'Collateral' Pushes Foxx Up Hollywood's Food Chain

By Bob Tourtellotte
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - He calls Tom Cruise "top of the food chain," but comic actor Jamie Foxx is rising fast to rival his co-star in the thriller "Collateral," which debuts on Friday.
Early buzz has Foxx's dramatic turn as a meek cab driver called Max opposite a villainous Cruise giving him Oscar momentum ahead of October's "Ray," which could earn him a nomination for playing the late soul music legend Ray Charles.
Foxx, 36, welcomes the Oscar buzz because it draws attention to his growing body of work and fuels the appetite for greater things he believes lie ahead.
"If you're really serious about the business and people are saying that, encourage it," Foxx told Reuters. "If I get close this year, I say: 'Well, wait until you see what's next' ... the more people who recognize the work and see it, gets you to a bigger audience."
Foxx has come a long way from his first break as loud-mouthed Wanda the masseuse in the sketch comedy show "In Living Color," which also starred comedians like Jim Carrey and Marlon Wayans and was popular in the early 1990s.
He first showed dramatic flare in Oliver Stone's football film "Any Given Sunday," but it was playing Drew "Bundini" Brown, a member of boxer Muhammad Ali's entourage, in "Ali" that earned him clout as a serious actor.
Foxx said he thinks people connect for higher purposes, and the roles he takes come to him for certain reasons. "Ali" director Michael Mann also hired him for "Collateral." Bundini beget Max, and Max was a precursor to Ray Charles.
"Max" Foxx said, "is a complete departure for Jamie Foxx."
NO HACK ACT
"Collateral" takes place from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. in Los Angeles. Max is a taxi-driver who dreams of owning a limousine service, but he fears risking his safe job to go out on his own.
As much as Foxx plays against type, Cruise also sheds his clean cut image to play assassin Vincent, who hops into Max's cab for a night of business appointments.
Max does not know Vincent's job is murder, but when the killer's first target jumps from a window and lands on his taxi, Max learns fast.
The remainder of the night explores the differences and the similarities of these two men. As much as it is a gripping thriller of car crashes, gun battles and martial arts fights, "Collateral" also looks at personal motivation and morality.
Foxx more than holds his own in the movie as past Oscar nominee Cruise pokes a gun in the back of his head.
Mann -- who has directed Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis and Russell Crowe -- calls Foxx "a great actor" and said his talent stems from watching how people act and react, mimicking them, then adding his own touch to the characters.
Foxx said the key is "going from mimicry to nuance ... slip on a shirt, then decorate that shirt how you want."
For Max, he drove around L.A. in taxis listening to the stories of hacks. One driver's secret to success was making regular clients of people who were convicted of drunk driving.
If early, strong reviews for Foxx in "Collateral" continue streaming in and "Ray" proves as good as early buzz, then Foxx may join Cruise at the top of acting's food chain this year.
Fame can be fleeting in Hollywood, and Foxx knows that. He has been there before, of course, but only as a comedian, never as an Oscar nominee.
As much as he welcomes the attention, he's not really sure he wants to be a big fish in the Hollywood pond, like Cruise.
"You want things to be where you can still live -- not at the top of the food chain. I don't know if I would stand that type of heat," Foxx said.
But somewhere inside, he's got to be kidding.

I like Jamie, but this, along with the nekkid b-ball incident, seems fruity...Maybe he just gay-friendly....

Cruise Pricey Watch
Comedian Jamie Foxx enjoyed his experience of working with Tom Cruise on Collateral so much, he bought the actor a $20,000 diamond watch as a sign of gratitude. Foxx missed out on the opportunity to work with Cruise on 1996's Jerry Maguire, when he lost the role to Cuba Gooding Jr. But while working with Cruise on Collateral, the pair became close pals and Foxx decided to mark their newfound friendship with an 8.5 carat King A1 Avianne & Co watch. And the generous actor also purchased a 3.18 carat watch, costing $3,800, for co-star Jada Pinkett Smith. Foxx says, "Making Collateral with Tom and Jada was more than just work for me - they are true friends and I wanted to show my appreciation. This watch is Tom's official bling."

@ naija
Sorry for not getting back sooner...was reminded of this when I saw all these extra threads popping up on JF.
There isn't much I can add other than what the article said. Jamie is an american comedic actor, who is best known for his start on the old sketch-comedy series In living Colour which was created by Keenan Ivory Wayans. He played the hilariously funny character called Wanda on that show...he has now gone on to add serious actor to his resume' with incredible performances in the movies Any Given Sunday and Ali.

CHARLES IN CHARGE
BLIND AMBITION: Jamie Foxx has Oscar on his mind in career-making Ray Charles tribute
By RUSSELL SCOTT SMITH
October 24, 2004 (New York Post) -- Jamie Foxx does a great Bill Cosby. As fans of his standup comedy know, Foxx can also do a mean Mike Tyson and a hilarious, shaky Ronald Reagan.
But in the new biopic, "Ray," which opens Friday, this talented mimic does more than impersonate the late, great Ray Charles, he becomes him - and many are saying he'll take home an Oscar for it.
Foxx has come a long way from the days when he played the cross-eyed drag queen Ugly Wanda on TV's "In Living Color" and a guy named Bunz in the eminently forgettable 1997 goof "Booty Call."
Hollywood is buzzing that Foxx is the new Denzel, and Charles himself gave Foxx his stamp of approval before production on "Ray" started last year - though not before he'd run the actor through a wringer.
"The first thing he said was, 'Let me check these fingers out,'" Foxx, 36, recalls of his meeting at Charles' L.A. production studio.
"He's like, 'Oh, you got strong fingers. Oh yeah.'"
It's no wonder. Foxx wanted to be a professional pianist when he was a kid. During high school in Terrell, Texas, he made $300 a month playing for cocktail parties and his church choir.
But it took more than that to impress Ray Charles, so during that meeting, he invited Foxx to sit down and jam with him.
"He said, 'If you can play the blues, Jamie, you can do anything,'" Foxx recalls.
The pair traded licks for a while, and at first, the actor could keep up. But then Charles laid down a complicated Thelonious Monk bebop riff that stopped Foxx cold.
"It was the equivalent of riding a mechanical bull when you've had too many drinks," the actor recalls.
"You just fly all the way out into the bar."
Foxx just couldn't get the Monk lick down, and Charles teased him mercilessly.
"Ray really put Jamie through his paces," recalls the movie's director, Taylor Hackford. "He was pretty rough on him."
When Foxx hit one particularly sour note, Charles barked at him.
"Now, why the hell would you do that?" he said.
"And he was very serious about it. He wasn't laughing," Foxx says.
"He goes, 'The notes are right there under your fingers, Jamie. You just have to take the time out to find them, young man.'"
It was at that moment that Foxx understood Charles' character, and his interpretation deepened past the smiling, rocking-back-and-forth clich‚. "I understood that Ray's whole life is sound. When his sound is out of whack, his life is out of whack."
And that was just the beginning.
While he was making "Ray," Foxx wore a prosthetic glued over his eyes for 14 hours a day.
"Most actors wouldn't do that," Hackford says. "They might experiment with a blindfold for a few hours.
"But Jamie really did it. I would lead him onto the set. He had people to take him to the bathroom."
Even more impressive was the way Foxx learned to imitate Charles at the piano.
Foxx actually sings a few of the songs in the movie - the ones from the beginning of Charles's career, when Ray was basically a Nat King Cole imitator trying to find his voice.
Of course, Hackford wanted to use the real recordings for such Charles classics as "I Got a Woman," "Georgia On My Mind" and "What'd I Say."
"Those are masterpieces," Hackford says. "You don't mess with those."
But that meant Foxx had to learn the songs and play them in perfect sync with Charles' recordings, so that the film looked right.
Clearly Foxx has a lot more talent than he got a chance to show in "Booty Call."
It won't come as a surprise to those who knew him while in Terrell, a town of 13,000 near Dallas, when he still went by his birth name, Eric Bishop.
Foxx jokes that his first acting job was when he was a kid and the insurance-company bill collector would come to the door.
"My grandma would say, 'Go tell him I ain't here.'
"I'd say, 'I told him that last month.'
"And she'd go, 'Well, you better make something up.'"
But Foxx always seemed destined for something bigger than Terrell.
He played trumpet in the school band, got excellent grades and was the starting quarterback for the Terrell Tigers. He was such a good athlete, in fact, that the Dallas papers wrote about him as a pro-football prospect.
But after graduation, Foxx moved to California to attend San Diego's U.S.
International University on a piano scholarship, and then found a true calling at his 21st birthday party in 1988, when his girlfriend urged him to get onstage at an open-mike night at a comedy club.
"That's when I knew what I wanted to do," recalls Foxx, who changed his name after realizing that comedy-club owners prefer sexy female comics. (He experimented with other androgynous names such as Stacy King and Tracy Brown, settling on the winner.)
Foxx first showed his drama chops as the embittered, bench-warming quarterback in Oliver Stone's 1999 film, "Any Given Sunday." It got him noticed he soon landed the role as convicted murderer turned Nobel Peace Price nominee Stan "Tookie" Williams in last year's TV drama "Redemption."
This summer, he stole scenes from Tom Cruise in the Michael Mann-directed thriller "Collateral." And he's currently in talks to reteam with Mann for a movie adaptation of the director's famous '80s' cop show, "Miami Vice," in which he'd play Tubbs opposite Colin Farrell's Crockett.
Despite his dramatic success, Foxx says comedy remains his true love.
He's working on plans for a new stand-up tour, and this summer he hosted the ESPN Espy awards - at one point famously embarrassing Serena Williams with a nutty song called "Can I Be Your Tennis Ball?"
"Bernie Mac and Cedric the Entertainer were at the Espys," Foxx says.
"And I just had to let them know, 'Don't sleep on me!' All the comics out there think that I got soft. But I'm keeping up the heat on them."
It seems like Foxx can do anything.
Give him a chance and he can even master Thelonious Monk.
It took him 15 minutes, but Foxx finally figured out the tricky Monk lick that Ray Charles had been trying to show him.
When he did it, Charles jumped off the piano bench, hugged himself and swayed from side to side.
"Ray himself anointed Jamie at that point," Hackford recalls.
"He said, 'This is it. This is the kid. He's got it!'"

Update...an excerpt from an article by Reuters on the new Movie Ray which is in theaters starting today.
'Ray' on Track to Top U.S. Box Office
Halloween is Sunday, and Hollywood is ready for another weekend of fright.
But while Lions Gate Films' "Saw" and the second week of Sony Pictures' reigning champ "The Grudge" should attract their share of fans, the likely winner for the frame is anything but horror fare. Instead, Universal Pictures' biopic about the late Ray Charles is on track to take the top spot.
"Ray," which Universal acquired in March from Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz's Bristol Bay Prods., features a remarkable performance from Jamie Foxx , who spent 14-hour days with his eyes sealed shut to make his performance more realistic. The Oscar buzz is deafening.
The PG-13 film, directed by Taylor Hackford ("Proof of Life," "La Bamba"), already has been well received, and Universal is expecting a long theater life. "Ray" is tracking strong and has seen interest percolate among blacks of all ages, women and older men. Industry insiders put the film's opening weekend in the high-teen millions and possibly into the $20 million range, depending on how Halloween affects Sunday grosses.

Been meaning to start this thread for a while now. Anyway I saw Ray last week, and I really thought it was a brilliant movie, and Jamie Fox, reallly deserves an oscar. (Not just because Halle Berry got it for that rubbish movie ).
Just wanted to know what other people felt about it? Do you think he will win? Or any1 who thinks this movie is just hype-and reasons behind it. For example if this movie was about a white music legend, and was as good, would the black community still be hyping that the lead actor should win an oscar? Was Jamie foxx's performance good for a black actor, or on par with all the movie legends(regardless of colour)? I personally think it was, but would like to hear the argument against.
Also I saw this movie with my housemates, all black, but we were in a cinema, with only white peeps, ...Uxbridge Odeon. But they didnt seem to get it. Some elements (im not gonna spoil it for those you havent seen it, was really funny, or really sad etc), but they werent fazed at all. I even heard some of them saying it was rubbish!! Is this reaction gona stop Mr Foxx getting the Oscar? Has any1 else noiced this?
Also what do the females think of the character of B? was she silly to stick around, despite knowing what she knew? Or is that what a black women needs to do, stand by her man? Is this just a perfect example of the saying behind every good black man, is a good, wonderful, powerful, beautiful black woman? (i added bits.... but oh well!)
Another thing, it cost £6.80 to see da blasted film!!! I smiled and tried to draw out my student discount card, but OH NO, no nus @ weekends, or friday.... What a bump so after buying my popcorn, and a bottle of water i spent damn near £15!!!!, and they wonder why the pirate industry is bomming!! In future im gona go corner shop buy some toffe popcorn, and a big 2litre bottle of water, and breeze in!!!

The film was "all dat" AND a bowl of grits...
Jamie had Ray down pat.
I don't know if he'll get an Oscar for his performance but don't mis-calculate his chances just by the reaction of whites in your particular area.
Whites in England and whites in America have 2 different tastes and experiences.
Most whites overhere tend to be somewhat nostalgic and love to see old fashioned black entertainers singing jazz and blues....reminds them of the "good ole days".
They're totally into it.

| Definetly an Oscar performance. One of the best movies that I have seen this year. Jamie Foxx really surprised me, I didn't know that he had it in him.

sorry, it ws a good performance, but better then Don Cheedle, not on your nelly!!!!!
He spent too much time trying to look like Ray , but didnt sing.??!!!! Its like when you watch Stars in Your Eyes and Matthew Kelly says, we voting for the best sounnd-a-like not look-a-like. The fact he doesnt sing really doesnt do it for me
That will stop him winning the oscar, it f**ked up Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Ldy and I think it will stop him now

I saw it and personally thought that he (Jamie Foxx) was brilliant... I have to see the other Oscar contenders to see whether I think it is got a good chance of winning...
Cashmoney: I know what you mean about Audrey Hepburn but then she sang all the orginal songs, and they went and dubbed it... so it was the film director, and production team who are to blame. But, then My Fair Lady was marketed as a musical, while Ray was a biopic... hmmmm have to see what happens...
Cims you are going to hate me, I saw Ray in Peckham it cost me £2.99 as that is the price all day everyday. With regard to B, I don't think that she was a fool, I just think that back then people were willing to tough it out. And despite the womanising, she knew that he loved her.
I have to say despite everything I respected him, and his drive in the end to quit doing heroin... the scenes where he is remembering his brother drowning made me jump....
there was a part where he was packing the suitcase and all you can see is this childs arm amongst the clothing...
And Ray's, mother Aretha, she was an amazing woman too...

| I have a feeling that Foxx and Cheadle may cancel each other out and DiCaprio may win.Though brillant "Hotel Rwanda" has had a very limited here run in the US.

To our US cousins
I've been reading oin the IMDB forum about Ray. Has Jamie Foxx been playing racial politics in his pre-oscar interviews. I cant really trust IMDB views beacuse they are mostly white and there opionion might be skewed.

Just saw this film the other day, and i thought it was great, the reviews were correct for once, he gave an uncanny performance. It also gave me a different perspective on Ray Charles, I had this tendency to view him as asexual simply because he was blind (wrong i Know) but i've seen the light now. I also feel Jamie Fox deserves to win an oscar, simply because he gave a good performance, not because his a black actor, Sidney Poiter was once asked, how he is viewed as a black actor, his response was, he should be viewed as an actor and respected as such. And i agree with this completely. It didn't really matter that he did not sing, he did an excellent job of miming to the words so that was ok for me. It would have been worse if he had sung and sang really badly. From what i've seen a lot of people are vying for him to win an oscar, regardless of cultures. He won a Golden Globe for best actor, so maybe The Oscar's will beckon to him. If not, it won't be because of his acting ability, it will be down to the politics of Hollywood. I mean it took almost 70 years for Denzal to win best Actor by an African American.
On the issue if B should have stayed or left. It's very hard to judge such circumstances, regardless of race, some women decide to stay in such situations for best reasons known to them. Ray obviously had some demons he needed to face, he eventually kicked his drug habit after 20 yrs. I'll be interested to know if she stayed with him until his death. I was reading an article about him and it states he is survived by 12 kids. Very busy man our Ray. Anyone have anymore info on this?
Did anyone see the tribute they had on ITV last week, it was off the hook! Mary J, Al Green and Stevie Wonder, were on fire!

Cims you are going to hate me, I saw Ray in Peckham it cost me £2.99 as that is the price all day everyday. With regard to B, I don't think that she was a fool, I just think that back then people were willing to tough it out. And despite the womanising, she knew that he loved her.
U see it!!! try to support a brother & i get bumped!!!! £2.99 for pirates???? Rah, East London is far behind... there like £5 each!!! mad, so, so mad!!!
And Ray's, mother Aretha, she was an amazing woman too...
She was brilliant, the scene where she leaves him crying on the floor, so he has the confidence to go it alone, brought tears to my eyes!!!! Tough love? it was just love pure & simple!! And her line 'scratch a liar, find a thief'? Too much, very poignant and applies even more today.

Cims, not £2.99 for pirate, I mean £2.99 for the cinema...
Peckham multiplex have this deal going on where all tickets are now £2.99 any day of the week...
I loved the part where the Adult Ray saw his mother and brother... that was incredible
