I'm sorry but I think that Berry and Denzel won the Oscars due to politics and I feel they were both undeserved. However, there have been some great performances from black actors/actresses that should have been awarded

Samuel L. Best Supporting Actor: JUNGLE FEVER, PULP FICTION
M. Freeman. Best Supporting Actor: SHAWASHANK REDEMPTION
Denzel. Best Actor: MALCOLM X

These are just a few, there must be tons more.

Definitely agree Denzel for Malcom X, Angela Bassett for "What's Love Got to do with it?".  Although Cuba Gooding Jnr was very good in Jerry McGuire, I was surprised he won the Oscar, I didn't feel he gave an Oscar winning performance, if anything maybe Boys in the Hood, I would have given Ice Cube a nomination, he played his character very well!! Whoopie should have received her Oscar for "The Colour Purple" as opposed to "Ghost"

Apart from Denzel, Samuel, Angela and Morgan, I don't feel there are any black actors that really have that "X-factor" for Oscar potentiality yet, of course my theory is their not getting good script offers.

I think Denzel should have at least been nominated for Antwon Fisher, as best Director. That was a very powerful film. If you watch the opening sequence you will see what I mean. I was also surprised that Derek Luke didn't get a nomination for the title role, he was outstanding in it. I agree definitely that Denzel should have gotten it for Malcolm X but it went to Al Pacino that year for Scent of a Woman. I personally was glad Denzel got it for "Training day"...he was again amazing and so outside of his usual character in that.

But he put it best in a recent interview with USA Today that he felt the training day win, was for a past performance, He says the academy tends to reward for a past performance. Actually many thought he should have won for "The Hurricane" too, he was outstanding in that as well.
I also believe Halle was deserving as well with her win. The scenes with the young boy who played her son were not only outstanding but heartfelt especially when she learned he had died. She really relayed the pain of a mother who had just lost a child in that scene. I cried endlessly in the theater the day I went to see the film.

Other notables who should have won or at the very least got a nomination...Jaime Foxx for "Any given Sunday", he also did a good job in "Ali"...
Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey and few others from "The Color Purple", Angela Bassett and Lawrence Fishburn from "What's Love Got to do with it?" Fishburn was dead on with his portrayal of Ike Turner. Hill Harper for "The Visit", he had a wonderful performance as an inmate afflicted with aids. I also agree Sam Jackson should have got a nod for "Jungle Fever"...Don Cheadle for "Devil in a Blue Dress"...this brother always brings it in whatever he stars in, he just doesn't get the credit he deserves nor does Jeffery Wright.
There are others I can't remember at the moment.

Maybe it was due to politics, but Denzel in Training Day was damn good, I mean i like the guy he is a likeable guy almost in every film, but in Training Day he made me hate his character so's I forgot it was my man Denzel, now that was a powerfull performance and I think he did deserve the oscar although it was surprising he got it for that type of a film.

Now another thing, I want to mention about Halle Berry's acceptance speech, man what the f**k was wrong with her? alright I know its the first time a black woman won and all but the state she was in and the scene she made. What I did not like about it was it took away the glory from Denzel , the fact that she caused that scene , the fact the she as a black women won the oscar as well, man that took a little well a lot away from Denzel big night who rightly deserved it. So for that reason Halle Berry is an idiot, talkin bout how this is good for black people , man she chat sh*t even Denzel said himself it dont mean sh*t for black people man she did not even deserve it and she made an ass of herself. and yes I have seen moster's ball but I also seen Angela Bassett in What's love gotta do with it.

What's black gotta do with it?

I tell you Denzel should of won for Malcolm X,

My thoughts are as follows;

It would be nice if "Whites" were truly "race neutral" when it came to picking films and acting performances.   But they are not.  They simply lie and pretend that they are.  Of course, there are many brilliant performances by Africans that should have been rewarded, but why kid ourselves?  It will never happen.  Movies about African/African-American Culture(s) just don't have  any appeal.  "Whites" will fawn all over Asian fantasy movies like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", but the truth about the African experience bothers them.

So we need to continue to have our own high standards for our own Cinema.  We need to continue to reward great peformances with award shows such as "Essence", "NAACP", etc., etc.  We have to make sure that we appreciate Africans who make culturally themed movies for us.  If we do not, we cannot then blame them for doing more mainstream material.

The house will not be built unless we build it.

I see this thread has been dragged from the dead. It is quite a naive OP from me

One must consider who did win when dscusiing who you think should win. (e.g) Malcolm X. Pacino won for Scent of a Woman( and the 6 other snubs probably hepled as well). Clint Eastwood and Robert Downey jr were nominated  for career best performances in Unforgiven and Chaplin respectively. the outsider was probably Chris Rea in The Crying Game

Check on Wikipedia. They list all the winners.

Ok I'm pushing it with Adrian Lester ( Don't know how good his accest was!) Denzil also acsent wise and wasn't in the film long enough, then again no was Judy Dench that much in shakespear in Love in which she won the best supporting actress. Ok cuba did look a touch lost sometimes in Boyz, but Sam and Halle in Jungle Fever I feel put in pretty good performances. Zakes the man and is always worth a mention maybe change the film to "The Comedians"? I also think those two Spike Lee films are very underrated.

Three that stick out in mind but not alone are,

Best Director:

Spike Lee - Do the Right Thing and Malc X

Best Actor:

Denzel Washington - Malcolm X, The Hurricane

Instead they chose Kevin Spacey in the 'American Beauty' which i honestly thought was a pile of sh*t to put it midly.

Oscars won't 'Listen' — Beyonce disqualified in song race

You can not only forget about Beyonce Knowles winning an Oscar for best actress this year. (If you haven't heard, a certain ingenue keeps upstaging her throughout "Dreamgirls.") Now it looks like Beyonce won't win as a songwriter either — for "Listen," one of the original new tunes added to the original Broadway score. Officially, she's listed as one of the song's four writers, but the motion-picture academy only permits three names — max — as a credit. To see the specific language of its Rule 16, click here: http://www.oscars.org/79academyawards/rules/rule16.html The Oscars' songwriting branch has decided to qualify Henry Krieger, Anne Preven and Scott Cutler. No explanation is given for why Beyonce is excluded over the others. Is this just one of those cases of where the singer insisted upon having her name added to credits as part of her performance deal? Beyonce says "No!" In media interviews, she's often said that she was truly involved in its songwriting. Apparently, not to the extent as her three collaborators.

Take heart, Beyonce fans. Not only is she nominated in the actress race at the Globes, but she'll be among the people who share the credit for "Listen" if it wins best song there.

Off topic slightly, but watched Paul Verhoeven "Black Books" recently which was excellent. Oddly enought, it would make the perfect companion piece to Spike's Inside Man - they are both about wartime thievery and exploitation. In fact i it is better to watch Spike's film first and then Verhoeven, it would give an eerie but good feel about that history "experienced" retroactively, and it would  show off spike casting of Chris Plummer as being spot on. They are both great films about  greed and exploitation.

Sounds interesting, good to see that old pervert Paul Verhoven has rediscovered his touch

Don't be too hard of Verhoeven. He just likes to bring a touch of Northern Europen raunchinessto hollywood. There is, as expected, nudity in this  one as well with a flash of the now infamous verhoeven beaver shot....the heroine is sitting on a chair putting blonde hair dye on her crotch when in walks one of her admirers. Cue some playful crossing of legs and hiding of beaver...its a funny homage to that scene in basic instinct.

Who deserves oscars and did not get one?

This is not restricted to Black Actors or Actresses.

Peter O'Toole

Richard Burton

Richard Harris

None won an oscar. All of them quality actors.

Halle Berry and Denzil Washington won oscar for mediocre roles and performances.

Certainly:

Forrest Whitiker deserves one for Best Actor (Last King of Scotland)

and Jennifer Hudson Best supporting actor (Dream Girls) That girl blow me a way with her performance brilliant.

That's the problem cashmoney He should have won one for LOA but if he was to win one now for his lastest film it would rob Forest like he was robbed.

Look at Burton................It's incrediable that he never got one, either he was severely robbed or the talent in thoses days was supreme!!!

@ Dada

After seeing Last King of Scotland I would be OK with Forest not winning

He was really good but he werent as unbeleivable as was made out imo

I'm actually surprised that McAvoy ddint get a bit of love in terms of nominations. I really thought he did well , not as well as Fores but well enough to get at least a GG nomination

I am going to have to agree with you. McAvoy was good in his role and without forest being in it, he should have been in askance for a nomination, but I am going to have to say that forest literally and metphorically "overshadowed" him.

And I'll have to admit to being prejudice and nominate him for being a good Black Actor that should get his dues, The crying game, ghost dog ...........McAvoy is young there will be other roles ;)
