NOLLYWOOD, Nigeria’s home movie industry, may be in for difficult times as the Ghanaian government is said to have banned sale of such films in the neighbouring West Africa nation.

A Nigerian businessmen based in Ghana, Mr. Uche Okafor, involved in the distribution of Nollywood products in that country, told Daily Champion in Onitsha weekend, that Ghana is doing all, including outright seizure to discourage the sale of Nigerian home videos in that country.

According to him, they (distributors) in the past one month have been harassed at the border and major streets of Accra for bringing in and selling Nigerians films and videos in Ghana.

Okafor alleged that government agencies in Ghana are carrying out daily raids on markets even as officials of state told them that Nigerian films and videos have been banned in the country.

Chairman of Nigeria Film and Video Producers Association, Mr. Rob Emeka Eze, confirmed this, saying they have been receiving news of the development from their distributors in Ghana.

Eze said they have become handicapped and have been experiencing low sales since the development became glaring.

According to him, film producers have made necessary enquiries and discovered that the Ghanaian Government has not done anything to stop the raids.

"As at this moment, they have not given our distributors genuine reasons for their actions. Nigeria and Ghana have free trade relations, so I cannot understand," he said.

Eze, who is also chairman of Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA), said there were speculations earlier in the year that the Ghanaian government had plans to censor Nigerian films.

He said that Nigerian producers and marketers might have lost about N150 million in the last one month due to the development.

Eze said, however, they will storm Abuja soon, to consult with relevant authorities especially the Ministers of Tourism, Information and National Orientation, Foreign Affairs, Finance, The presidency and Ghana High Commission in Nigeria on the development.

..........at the end of the day our films are bigger and better you see them a the high street market folcking in large groups to watch our films.

Please, we're not jealous of these Naijas.  I'm sure that something else is up, I'll try to find out more about this.  Prehaps we banned their films because they're terrible.:D

Let them ban it if they want to.......they are the ones who will lose out, because Ghanaians love Naija videos even outside of Ghana........people from all over Africa buy our videos that will not stop our progress................where already on our way to the top, even the BBC is interested  .Let them watch their own slow films with no story line and bad acting if they wish but mark my words their people will soon backlash.....the way they love our videos.

It's a case of the green eyed monster!!!!!!!!

Oh that's HARSH, man!! LOL!!

I think I've only ever wathed one Ghanian film from beginning to end, and the quality was more or less the same as Nigerian films. To be honest though, what I hate about Naija films is that about 95% of them are to do with awon babalawo,  charms etc... as if our people don't know more than that. It's mainly Yoruba films but even the English-speaking films have a bit witchcraft in them

I wonder why they are banning these films.

What are Nigerian films typically about? The Chinese do martial art movies in the most/ what is a typical Nigerian film?

thats true but my bro, those kind of films are outdated nigeria now make films around the world some in the uk usa and these dont have anything to do with babalawo.i also insist we should base our films on the society and how it's seen.thats the only way it could be unique its already the world third largest in term of the movie industry if we are to copmete with hollywood and bollywood we should come out with things of our own and make them quality.we are not on hollywood evel to compete with them in terms of fiction or action movies so why direct all our focus there its good we pitch in every now and then but we should stick to our course.dont forget that most nigerian's and african's watch nollywood.this shows its effective reach.

@ Mansamusa - go and ask your Naija girl in the grocery store.....might be a good ice breaker!

seriously, the films are all the same: betrayal. juju power. consequences of betrayal.

I have notices that alot of the movies I watch, there is always a time gap. Y'know...fast forward to 20 years and see what has happened.

we watch them here because they remind us of Niaja - not cos they are really that good!

LOL, nigerian films or whatever are some funny sh*t. For one thing, you always hear this particular song playing constantly throughout the whole movie. And the front covers of the movies, HAHA! You basically see the face of every character of the movie.

One African movie i saw called ojuse. Based on some Kung Fu connoisseur who pathetically does kung fu on the "bad guys" (and they're actually serious). Come on, how the hell can you kill a guy by a sidekick. Now the bad guys, they're meant to be somekinda army militia when they seem more like backyard rambos shooting at them with bb guns. The sound effects had everyone in the room pissing themselves laughing. I LOVE IT!. because of it's cheapness

They better not ban these movies they kick ass

They were talking about doing this early last year; this is twofold one to encourage film making in Ghana (similar to the broadcast rule that the French have in place over foreign music and videos) also some Nigerian makers have been ripped off due to people illegally copying the films and selling them at a profit in other countries such as Ghana... while the film maker and actors lose out...

Of the revenue projections and estimations associated with the Nigerian movie industry, only about 13-15 per cent actually circulates within the production community in Nigeria.
Illegal import, export, copying, rental and other exploitation of movies have enriched opportunistic Nigerians and foreigners (an estimated $10m per month). These pirates feed on the absence of formal structures and support in Nigeria, which has almost destroyed this national treasure and enterprise.

Just got back from Ghana, sat morning TV3 show lots of Nigerian films as does Africa Magic... but some of this is a copyright issue too...

Posted Jan. 28, 2004

The determination of stakeholders in Ghana’s film industry to restrict the influx of foreign films, especially Nigerian films, may soon pay off. Following the resolve of the stakeholders, namely Film Producers Association of Ghana (FPAG), Film Distributors and Marketers Association of Ghana(FDMAG) and the Ghana Actors Guild (GAG) and the passing of the new copyright bill, importation, sale and exhibition of foreign works in general into the country is going to be strictly monitored.

At a forum organised last December by the GAG to find solutions to their myriad problems and find the way forward, they called on television networks in the country to show more Ghanaian films. This was because, the networks are not obliged by law to have their films certified by the Ghana Cinematography Board of Control of the Ministry of Information (GCBC).

They also called on the Copyright office to protect works of owners and on the police to help arrest dealers in uncertified films, pornographic materials and pirated works. They also asked the GCBC to furnish Immigration Services, CEPS and the Police with information on rejected films in Nigeria that find their way in through our borders and the Immigration Services to check foreigners who come to Ghana on a visit but stay to operate businesses.

The furore generated by the desire to ban Nigerian films by the stakeholders has not died down but it has gingered some government organisations connected with the film industry into action.Already an advertisement warning those involved in infringing on copyright produced by TV3 and the Copyright Office in association with the GCBC of the Ministry of Information is currently airing on TV3.

According to Mr. Quansah, a leading member of the FPAG, with effect from January 1, members have agreed not to bring in, sell or exhibit any Nigerian film for the next six months.“This decision was taken at a forum organised last November involving all the stakeholders held at the GAMA Films Executive Theatre to help check the unfair advantage that the Nigerian films had over the Ghanaian ones in terms of sales.

“It was also to ensure that all such films that come into the country are properly certified to conform to our cultural norms and practices and not offend the sensibilities of the public,He added.Mr Sakyi of the GCBC told the Graphic Showbiz that, on their part they will ensure that any film brought to their outfit, will be certified to conform with the rules and regulations as stipulated in the cinematography law and cause all who exhibit or sell such films not certified by his outfit to be dealt by the law.

The Copyright Administrator,Mr B.K. Bosumprah also told Showbiz that the Copyright Office is mandated to enforce the law and the provisions within it.According to him, it is an offence for one to import copyright works into the country, without the authorisation of the copyright owner or his office and so it is the responsibility of his office to look out for works from the 160 countries, who are signatories to the Berne Convention.

He explained that in the same way if works from Ghana find their way into any of these countries, they also have reciprocal responsibility to check the works to make sure they are not infringed upon.“It is not our mandate to ban any foreign works but to enforce the law which requires that any imported foreign work with copyright must have the prior authorisation or license of the owner.

Mr Bosumprah mentioned that most of the works that come into the country such as CD’s, DVD’s etc.including pornographic materials are brought in without requisite papers from the copyright owner by standards of the copyright law are unlawful transactions.

The Copyright Administrator disclosed that a task force has been put in place to monitor the activities of these people who infringe on the copyrights of other people. “Those caught flouting the law will be dealt with according to its tenets. He added.

He mentioned that it is a coincidence that the stakeholders in the film industry, have come to realise the need to check the harm being done to the audio/visual industry, by deciding not to patronise foreign works as against that of Ghanaian works.

well you said one african not NIGERIAN. our movie industry has now overtaken hollywood with just 30 yrs of existence in another 30 i believe more quality would be there.hollywood is like 100 yrs old so you cant compare the two at some things.its getting better i watched one in 1998 an then another in 2005, i saw the difference and it was the same producer.i thank God for them i beleive you should also coz some ppl in this world dont believe there are cd's in africa talkless of movie industry's and all sorts.they think we live in the jungle the portrayal of about 2000 yrs ago .even then i think we were bulding pyramids.you never can tell this fictional stuff you know with paid actress and desserted areas. africa is big so they get this places easily.anyway am glad we are on our game.

                                                                             PEACE

well nigerian films are not all great, i dont really watch them due to the fact that its all centrerd about the same ol' thing (native doctors)but the few that i watch are cool, so when people from ghana  or where ever make fun of nigerian films i just laugh at them becuase thier films are 100 times worse. this is not all hype people are actually buying these nigerian films so that alone is evidence that they are interested. the main problem i seemt o have with nigerian films is this now socalled nollywood mumbojumbo. they should stop that crappy name  for god sakes.

@ Soul Machine. i agree in regards to the name 'Nollywood', it  comes off as lazy and subordinate, even reminds me of the colonial triangle that operates in allot of East African countries- whites, asians and then Africans at the bottom.

'Hollywood' is the original, 'Bollywood' is quirky and anything else, and in this case 'Nollywood', just comes off as stupid.
