Well, Just got back from watching this film and gotta say its not a film you wanna watch with your DENZEL/BRADPIT loving girlfriend I thought this was fantastic. It's going to be widely ridiculed, and rightly so, because viewed with any kind of critical distance it becomes extremely funny, but I haven't had so much fun in the cinema for years.
300 is such a simple, fundamental pleasure that words can't really do it justice, but let's have a go: For starters, it's a film written entirely in capital letters. It's 90 solid minutes of buffed, burnished men yelling "RAAAAAAAAARGH!" again and again and hitting each other as hard as they possibly can, shot with a visual flair that rivals Zhang Yimou(the chinese director), and using a palette so stylised that it might as well be animation.
It's Mel's big speech from Braveheart stretched to feature length. It's both incredibly macho and fantastically gay esp the PERSIAN KING..that dude was soooo GHAAAY. Like Sin City, it is all about the look (and like Sin City, it has the moral sophistication of a lynch mob, but that's another post). It's very violent without being cruel, completely lacking in irony while still managing to be intentionally funny and never, ever dull. Oh, and the cozzies are divine so go and catch it

OK I managed to aquire this film, and i must say Miles was on point with his observations... this film is some homosexuals wet dream. also I can only assume that the Spartans must have had an hearing impediment, because they just loved shouting at each other and anyone else in close proximity....
Plus was I the only one who thought that 7ft Godking voice did not match his transexual look? I must say i can see now why the persians of today were just a touch pissed off by their representation of their culture...(it didn't escape my notice either that all the bad guys were BLACK and the good guys were muscle bound & WHITE), it was also quite clear that the persians were made out to be one step down from the third Reich....Last edited on Monday March 26th, 2007 20:02 by Kunjufu

Exactly, but many folks don't know how to separate the two. We know that just by reading a history book. Yeah, it's standard racist faire. . .but if you just like a flick about chopping off legs, etc. it might be your bag.
Could you imagine a propaganda film with brown folks being the good guys and the "Whites" being all the baddies?
We had one, but Will Smith's dumb butt turned the role down to do "Wild, Wild West".

But it's based on a historical event. Is it wrong to expect some level of accuracy in movies based on historical events?
By your logic, the birth of a nation was just entertainment despite the obvious agenda behind it, and the inaccurate interpretation of history.

Man, where do I start
First of all, do not waste 2hrs of your life watching this film
Second, if you find that you've wasted 2 hours of your life watching this white supremacist peice of crap, then i'd recommend a trip to a shrink or second best, a brain transplant.
Jesus, never have I seen such a blatantly White is Great / Black is Inferior film in my life. How many references were there to slavery, with the Spartans going on about 'we will never be enslaved...because we are warriors...rraaargghhh!!'. Is this significant considering what this year is about?
I'd quite easily forgive the white supremacy, the campness, and the lame dialog -- but what about that f**king annoying narrator! Its like shut the f-ck up and let the film flow, already!
But the damage is done, 2hrs of my life I'll never get back....
..... now, where's that brain transplant center.

Thought the film was a fun 2 hours
If you wanna see propoganda you can see it. Think it is a little bit of a stretch myself but different strokes....
The Persian king was the gayest charcter I have ever seen. Anywhere! He'd make Graham Norton look tough. If the persians had issues with the representation then that is understandable but can you ever make a war film without upsetting somebody
I'm sure the Greeks weerent happy with Leonidas being Scottish and the total absence of any greek people whatsover in the ar,y. At least with Mel Gison he would get Greek/Meditarreanian(spelling)
I was disappoited with the immortals. They had the beast in chains and once they released him I expected him to take out at least 5 of the 300. He didnt take out one. big intro and nothing happened. Much like the England squad

One of the most stupid and offensive films I have seen.
A black man is the first to die in the film (wots new)
All the spartans are white pretty boys with 6pacs
Notice how the persians are a mix or blacks, arabs and monsters. Literally Monsters. "all the armies of Asia". Wot the f**k are they trying to say?
And in the film, the persians were tactically inferior. U dont need to be Hannibal to defeat 300 men with an army of 1million. Just keep attacking until they are too tired. For f**k sake they are camped in one spot for the whole film, they have to eat/sleep? Its like in them stupid action films where the henchmen attack the hero one by one instead of all at once.
And historically the persians were more civilised than the spartans, who were complete savages.
This film was pure psycological warfare. Down with Babylon.

I mean, here's me who likes nothing better than swords and warriors slashing each other for two hours with some yelling and blood splashing thrown in. On paper that sounds like a film I couldn't possibly fault but seriously...

The Persian army looked like a mixup of fags, dykes, N****rs, ay-rabs, and straight out monsters. I'm talking monsters out of a Clive Barker movie. You watch this Persian army in this movie and you're expecting Pinhead and the nightbreed to show up.
Contrast with the strictly hetero Spartans (LOL what history are we dealing with here?) with pretty wives and nice sunny towns and glowing fields, defending democracy and freedom (huh?). A militaristic slave owning monarchy defending "freedom"? *sigh*
The whole thing stunk like a neo-con nazi wank fest...
Not recommended!
As for being able to seperate history from entertainment, this movie stunk like a cowboy film with robots (WildWildWest) or a world war two movie with laser ray guns and spaceship. Seriously... MONSTERS? WTF!!
