LA PROTESTERS TARGET EDDIE MURPHY:
They say his new movie, 'Norbit,' disrespects black women.
(February 2, 2007)
*Uh oh, now Eddie Murphy has gone and got the attention of activist Najee Ali and LA black community leaders.
They're calling for Murphy to "apologize to the African American Community for the offensive billboard and promotional campaign for his new movie 'Norbit' that demeans African American women."
The group plans a protest/press conference today at Noon.
It's not known if the offended will be satisfied with just an apology for the "offensive billboard" or if they really want the campaign itself to stop. (Well, we know that won't happen.)
In any event, the protesters outlined the specific reasons for their action:
"Eddie Murphy's billboard disrespects Black women and continues to perpetuate negative stereotypical images that large Black women are sexually aggressive, unattractive, violent and promiscuous. These types of negative images are damaging to our community and to have this ad campaign unveiled during Black History Month is a slap in our face and disrespectful"
The press release sent to EUR stated that Rev K.W.Tulloss (Making a Difference Foundation) and Melvin Snell (LA Humanity Foundation) were the sponsors of the protest/press conference. The location is the Leimert Park Water Fountain (Crenshaw & Vernon) 3415 W. 43RD Place Los Angeles CA 90018

Eddie is a genius performer, but that man REALLY hates hates his black self. He has been dogging black women from the get go..I can remember the flak he got for Coming To America, in which the half white woman was the decent wifeable one, and the black girl was the total slut.
Way to go Eddie.

Comedy and making folks laugh is the name of the game and it always has been end of.
But if we really want to get picky lets take a look at MTV I am sure you will see many more negative images of black women there

Just judging from the picture of Eddie dressed up tells me that he should know better than to caricture an older generation black woman as some bimbo slut. Man comedy has to be at least based on reality..not stereotypes surely.. why prostitute your people for some cheap laughs.
The picture reminds of the Lilt advert here in the UK which has two elderly Caribbean women prancing about like idiots. These things have no grounding in reality except for how they want to portray us.

I have not seen the film and don't plan too, as it looks incredibly coonish and asinine.
I'm sure this IMDB review pretty much sums it up:

Any points that Eddie Murphy might have gained from his performance in Dreamgirls was surely negated, and even trumped by this vile concoction of distasteful images and vulgarly offensive "comedy" that is Norbit. There's not much else to be said about the film.
I would expect this type of buffoonery from the Wayans brothers (it was no shock that Marlon was a character in this). And Katt Williams has made his whole career as a comedian from playing on a racial stereotype and performing self hating and degrading comedy. But I figured Eddie Murphy for much more class than this.
My sister has pointed out to me on a number of occasions that Eddie Murphy has a dark skin complexion complex. She has noticed his choices of leading women, and even his tendency to make darker skinned women the "bad guy" in his films while lighter skinned women are the desirable women of the main character's dreams. I'd argue with her, but I was never convinced of my own stance. Today I say she's right. (And I tell you, I feel terrible for that girl who played Young Rasputia.) ... I found this film to be every bit as offensive as Soul Plane, and possibly more damaging. Soul Plane was nothing more than a 90 minute skit based on stereotypes. The people in that film didn't have a lot of choices as far as their film careers go, so they did that piece of crap. But Norbit is a film that is legitimized by the presence of a true star with choices. And though I found it to be very offensive as a black man, I thought that it was much more abusive to overweight people and to people who don't fit a certain ideal of beauty.
The film is sickening.

Normally, I have nothing about Eddie Murphy,but the post from RealReal had to think the same thing or better yet question him as a person. Long as he has been into acting , I have never seen him in an arm of a draker skinned woman, even with his groupies, they are no darker than me( I'm a honey-brown complexion), and most of the women he has play beautiful are the same way as he did with Nrobit. Thandie Newtown plays his beautiful love interest and Respucia( Eddie playing the role of her) is suppose to play the fat and unattractive wife.He is not the only one who I have notice doing that. Ever looked at Martin Lawrence?Remember when he was in Martin( I really never cared a lot of the show in the first place). Pam was always muttley in his eyes while Tisha Campbell and some women he imagined were always the babes?Even his girlfriend look model like( light with long hair).
While I have to give Eddie his props for being the genius of those characters he portrays and I respect his work, I do get why some of those women are pissed with him. When you look in Hollywood, at least 90 percent of the Black men in the entertainment business are in the arms fo women who are lighter than he is, who are almost as thin as a rail and who look like models.Maybe the women wouldn't be angry with him if he beauty in all angles of life,but he and many other of them don't. I once remembered when he told EBONY Magazine why he love Black women and why he love them, but everytime a Black woman, especially one who may be darker skinned and/or chubby, they never look like them? How do these women suppose to feel?
I understand that this is a comedy and he just want to make people laugh, but I also get what those women are saying about him. It is said that you can tell a person attitute by the company they are in. While I don't try to dis people for their preferences, Eddie and some other men must understand why some Black women feel this way. I think about Ludacris, I don't know what his preference in women are, but on thing that I like about him is that he has featured all sorts of women in his videos and portray them in a postive light. Maybe eddie out to take some lessons from him about beauty.

I think this is the reason Denzel doesn't indulge in glorifying white women (at least onscreen anyway). Lots of brothas and white women say they don't respect him for that tho.

Stop the record. Plenty of women complain about music videos, from the almost exclusive focus of light/damn near white women featured in them, to the degrading nature of much of the imagery. Young Black women at Spelman College, in Atlanta, objected to Nelly coming there to speak about bone marrow donation(when his sister was dying), BECAUSE of some of the degrading images of Black women he has had in his videos,(the credit card swipe involving a young lady's buttocks). Obviously a blockbuster movie is going to attract attention and media coverage that a music video won't.
If we're going to have a discussion, let's have one. Don't just make up sh*t, to suit your agenda folks. Not cool at all.
