Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.

Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground Rio de Janiero. Technically flawless, the Brazilian film uses a rapid-cutting style to flash back and forth in time. Cinematographer Cesar Charlone shoots with an overexposed glow in a film that may seem numb to violence, but reveres photography. Director Meirelles was assisted by Katia Lund, a filmmaker who had previously shot in the Rio ghettos.

One of my fav film, good concept

My friend was going on about it, so I was skeptical about it, but after watching it, I couldn't stop but go on about it myself.

From the director of 'City Of God', comes 'City Of Men', a television spin-off series chronicling the struggle of Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva) trying to avoid the drug trade and survive in the violent streets of Rio De Janeiro.

These two series of 'City Of Men', nine episodes in all across two DVDS, combine a sharp sense of humour with a startlingly grim reality and brings the freshest and most exciting Brazilian talent to the small screen.

Yes very good film. I doubt the worst of the US or even Kingston JA has anything on Rio.

Kind of film you can watch more than once.

I love the expert way the story was told.  The cutbacks and flashes of memory and releasing the right story part at the right time.

There was nothing I could fault with this movie, it was technically excellent, good acting, brilliant story and exciting to.  To find out at the end that it was a true story as well... that was disturbing.  It was interesting to see the real figures speaking and so on.

Its one of my top ten films too.

I watched this last night and it was enjoyable for me to listen to the narration whilst watching the film, it was very vivid and easy to follow. The cinematography was brilliant. This is a definite must see film.

I watched a documentary about 15 years ago regarding the street kids of Rio - I was fifteen and had nightmares for weeks after watching.  I could just not get the kids out of my head.

I watched the film last year - It's excellent, distubing but also funny in a gritty real life way.

It's a must see!

What an absolutely fantastic film, I was completely transfixed form beginning to end. Brilliant acting, superb photography and gripping story.

I When I found out it was a true-life story, I actually sat there gob smacked.  With out a doubt one of the best films ever made.  I kinda feel bad I got the DVD on pirate a couple of years ago… this film deserves to take my hard earned cash… will buy the DVD to make up for it.

For those that watched city of god i recommend bus 174.

warning this is a documentary.it is NOT feel good and you will come away from it deeply traumatized.

so not for everyone.but this is the REAL story of cith of god.

"June 12, 2000, is a day that will forever be remembered by the people of Brazil. Early that morning, as the citizens of Rio de Janeiro woke up and made their way to work and school, several people fell victim to a dangerous hijacking on a bus near the city's historic botanical gardens. A lone gunman, seemingly insane or under the influence of narcotics, held his victims captive as authorities--and television cameras--surrounded the parked bus. Unable to determine his motives or purpose, the authorities stood their ground for four hours and tried to talk the hijacker into giving himself up. Meanwhile, the television cameras recorded every second with shocking intimacy, capturing the attention of the entire nation for the duration of the standoff.

Jose Padilha's nail-biting documentary thrillingly recounts the events of that fateful day, and also gives voice to the hijacker, 21-year-old Sandro do Nascimento. At a very young age, Sandro watched his mother be murdered. Later, as an orphaned teenager living on the streets of Rio, he survived the brutal police slaughter of several of his homeless friends. Poor, hopeless, and hooked on cocaine, Sandro finally reached his breaking point. Padilha's unflinching thriller boldly gives voice to Nascimento, proving that he also was a victim in this unfortunate situation.

some reviews of bus 174.

"A thoughtful, analytical yet still emotional film, meticulously investigated and absolutely compelling."
-- Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES

"What starts off as a documentary about a hostage crisis in Rio de Janeiro deepens with every passing minute. By the end, you realize you've seen an extraordinary movie, easily one of the best of the year."
-- Desson Thomson, WASHINGTON POST

"Padilha does much more than just present a hostage situation. He hunts down people who knew Nascimento and reconstructs his tortured life."
-- Ruthe Stein, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

"A deceptively straightforward film that has the force of tragedy and the depth of first-rate investigative journalism."
-- A.O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES

"It shares a bitter interest in slum desperation with last year's Brazilian-underbelly docudrama City of God, ''Bus 174'' pulls ahead, I think, by not confusing cinematic pizzazz with the content of misery."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

Semi off topic.

Has anyone watched the City Of Men spin off TV series? I brought it at HMV and thought it was pretty cool.

I'd heard so much about this film that I bought the DVD last year .  It's a very powerful, well-made and very well acted film.  You got to know the characters through their stories. niceone.gif

Also saw City of Men and enjoyed Acerola and Laranjinha adventures.

I've heard of Bus 174 and it's been getting good reviews in World Cinema - will keep an eye on it.

They've been selling the DVD for months now. I saw the BBC trailing it for BBC3 (or 4), went on the net and saw it for sale already.

I remember when I saw the commercial for it about a year ago on BET... nothing mentioned it was in Portuguese... so me and my friends go to see it... and we fell IN LOVE with City Of God.... the second it came out on DVD I bought it.  The cinematography of that movie is gorgeous, the plot is wonderful... and it is just a really good, raw film...

I wish that more people in NY could see this movie so they'd quit b*tching about how rough life in NY is... because I can't think of many people I know who would be able to cope with life in that part of Rio.

Some other movies I saw along the lines of City Of God, but not nearly as good were "Carandiru" and I think the other one was entitled "Passenger 56"... but I am not positive.  Brazil has some pretty gritty movies coming out.
