I don't know if this film has been spoken of previously here, apologies if that's the case. However, I just wondered if anyone saw the film on BBC1 yesternight. When I saw that it was a film about Africa, I expected it to be the usual war torn, disaster ridden affair. Nevertheless, I decided to just take a glimpse and what I saw surprised me.
It was not what I had expected at all. It was about an internationally respected African journalist who goes back to his country to foil the plotting of a weapons dealer. For once, the president of the nation was one who had the interests of his people at heart rather than the usual dictator. For once, it was a case of blacks shaping their own destiny rather than being the hapless recipients of succour from the 'merciful' West.
It was actually written by a Nigerian and starred actors from all over Africa, as well as Afro - American actors too. It was lovely seeing blacks working together in this way. The president was actually Richard - Mofe Damijo (one of Nigeria's biggest actors).
I am not sure who produced it, but it was a lovely example of what happens when blacks take an active part in depicting themselves in the media, afterall if we don't do so who will. Leaving it to others is suicidal; we have seen the results for ourselves. BBC of course seemed disgruntled at the lack of poverty, penury and suffering and labelled the film as being impractical. But their opinion as always is inconsequential.
My verdict is that it is definitely worth watching, I would like to know what anyone else who watched it happens to think.
