'City of God' is a Brazillian film, that was realeased a couple of years ago. It recieved raving reviews, and was voted in the top 200 films of all time by Time magazine. Channel 4 put it on a couple of weeks ago. If you've seen it, what did you think?

Its very violent but apparently based on a true story of a turf war in the 70s. I really liked it. It makes you realise that Brazilian life for many Brazilians is very hard, its not all about Carnivals and Copa Cabana beach.  It showed the real disparity between fair and dark Brazilians and the mindless violence in the favellas. Some of it was hard to watch. Some of the stars had never acted before and they were very good. Apparently the lead character is based on a real photographer who is now very successful in Brazil. I like watching world cinema so I liked this film. They did very well for a film with not much budget.

I liked it at the time but I remember reading an article by an afro brazillian who wasn't so impressed and kinda made me see it differently.  I'll try to find it.

I thought it was a great film. Shows that Rio isn't all about sun, sea and sand.

It was a great film but it wasn't necessarily a film about the differences between light and dark because there were white brazilians who were mixed in all the crime in that film. Also the girl in that flim was white but had no problem with the black photographer until someone better looking came along.

My thoughts exactly. Great film but rarely are so called 'true to life films' actually true to life.

Without sensationalism then you have no film. I dont know if this is the case about Rio and i could be wrong, but i would hedge my bets against there being little boys running riot and shooting each other on a regular.

I also read an interview, in which a brother from the favela the film is based on expressed some criticism against it. He said that some people lost their jobs, as cleaners, maids and street sweepers, because employers hated the fact that they came from that 'god forsaken place'. He also said, that it showed a one sided dipiction of favela life, because although their are problems, there is also love, and a huge community sprit. If you watch the series of it, (you can find it on youtube) its a different story all together, a lot more realistic. The series was the first prodominate black cast, and when it was given to TV networks they were shocked, as black people are hardly on TV; and when they are, they're palying stereotypical chracters, or have small/minor roles.

The guy was from a famous brazillian hip hop group called racionais Mc. Their lyrics are brilliant! racially, socially and politically conscious.

See I no some Brazilian peeps through martial arts. They say it is like that, and that kids do walk about with guns.

Ross kemp done a show on gangs, and he showed that the situation in Rio is like a war. More children died in one year in one favela in Rio that in 10 years of the Palestinian infitada. Kind of puts things in perspective. Most of the people die before they are 25. Its not like they have much of a choice is it. You have the biggest 'gang' the police murdering people regularly. Its not like here. These people thug cause they have to, not cause its cool

Also as you probably know, the brazilian police force used to execute large numbers of street children as they were viewed as 'scum' - that was in the film favela rising you are talking about.

BTW City of Men can be bought in HMV or any british DVD retailer. Its even better thatn the film

City of Men is a brilliant series. I can't compare the two because they're different, but for the most part it's enjoyable to watch. I don't know why they gave the series an 18 rating though.

My 7 year old son like City of Men, he reads the subtitles too. I edit out the sex scenes. Until I take him to Brazil, JA and Guyana, he wont know how different life is in different parts of the world. Now he sees the difference in the Bronx, Toronto and Fairfax. In another couple of years Im going to really open his eyes.

Have you seen the prisions they put them in!? Out of order what they're doing out there. You're wrong about the kids Le Moore, a man will change his morals to get by when need be. .lol. My cousin theo would show some people a few things with all the stuff that, ''kid'' has been through he aint no kid anymore and hes in England let alone Brazil/JA/South Africa.

Seen some shocking videos, one where they dragged this kid out of a police car, could see the look of fear in his eyes as the feds tried to push the camera away... the yout' pissed himself and they took him round the side of the fed car. All you hear is straight... ''Blookum!... Blookum!''. Got me vex trust, bring tears to your eyes type of 'ish. Not to mention Venesuala and the US government tactics out there, posted that video a while back, one woman was in the camera one second chanting down babylon... subtitles read she dead the next day. Those people are educated enough to see the corruption, proper pass around leaflets about whats going on to keep people up to scratch we're just straight ignorant out here and divided with it. Pathetic when you take your head out the clouds and see what we are indirectly doing with our tax money and lack of awareness.

City of Men is what they call a desenitiser. Got the DVD, completely shatters the characters. Unless you guys are watching a diffrent version from me or something.

Favela Rising is the real sequel to City Of God, I've got it but haven't had the time to watch it. Was highly reccomeded though.

City of God is definately one of my favorite films. Brazil always reminds me of South Africa, kinda parallels.

Violent, but excellent film.  I know there are a lot more black films out there  (not always violent) which are great quality and I wish I had time to watch them.  I do like this film, saddest part is when Benny's older brother dies trying to get into the car, and when Benny himself dies -that's when everything falls apart.  I also liked seeing the real life footage of Knockout Ned (on the dvd).  Also if you have the DVD you learn a lot about the favellas and how they really are the modern day Robin Hoods

Saw the film and bought it and going to buy the follow up when I remember. Read a bit about Brazil and the treatment of African-Brazillians and knew a couple of radical brothers and sisters from there via African Liberation Day in the UK. The film tells me what hey have in different ways. I am sure there is more to life there as the Watcher said same way in Kingston Jamaica, where there is a tight and strong and vibrant community, don't mean you won't lose you life faster than you can fart.

One of my close bredrins was in Brazil four weeks ago and he did not see the film or follow events there closely, but was warned by some member of staff at his hotel to mind where he went, because those youths from those poor areas don't mess and will kill on sight. My bredrin kinda brushed it off because he has travelled the world and in dangerous places.

Told me it was the first time in his life he really felt anxious and he aint no weakling when he was approached on several occassions by large groups of what he described as babies not even pickney...Just checking him out but with clear menace and intentions. Said it freaked him because they were babies..and he will never go back there again...

The treatment of Africans and the poor in Brazil is evil nothing more nothing less.

@Fred b. I have also heard from people that the age of the gun'men' is surprising.  A couple of friends went to the carnival and although it was pretty, they were constantly on edge as some of these kids would be just hanging around and they knew some of them were armed. Its out of control there. Apparenty the police have death squads which go around the favellas at night shooting shildren dead on site like rats. Its no wonder that the kids are so violent when they literally could be shot dead by the cops the next day for the crime of just living on the streets and being a potential criminal.

Trust me, Brazil don't ramp when it comes to the violence stakes. Unlike the American ghettoes, they can't even tell you what the real murder rate is in Brazil because so many people disappear who don't have any national insurance number or nothing. Far worse than even Kingston. The criminals basically run their communities and the police don't even think about getting involved because the gangs would just outgun them and murder innocent civilians in the process. In fact the gangs have so much control (and this is crazy!!!) that they've even forced cable companies outside the favelas to provide free full cable tv to all the residents and if anyone gets cut off then the gangs will basically blaze out the companies.....and the companies have no choice!! Imagine a British gang threatening Sky TV or Telewest/NTL like that!!

To most people living in the west, that final scene with The Runts in City of God may seem exaggerated, but in fact the film actually played down how violent Rio was back in the 70s. The real life Runts grew to be Commando Verhmelo who are now the biggest and most feared drugs gang in Brazil. In Brazil, weapons like an uzi is just standard! The kind of ammunition they get their hands on and patrol the streets with would shock you. Trust me we don't even know the half of what goes on there.

City of God fascinated me so much that it actually prompted me to learn and study the African community in Brazil as I didn't know too much about it before.

Babygirl444. For real and what is heart breaking is they are babies. That is the part that really shook me in the film when my boy give the baby the gun to shoot that little child. For real could not watch it. Bit like when i see that animalistic war in Sierre Leone and those places involving children. Makes me sick.

Probably one of the most disturbing things I have seen. What evil adults can do is one thing and man can harden themselves to that but a baby..

@PH bump homey because what can you say when you hear that nothing just silence....
