What do you think of this show? Personally I believe it is the best black show since the Cosby's about a black family. Also what are you favourite black comedy shows period ie. Desmonds, the Real Mcoy, the Cosby show.........

@ Canon

"My wife and Kids" is a good positive show. There is a wonderful profile of it and star Damon Wayans in one of the current issues of "Essence" Magazine...I think November's edition.

Here are my personal favs...

"Sanford & Son"....the comedic brilliance of the late Redd Foxx is what makes this a classic ground-breaking series. We've lost many of it's other stars including Whitman Mayo who played Grady his best friend and LaWanda Page who passed about a year or so ago who played perfectly the role of "Aunt Esther"....just watching her and Fred go at it was worth it. It was a highly rated show for NBC...during the 70's.

"Good Times"...aside from the foolishness of the character JJ, this show highlighted a loving family of color with a strong father figure in the amazing John Amos who played James Evans Sr. The late Esther Rolle won an emmy for her wonderful portrayal of matriarch Florida Evans...one of her most memorable performances from this sitcom was after the funeral for her husband James, she broke-down and uttered the infamous line "damn!, damn!, damn! Brings tears to my eyes even to this day.

"The Cosby Show"...it took a concept we hardly saw on television before and worked it all the way to number one...and that concept was two successful parents of color..a doctor and a lawyer who didn't live in the ghetto, raising their kids without the clowning, and the shucking and jiving, etc...that you saw in many of its predecessors. This show made a big statement and had a huge impact in terms of how we are viewed.

"The Jefferson"...This series ran for a very long time on CBS and in its heyday was ranked at or near the top for the network. It was a spin-off of "All In the Family" and featured the equivalent of Archie Bunker...a bigot of Color named George Jefferson played by the wonderful Sherman Hemsley. I chose to see the positiveness in this show because George was a self-made millionaire who at the core loved his family and did what he thought was right to protect it. For those who are not familiar with what we call "the Dozens' here in the states...you got a dose of it each week, when he and his maid Florence played by the talented Marla Gibbs insulted one another on just about every episode. Two memorable episodes stand out for me, the one in which they learned MLK had been assassinated and the fall-out from that and when George learned a painful lesson at a KKK meeting he mistakenly attended when one of the members whose life he saved said he would have preferred to die if he had known that a black man had saved his life. It was a good show because George realized that although he was successful, the perception of him wasn't gonna change in some people's eyes.
niceone.gif

There are other favorites but I would be here all day, LOL!:D

Canon:

I like it because all the women in the show are fine as hell...including the little girl (hold on now....I ain't Michael Jackson).

niceone.gifBrutha Damon sure knows how to pic his co-stars.

I just wish they had a few fine dark sistaz on there to even things out like the Cosby Show used to have.   All his women were fine too...especialy Phylicia.

They need to show the FULL specturm of sistaz...na'mean?

But comedian or not, is it me or does Damon Wayans seem to be one mean mutha.....?

Ashanti:

I'm with you...I think Sandford & Son had to be the best sit-com to ever have graced the tube.

blkafroThe name is Fred G. Sanford.
The "G" is for gimme gimme gimme...I'm gone!

But my next favorite show would have to be In Living Color (before they let all the white actors in and ruined it).

The funniest was that character Damon used to play with that Kente-cloth hat on.

Remember they used to show him up-close sounding all educated and articulate using big words but making absolutely no sense...then as the camera widens you see him either sitting behind bars in jail or pushing a mop at McDonalds!

I got them on tape!

@MB

I often catch Sanford and Son on TV Land/Nick at Night and it is as funny today as it was when it originally ran. Redd Foxx was a genius...he had perfect timing and delivery, you could see his ability to adlib in a scene...this guy was the real deal...how sad and ironic that he would die of a heart attack, the same ailment he would feign on the series.

Like you I loved In Living Color and yes remember quite well that bit Damon used to perform, that was a favorite as well as the gay film critic bit he did with David Allan Grier as well as Homie D. Clown, absolutely hysterical.

I use to love it@ lady,, but the fringe charcters just arent good enough and teh acting follows too much of a pattern. Junior messes up, michael makes him look stupid x 10. Still makes me laugh and the episode where he renewed his vows was one of the best episodes ever, on any show. I liked it that much, especially when she was crying and saying how she still crazy about him. Beautiful!!!

My Number 1 show is still Fresh Prince though. Love that!!!

Vanessa's parents, Franklin

I like to watch my wife and kids. But I think its a show thats a walking advertisement for the miseducation of the black race. Why? Because its a black show where all three of the kids that aren't portrayed as fools are biracial. and where two black girls have been replace by biracial girls. Example the first Claire was a dark skin black girl, all of sudden she was replaced by a biracial girl. The son's baby mother/girlfriend was ooriginally a black girl she was replaced by a biracial girl. Katy the youngest is biracial. Franklin the talented little pianist that is portrayed as a genius is biracial. The only fully black young person is junior and he is portrayed as stupid, worthless and a fool. It begs the question have we be so media conditioned that we can not show black children in a show as intelligent bright and skilled. Do we always think that using a half white person will mean they come across better.  In reverse the show All of Us does use a black child in a positive role. But Wife and Kids is f**ked up and just think it is ony one of a very few number of shows that caters for us.

No I'm with you 100%!niceone.gif

Blacklikeme above summed up my opinion on this bull crap!!

I think its disturbing that to my knowledge (US posters please correct me if I'm wrong!) ALL the black/predominantly black US TV shows are comedies.

Sitcoms by nature have a level of foolishness/unreality by the very fact they have to create laughs every few minutes, its worrying the only time you can see many blacks on screen in the US is either being funny or bare chested on COPS.

I dont like seeing Jnr get slapped on the head and belittled and demeaned so much, it grates me.

Fresh Prince, Jeffersons, Hanging with Mr Cooper, My Wife and Kids fell into a clown buffoon trap that Cosby, One on One, all of us avoided.

Why is it that on many black comedies there is a level of unrealistic slapstick/buffonery  that you simply dont see on Friends, Fraiser Seinfeld etc.

Dancin in September protrayed this expertly as did Bamboozled.

This is not to say we have it any better in Britain (dont mention the Crouches!!!) but I'd rather see no blacks if this complexionist buffonery is the best thats on offer.

I have mixed feelings about this show.:? I like it,but some things I don't like. They make Junior more stupid every show...:P

And they replaced the older sister with a light-skinned girl. Hey call me paranoid but I think they could've casted someone the same skin tone as the original "Claire". I have a problem with these TV shows replacing actors with lighter skinned ppl. it happens all the time. But other than that I like it.

Personally I think that blacks, as a people, always give ourselves a hard time or are extremely extra critical of what 'black product' is on TV, because 1) When we finally see ourselves on Tv it it has to be made worth our while LOL and 2) We are well aware of the fact, that whenever blacks are 'ANYWHERE' TV or in public we are representing our race, whether we like it or not. A very ugly pressure that is put on us from the day we are born, so much so , that many even forget it is there or/ and blank it out and just automatically do everything 'extra-perfect' and impose the same 'control-freakish' attitude on every other black around them, and just get used to being subject to scrutiny 24/7. I use control freak, because of how I have seen some people act, this is not necessarily the way every black acts. But anyway, even though people say it's buffoonery I like it ....it's so funny. Y'know...funny for the sake of being funny...like a real-life Simpsons. ......... .......... ............ ................ .............. ....... .............. .......... .......... ........... ........ .......... .......... ......... .............. .......... ........... ......... My favorite episodes: All the ones that involve the 'cunning' parents of junior's baby mother... the part where they dash off out the restaurant so that Michael and Jay will have to pay... which is even more funny ,coz of the way that Jay was, a few seconds before , protesting that the other couple pay. "Nuh uh, uh, mmm, mmm, mmmuh, let them pay for dinna , nuh, uh ,uhhhh"!LOL. And then when the baby mother's parents are making this big unecessary list of what they'll need when the baby is born, thinking they are tricking Jay and co, who set them up...I love the funny dances they do leading up to saying 'No', I love the 'monkey knuckle'. ........ ............ ................ .............. ....... .............. .......... .......... ........... ........ .......... .......... ......... .............. .......... ........... ......... The episode where Michael took that 'hair grow'' potion and became really paranoid was just crazy! LOL. Especially at it's longest...the way it grew on his head was hilarious! Franklin is cute.... and the way he adores katie, who in turn can make him do anything she wants! LOL. "Anywhooooooooooo"....LOL. The one where katie licks on the chocolate so that she doesn't have to share it, so Michael takes off the wrapper and coughs on the rest of it. LOL.LOL . The way they are mean to their kids is funny! The one with Vivica fox is good too. It's only comedy! Junior is sooooo funny...sweet. The one where Jay get's fat is funny and Michael is trying to be nice about it. It's good. Just laughs! niceone.gif

But Wife and Kids is f**ked up and just think it is ony one of a very few number of shows that caters for us.        you have got it spot on, I too have a problem with all the women being mixedrace. what ever happen to balance, damon must have some issue.

......... don't you notice how as soon as they changed the dark skinned claire (who had an attitude problem) to the biracial one, all of a sudden the "claire" character became and airhead.

they wanted to sexualise the daughter@ chi

They cut her off cos she was skinny and unsexy and replaced her witha  girl with curves.

Jennifer Freeman cant play the attitude role, sameway Jazz Recole couldnt play the bubbly role

.....but they actually made the character ditsy, vein, dumb, shallow etc the old claire was never that way...............I noticed that straight away.

Anyway, I still love the show, it's lighthearted fun.......but we need to give ourselves a break and stop pigeonholing black characters, it's the same even in some black fiction......the personality of the character can almost be predicted if you know how they are physically described.

Just my observation.

I agree that its meant to be light hearted, but to assume that some people don't take their life lessons from sitcoms is pure dellusion, especially sitcoms that stay away from over the top storylines,(unlike soaps like "eastenders" that over does itmso people can ignore it)

Its funny sometimes, but the belittling of junior is sometimes cringe worthy and its clear that all the wifes/daughters/sisters/mother-in-law are mixed race or look mixed race, now that does raise a bit of concern..

But it's the same with the men also...........all of them apart from the boy (not a man notice) Franklin, are dark skinned, and I mean ALL of them, even down to the "one off" parts.....have you not also noticed that?

Actually I did notice that, and I guess thats out of order too, but its not the fair skinned male thats being marginalized in the media so I figure thats why its not the main issue being raised, but the dark skinned female is clearly marginalized in comparison.... I also think black women in general have more of a scope of diversity to not only desire/lust after the shemars and boris' of the world, but truly love all blackmen ....

So in other words you've noticed, but it just doesn't matter, because they are not dark?

There are also shows where they have used dark skinned females ie, fresh prince (the only light skinned woman apart from the new wife was the airhead sister), bernie mac, both the step mother and the daughter are dark (no light skinned women at all), Girlfriends, the cosby's, Eve, Moesha, The parkers.........there are many if you actually sit down and look closely.................incidently none of these shows  (except fresh prince) have any light skinned males in it for any significant roles...................I have to disagree with you that light skinned men are not marginalised....they generally are when it comes to black TV and even black literature, they are always portrayed in a particular light.........the one not to be trusted, scheming, ladies man, weak etc.........there is a trend. The only thing is that they don't complain about it.
