Its a known fact that the number of women choosing to have caesareans continues to rise and is well above recommended levels... according to figures released recently
And teh drama does not end there; number undergoing emergency caesareans has also risen slightly, combining with elective procedures to mean that more than one fifth of women are having a major operation to give birth.

Are women really too posh to push - or are doctors encouraging more caesarean births to avoid possible legal action?

And see the full NHS statistics:

cesarians are glamourised too much in the media. a cesarian birth takes far longer to recover from than a natural birth.

i was watching a show and they told this woman baby needs to be cut out the baby came out before the ambulance came.

cesarian should only be an option of a health risk occurs

blkclap I had to stay in for a whole extra week with staples still in, breast feeding and all. The burning and ripping sensation is unbearable. The second or third day in they were plucking  them out. (Sheer pain I tell you.) I now have a permanent scar that constantly itches. (but she's worth it!)

blkclapblkclapI had to do this because 1) I was a week over due. 2) I did not have a good amount of fluids and her heart rate was slowing down.

But trust me, If I were able to push her out I would have very well done so. Not that I was looking for a painless way out. I'm more then willing to take any type of pain for my sugar plum mum.

In my mind I see it as wrong if a women has a c-section only to avoid pain, selfish more like. what blows are you willing to take on behalf of your child in the future  if you can't bare the pain of labor?

My sister recently gave birth to her baby and I dont understand why someone would opt for an unnatural process rather than the NATURAL process. Coming through the correct passage isnt just for convenience, it is actually far better for the baby. Coming through the vaginal passage the baby goes through a few processes which are good for him or her-such as squeezing most of the liquid out of the babies lungs as it enters the world.

Obviously if a woman has to have a caesarean because of health reasons then by all means...

Damn Coltrane, did you lead a sheltered life??

Nookie = Sex

Now, back on topic, I wouldn't advocate c-section simply for the child to be born on a certain day (I heard Posh Spice had them so as not to interfere with David's football schedule) but, as in the case of Chloe, if it's for the safety of the mother and child then do it.

I fully intended to have my son naturally, but after 10 hours of labor he still didn't drop down and his little heart rate had elevated too high so I had no choice, I had to have a c-section. It did take me a while to heal up but I was glad that my doctor stiched me up with dissolveable stiches insted of the staples.

I know many of women who had caecarean births and most didn't have it because of choice.  They were not thinking about their vagina being stretched out or were to "poosh" or any of that.  Most of the women I know didn't really choice because the doctor made it seem like you had to have it or your kid might die or have brain damage.  My bestfriend was told she had to have a c section being the ambilical was wrapped around the kids neck and could have suffocated.  My god mother should have had a c section because when her daughter was born, she couldn't breath and came out retarded and having seizures so caesareans aren't really that bad and can save some babies lives.  But you will have a permanent little belly thats almost imossible to get rid of without surgery even if you work out.

Too posh to push????

unless I am completely mistaken, I do not believe that a woman can "opt" for a C-Section on the basis of cosmetic reasons. Thats just a ridiculous notion and does a disservice to women everywhere.

At the end of the day, the call for a C-Section is that of the medical staff and they may opt for it more today than in the past, to avoid law suits

Here are the reasons why women do not "choose" C-sections for cosmetic reasons:

1) it is about 3-4 times the cost of natural delivery.

2) there is a higer risk of infection and other risks that is associated  with any major surgery

3) Recovery time is 2 weeks....compared to 12-24 hours of natural delivery.

4) your stomache will never be the same again - particulary the area around the incision. Black women especially are prone to thick scar tissue (cant remember what its called) - which requires plastic surgery to remove.

5) Once you have gone "C"....you can never go "V"

@ Coltrane - please treat us like we are half-way intelligent

@Happiness,it is called Keloids the scarring effect that black people are more prone to.

If you have a natural birth your vagina is suppose to go back to normal after 6 weeks ( this is what I read) if not kegel exercises work a treat!!

It's wierd I rarely visit this board.

I have had all four of my children by C-section and to be honest I can't really talk about natural births.

First as someone already pointed out women unless they go private don't get a choice to have or not a section, the decision lies with the medics for the reasons already provided.

My first section was an  emergency my first born was to big to pass through my pelvis @ 8'11.(personally I am glad I never had to push him out)  Given he was born in the late 70's I thought I'd had the section because it was becoming quite common place for hospitals to opt to do them, it wasn't untill my second son some 6yrs later I realised that it was about my size, although he was smaller than my first @ 7'4 it was still another emergency section.

By my third child some 10yrs later it was agreed that I was to have a section, although  credit to my consultant who did test to check if I could deliever naturally, which was what I wanted. However an elected section is a better option than an emergency section. I was able to choose the day, and date, alas not the time.

Recovery time after a C-section is I believe down to the individual. When I had my first 26yrs ago you stayed in hospital for 10 days. This was agony for me since within two days apart from a little discomfort I was fine and able to walk around use stairs, do exercises. I admit I was young and strong.

By my second child the impact of Thatcherism was being felt within the NHS and I was actively encouraged to leave hospital ASAP I was out within 5 days and if I had not got an infection which I tried to mask with cold showers just before my temperature was taken I would have been out in 4days.

By my third child, despite my age, my recovery was just as quick and I was out of hosp within 2 days. Actively encouraged by the medics since bed space was limited.

However what I did notice with my third child was that it took far longer for them to cut me open and stitch me back up again due to scar tissue being tougher.

Scar tissue also impacted on my fourth child, when after the birth of my 3rd the scar had attached and healed with my bladder, so when they cut me open again they also cut into my bladder, resulting in my being cathaterized for a week or so.

This meant I had to stay in hospital for longer, however after a few days of listening to some whinging by first time mothers and lack of sleep from their forever crying babies I had to argue that I would be fine going home with the catheter and could deal with it as I was a care worker, so they eventually and reluctantly  let me go home 4 days after the birth, with my little piss bag attached :) I have to say it  was an older Black head nurse that took my corner in my argument that I'd be better off at home. If it wasn't for her I would probably be doing life for killing that irritating whinging woman in the bed next to me and her crying kid (the woman had a natural birth and managed to stay in hosp for over a week, she was still there when I left.)

I do feel I missed out somehow not giving birth naturally, but at the same time I experienced the pain of labour in my first two pregnancies and I'm not sure I could have coped with the pain of delievery. But then I often think I would never have gone on to have more children if I had.

I remember at the birth of my sisters first child I was holding her hand while in labour and crying-feeling her pain, when a nurse who knew I had sections turned around and said "I don't know why your crying, you took the easy way out"

I think if I had a choice I would have gone natural and I would have loved  to try an home birth, despite the pain. (and the stretched out cookie);)

As for the scar, they are usually bikini cuts, as mine is,  although many hospitals after more than one section will cut in a different direction which if I had gone on to have more children would have been the case. The scar from a section is nothing compared to the scaring from stretch marks, trust me.

Sorry off the topic a little..........

I was prepared to have a vaginal birth but baby's heart rate began to drop and had an emergency c-sect.....I would of preferred a vaginal birth.....now when hubby and I do-the-do it hurts so bad because I am soooo tight....i needed a lil stretching a bit.....LOL. I have always been real tight, I automatically thought having a vaginal birth would loosen me up a bit. (sorry tmi)

C-section recovery was the most horrid pain I have ever felt....worst than actual labor......I will not have any more children b/c I am afraid of the c-section again.
