'White Chicks,' a big drag, lays a big egg

By Tom Long / Detroit News Film Critic

Marlon and Shawn Wayans star in "White Chicks."

'White Chicks'

Derivative, crude and so predictable it hurts, “White Chicks will likely be the biggest box office moneymaker of the week, offering cheap yuks to audiences comforted by jokes they’ve heard before and goosed by safe-at-the-movies, quasi-racist snickering. Such is the dismal state of American comedy.

Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and starring younger siblings Shawn (not terribly talented, but good looking) and Marlon (talented far beyond this film), “White Chicks is the fully preposterous story of two FBI agents who smother themselves in latex and makeup to impersonate a couple of spoiled blonde, airhead heiresses (Paris Hilton, check your mirror) who are potential kidnapping targets.

Let’s turn this around — if Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson were starring in a film where they donned black makeup to impersonate urban sisters, how big would that go over? They’d be accused of every sort of racism under the sun. But somehow it’s OK here, even though the African-American stereotype reactions are just as offensive as the white stereotype reactions (and just for good measure the film starts off with a flurry of Latino stereotypes).

But let’s not dally on the social import of this film, since ultimately it has none. It is a movie chock-full of little dog jokes, flatulence jokes, thong wisecracks and guys-in-bras hilarity.

There is the requisite dance-floor showdown scene that has graced every stupid film from “Airplane to “Starsky & Hutch, although done here with almost no flair.

And of course there’s the models-falling-down-on-one-another runway scene. Novelty, thy name is not Wayans.

Plot? Who knows, who cares? It somehow involves John Heard as a rich guy gone broke who’s plotting something bad at the Hamptons during the height of the social season, and our black brothers gone white chicks are there undercover to foil it. Right.

There are some laughs, mainly involving Marlon Wayans and Terry Crews as a pro basketball star who falls for the sexy white chick who’s actually a dude. The laughs don’t really have much to do with the writing, the two actors simply exercise a physical abandon that’s plain funny.

But as a movie, “White Chicks is a string of mostly been-there, sex-race jokes laced together over a barely existent plot in a slapdash manner. At best, it’s a guilty pleasure that’s heavy on the guilt and lacking in pleasure.

Sadly, the Wayans have realized if they make this kind of garbage, we will come. Perhaps if we didn’t they’d make something better.

To our American cousins, how has this film been recieved by blacks and whites. I was reading a forum and it seems to have causewd upoar amongst the white community:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381707/

very strong vuews on there.

To be honest, the title is inflammotory and the Wayns should have known better. The main arguemnet is that f it had been two white guys dressed as black chicks using the stereotypes of black women, there would be big problems, Do you agree?

Any replies wil be appreciated

Actually I have heard the contrary....The reviews I have read were basically mixed and within those reviews, the writers thought the Wayans brothers handled race in a clever way noting that the movie turned out to be a story about class more so than anything. The Wayans (Sean and Marlon) addressed your point recently during a promotional stop for the movie on BET's 106th and Park...one of them said that if you consider what Hollywood has been doing in reverse for many years, their film doesn't even come close to that type of stereotyping, which sadly continues to this day. To illustrate his point he used the recently panned Soul Plane as an example about how the industry is quick to green light a movie that's full of generalizations and stereotypes about black people, yet you hear nothing from other communities.

@ Ashanti --  I understand what you are saying and I have watched (painfully) as the Wayans bros have been doing their the usual morning talk show promos.....and I have wondered if this movie was a project they should have done.

Just because there are white movies stereotyping, it doesnt mean that we should do same.

In all fairness,  I havent seen the movie, but the little I have seen makes me cringe too much to spend my $8.00 to go and see it

@Cash...Just shows to me the lack of amibition, creativity and pure damn laziness of the Wayan bros and much of their work actually, as reflective of much black comedy. Heard about the film "Soul Plane" from people whose judgement I respect and they said from the bits they have seen or read about it looks appalling.

Just laziness and I dislike laziness....and will not reward it with my money. Go and see a decent white film instead...

I hear ya...I'm not a fan of the tit for tat business either...and like you have not seen this film and am not sure I want to. I have to admit I was a bit taken aback by the title...perhaps they should have given that a bit more thought as well. But I am not surprised this movie got the green light...this is typical of Hollywood.

I've seen previews/trailers for it, and it doesn't look that good. One thing I've realized is that although they may have produced it, they got the green light, finance and distribution from somewhere else. Hollywood is dominated and run by white Americans, so I don't know why they gave the go ahead.

One thing I've noticed about American Black films is the lack of scope, Sept for Denzel Washington and Will Smith (to a lesser extent) there aren't really any other black leading men (I know about comediennes etc). This kind of ties into the report Ashanti showed about the lack of sexuality on screen for AA's.

Films with Afro-Americans are really limited in scope and display the usually limited archetypes. I've read some stuff that suggests that minorities are usually used in supporting roles (lately it’s usually been a rapper) in order to widen its appeal, while leaving the lead white. To me this also furthers the myth that it’s usually a clean and true white lead, with his faithful devoted black side kick (a good book to read is ‘Screen Saviors’).

Probably green lit it because of its relatively low budget and the controversy factor associated with the title/premise. From what I gathered it did well in it's opening weekend, so that's probably all that mattered. Plus it gives white Americans the (wrong) opinion that blacks are allowed to make whatever type of movies they want, so whenever you complain in the future about representation on screen, people will be able to use things like this to discredit you.

Brother...this is what Hollywood does...the bottom line is money. Stereotypes play well in that industry...that's why it's not a surprise that this movie found distribution.

Hollywood wants that hook...something that grabs attention and is a guaranteed money maker and these types of movies do well...Queen Latifah's flick with Steve Martin did really well at the box office despite less than stellar reviews... I think it was Bringing Down The House.....The premise was con teaches uptight husband how to be cool...in other words, black stereotype tries to teach white stereotype about stereotypical black culture.

One other point....there are many good films produced, directed and that star blacks but they never see the light of day in part because of lack of money, the potential to make back a profit (in the eyes of studios), and they don't fit with what they (those in control, the folks with the money) think you want to see, especially if it is positive or balanced.

The Wayans have the talent, brains and money to make better films than this - I saw a short clip of it and wasn't impressed.  The title alone says it all.  But I find whether in films, interviews or hosting a show, race always crops up in their speeches.

They can and should do better than this!

blkthumbsdown I, for one, am NOT a Wayans fan by a long shot. To me, that family (and a lot of other black writers and directors of horrible films) are the biggest pieces of sh*t in the entertainment industry and have done more damage to our image than most. EVERY film they've done has displayed coonery on a large scale, and they do it under the guise of 'laughing at' stereotypes.

I don't care about whites being stereotyped or lampooned, but I believe that a lot of blacks in the entertainment industry should be held accountable and shamed for making movies that continually degrade us and have a subconcious effect on the mental and emotional wellbeing of black youth.

I saw the film Soul Plane recently, and I'm just convinced that there must be some kind of competition in the industry to see who can be the most ignorant of them all. Fortunately, Soul Plane was a flop. One scene that I found extremely offensive was the scene when a brotha who played an African born co-pilot put in an African cd and Snoop Dogg (who's another one) said something along the lines of "N****rs don't wanna hear that 'Boo-waa-waa' sh*t" - despite the African cd sounding better than everything else in the film.

I just don't understand it. We have such a great history that we can draw ideas from and make movies about. What about an epic movie based on an ancient African kingdom for example? Where's all our own 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragons'? Instead we make films where everything has to be about drug dealing, pimping, shooting etc and the sistas disgrace themselves on a regular basis...if anyone has seen the film Lockdown, you will witness one of the WORSE characters an African woman could ever portray.

I'm sure all our ancestors who fought and died would really be proud.

Before I get started with this post I would just like to say that in particular I would like the opinions of people who have actually seen it or intend to.

Now we all know the argument about how Blacks rarely get the opportunity to contribute quality offerings in Hollywood etc,so why have we put out another piece of sh...blah blah..,  we all have heard and are well versed in that tune, so I am just establishing that this thread isnt about that so much as it is about the  following:

If we flip the script for a moment consider this, could a movie be made entitled Black Chicks? with say Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in the lead roles. If you dont think so say why.

I suggest that if we have the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen parodying certain aspects of Black and Hip-Hop culture then White Chicks is fair game, but would it be reasonable for White Chicks to be offended by this movie?? even though it is only portraying one sub-culture in the White woman-hood?

Again I am just putting these questions out there to see what y,all think.

In terms of the movie itself, the humour is VERY BROAD but there are 2 standout sequences in it which make it worth a look.

The white girl make-up is very disturbing and at the same time fascinating and the characterisation that the Wayans brothers bring to these "chicks" makes you suspend disbelief for a moment or two.

So having said that I dont think that this movie is totally worthless, I appreciate it on the effort  levels involved as well as the two MAJOR and genuine laughs it managed to give me.

So if you havnt seen it and want to then I would encourage you too so that you can come back and respond this thread.

OK,the floor is yours...................

We should make this film month March film

I havet seen it by I will answer one question

It would totally not be ok for there to be an equivalent black chicks'' with clive owen and adam sndler wearing black make up and but implants. The NAACP will protest, Jesse Jackson will call for an enquiry. Sad but true??? You see its the same reason why there isnt a white comedian, who is racially prolific as Chris Rock,

Yes,I take your point, but exam further why that is please?I know what my thoughts are but id like to read detailed thoughts of others before I start pontificating.;)

Because this argument is the meat of the thread.

Dressing up as women and acting gay might be funny the first ten times you do it (well not to me) but when you do it all the time its like you are trying to say something.

Yeah well maybe those are the only things they are good at, maybe thats their speciality not everyone can have the range and depth of Morgan Freeman, it doesnt mean that they are gay. Then all of the brothers must be gay coz when Damon Wayons(My Wife and Kids)was on In Living Color with Jim Carey his biggest character on that sketch show was a Gay one, all I know is Damon has about 25 kids and is already a Grand-father so if thats the NEW gay then we are all fooked.bighairlol

The movie White Chicks... I wasn't too fond of it because the Wayans convinced those ditzy white girls that it is ok to say n*gga when no black people are around... that big, ex con looking brother only wanted one of the Wayans because he thought "she" was white, didn't really care that it was a man... it was overall just a pretty foolish movie... the characters were not appealing.

A movie called Black Chicks... why build onto any more stereotypes about black people (because there are FAR too many)... I would consider trying to personally whoop the main characters' azzes.  Besides... it touches too much on Black face... therefore it is pretty safe to say... white folks have already done their share of "Black Chicks" and shouldn't even think about it.

i thought the film was actaully kinda of  funny considering the amount of sterotypes that it had portrayed, the one i did'nt particular like however was the negative aspect of being a black women, near to the end of the film when, the wifey and her friend was gonna fight, the 'white' girls. i hate those sterotypes, it makes me cringe like that song 'girl fight', silly silly song.

the most engaging part however was when that stupid black man who loved off the white women was singin in the car, his facial experessions were second to none, bare joke.

miss price.
