THEY TAKE MY KINDNESS FOR . . . . . . . .WEAKNESS.
THEY TAKE MY SILENCE FOR . . . . . . . . SPEECHLESS.
THEY CONSIDER MY UNIQUENESS . . . . . . .STRANGE.
THEY CALL MY LANGUAGE . . . . . . . . . .SLANG.
THEY SEE MY CONFIDENCE AS . . . . . . . . CONCEIT.
THEY SEE MY MISTAKE AS . . . . . . . . . DEFEAT.
THEY CONSIDER MY SUCCESS . . . . . . . . ACCIDENTAL.
THEY MINIMIZE MY INTELLIGENCE TO . . . . POTENTIAL.
MY QUESTIONS MEAN I AM UNAWARE.
MY ADVANCEMENT IS SOMEHOW UNFAIR.
TO VOICE CONCERN IS DISCONTENTMENT.
IF I STAND UP FOR MYSELF, I AM TOO DEFENSIVE.
IF I DON'T TRUST THEM, I AM TOO APPREHENSIVE.
I AM DEFIANT IF I SEPARATE.
I AM FAKE IF I ASSIMILATE.
MY CHARACTER IS CONSTANTLY UNDER ATTACK.
PRIDE FOR MY RACE MAKES ME "TOO BLACK."

| No, I am not very talented when it comes to poetry, nor do know who the real author is. The person was simply a Pittsburgh local. It was from a session audio recorded in a jazz & poetry lounge one night in Pittsburgh some years back. I happened to listen to it again, so I decided to share.

Wasn't this read out by a poet/actress on a very old episode of Mohesha (sp). It sounds so familiar.

| I don't know....I don't watch much television. There's too much poison. Maybe the TV sitcom was reciting some poet...I doubt a sitcom writer would write a poem like this.

Well in the show Mohesha was a writer. But the poem wasn't read by her. She attended a poet's 'club' and another actress/poet read it. The poet was dressed in African gear and she read a militant poem, (very similar to the one you typed). In fact it inspired me to write my own lol.
I can't remember all the words because the show aired a long time ago.

| This is an excellent poem! More young African Americans need to here something like this. There is so much black hatred going on that many blacks need to find unity within. Poems like these are the ones that should have more recongnition. Thank you. For posting this poem.
