I finally got round to watching it and umm... not what I expected.
The story follows Geum Ja as she emerges from 13 years inside prison she served for killing a little boy. She comes out with a plan involving former inmates who owe her favours in order to get her vengeance on the real killer and find redemption for herself. She wants to live pure but knows she can't be until she kills him. The climax of the story arrives when she kidknaps the killer, who we find is a serial killer, and invites the parents of the children he's killed to discuss his fate.
Do they hand him to the police or do they seek a swift and bloody vengeance for themselves?
Disturbing in many places I thought. Several scenes toward the end kinda shocked me. The familys in plastic suits holding knives ready to take turns butchering the guy who killed their kids... the familys leaving the burial site to go eat cake and make small talk... the ransom videos... Very upsetting stuff. A special scene for me was Guem Ja talking to her daughter through a translator, (he being the dude she's set to kill) while holding a gun to his head. Him blubbing out the words the mother and daughter are exchanging while thinking of his own death and sins.
I do like the pace and style of the movie though. At first I had no idea what was going on. Why she took the rap if she didn't do it, what the plan was, what scenes were past or present and so on. But going along it stitched together nicely.
It throws up the obvious moral question though, the one the parents faced. The choice between Geum Ja's violent retribution or the policeman's official way. The discussion they have around that and the reasoning probably mirrors the way most people feel about that sort of issue. I reckon most of us would prefer Geum Ja's method of dealing with child killers, paedophilles and so on. But watching it play out, you start to wonder about the sanity of the people and the after effects of taking part in something like that. How do you get over butchering somebody?
The main part of the movie is about not only revenge but absolution. Atonement. She is constantly seeking to atone for her sins, first visiting the parents and chopping off her finger. She refuses to eat the white Tofu when she firsts comes out of prison because she isn't pure enough and is actively planning more sins. This is explained in the aforementioned conversation with her daughter. Top ratings for this movie, definately a must see.

| By the way, has anybody seen Oldboy or Sympathy for Mr Vegeance? The others in this series? Apparently they're just as good.
