need to change the economic system so we don't have to spend so much time working. We should have been on a 3 day work week 20 years ago.
Nah, I gotta work so I can buy an iPod.

LadyDay,
Taken from the ACAS website: http://www.acas.org.uk
Do employees have the right to work flexibly?
Parents of children under the age of six or disabled children under the age of eighteen have the right to apply to their employer to work more flexibly. The request can cover hours of work, times of work and place of work and may include requests for different patterns of work.
The request must be made in writing and the employer has a statutory duty to consider the request seriously and to refuse it only if there are clear business grounds for doing so. Employees making applications for flexible working have the right to be accompanied at meeting by a fellow employee.
Don't let the b**tards get you down.

i have a result
they have basically said its the dept refuse to budge but hr have asked different dept that wherei match the skill set if they can offer me the working hours. as they wouldnt want to have an effect on my family life. so basically i can join a different dept doing a similar role.
i think i will go for it. give it a go and see, especially since i am still in training
phew

@LadyDay: Couldn't agree more with Lady Vee. When I asked direct they started to give me a load of BS about why I couldn't reduce and me like a chump gave in and worked full time for quite a while until my second child came. Trying to keep up the full time and parenting was so hard but somehow I did it. I had to apply using the dti form for them to take me seriously when I did need to reduce my hours and I reminded them that they had to take me seriously too. I gave them a break down of my proposal, how the team would function without me leading them and how much they would even save by giving me part time.
All of a sudden they had my manager the personnel manager and one of the seniors up in discussion. I got my part time. Result! It came at a cost though. My manager switched, the battles started and so confirmed my determination to leave that blasted place.
It's good that you have the chance to move in another area but one thing I found useful was thinking again about working for myself. The more you can make things work for you the better. I'm not saying things will get bad for you at work but your priorities change. You don't only have work at the fore front of your mind now and that's what they find hard to swallow. It doesn't mean you are incapable as they would have you believe in fact it makes you more equipped to manage your life because the ony one who can really make the balance is you. Are you back at work now or just in talk about what you will do?
